Offline circulation module

Any libraries using Kyle Hall's Offline Circulation utility (KOC for short -- cheeky bugger, isn't he?): http://kylehall.info/index.php/projects/koha-tools/koha-offline-circulation/ Tips? Best practices? NEKLS for example does not recommend using the utility for checking in items ("you might miss a held item to be transferred"). LibLime Enterprise Koha Q&A
by Joshua Ferraro 22 Sep '09

22 Sep '09

Hi folks, I would like to further clarify LibLime's recent announcement about the LibLime Enterprise Koha platform and its implications for the greater Koha community, as well as LibLime customers. First, we at LibLime apologize for what may have seemed like a surprise announcement. We have been working hard on creating a business model that will both ensure the success of our customers and the long-term viability of Koha. We hope that the discussion below in Q & A format will help promote better understanding about what we are doing, and that we can all move forward, wishing each other well. Q: Is LibLime Enterprise Koha a 'Fork' of Koha? A: LibLime Enterprise Koha is not a 'fork' of Koha. LibLime Enterprise Koha is a set of deployment and development procedures that allows us to provide our customers with ongoing updates to Koha on a realistic schedule. This is a change in process for LibLime, but not a change in philosophy. Prior to this change, our development process began with contribution to the Koha community, often before a set of patches was even approved by the sponsoring customer. This real-time contribution process created enormous overhead, especially given the volume of development that LibLime is involved in (which historically and currently represents an order of magnitude more than the entire rest of the community combined). Our new approach moves the contribution phase of development to the end of the cycle, which allows us and our customers adequate time to vet the functionality and to ensure that it integrates seamlessly with the public Koha repository. Q: Has LibLime withdrawn from the Koha community? A: LibLime has not withdrawn, and does not intend to withdraw, from the Koha community. LibLime has invested significant resources into Koha development and community infrastructure and will continue to do so. LibLime will publish our LibLime Enterprise Koha enhancements. The integration process with the main Koha code repository will be a seamless one. We currently support dozens of libraries running on official Koha versions on their own servers and it is critical to their success that they benefit from the LibLime customer-sponsored contributions. Q: Is LibLime Enterprise Koha truly open source both in the letter and spirit of the movement? A: Our announcements are clear on this issue. From the press release "Just to make one thing crystal clear: All of LibLime's development efforts will be available to the library community under an open-source license," ... "These are process changes, not philosophical changes. As the leader in open-source solutions for libraries, LibLime is 100% committed to the open-source movement." Q: Why has LibLime chosen to deploy LibLime Enterprise Koha as a Software as a Service offering only? A: Our new cloud-computing platform makes the process of developing, upgrading and maintaining Koha a seamless and fully-automated process. We have not yet developed the mechanism for managing remote Koha installations outside of our platform. The requirements for keeping these off-platform installations in sync with the rest of our install base is not feasible. We are 100% committed to continuing to upgrade our Appliance customers(non-hosted) and to keep them in step with the latest community-released versions of Koha. Thanks for your understanding. Questions on upgrading from Koha 3.0.1 to 3.0.2/3
by Bibliotecario Casa Balthasar 22 Sep '09

22 Sep '09

Hi everyone, Right now we're running 3.00.01 but we'd like to upgrade to 3.00.03. My first question is, I hope, relatively simple: Can we upgrade directly to 3.00.03 from 3.00.01, or would it be better/more prudent to pass for 3.00.02 first? The second question is, given that we've modified some files (for example, in /usr/share/koha/intranet/htdocs/intranet-tmpl/prog/en/modules/cataloguing/value_builder, we've modified the plugins for the leader and 008 so that it's possible to use, e.g. |-No attempt to code per Festchrift), what's the best way to handle the upgrade? Is it possible to make changes to files from the upgrade tarball before the make upgrade or is it necessary to go ahead with the upgrade and then follow-up afterwards readding the changes we've made? Thanks in advance for any and all help, it's much appreciated. Patrick Redmon Librarian Casa Balthasar

Re: [Koha] Authorities help
by kdr＠ckls.org 22 Sep '09

Authorities are used to standardize the way information is displayed, especially in relation to authors, subjects, series titles, etc. This is not a Koha innovation, it is one of the standards of library cataloging. An online version of the most widely used source in the U.S. can be found at http://authorities.loc.gov/ The Koha set up is somewhat clunky, but is at least a beginning in trying to make things standardized. The first improvement I would suggest is the ability to import LC authority headings into Koha... Kathy Kathleen D. I cant find a explanation for them, I am trying to edit the 100 $a field, i figured out how to add authorities, do a search for that authority to stick it in the 100$a field, but whats the point? I could just turn them off, would it have a great affect on things? Thanks. How to search by Language on OPAC?
by Melisa Canales 22 Sep '09

22 Sep '09

Hello, On the OPAC Advanced Search page one of the search options on the drop down list is "Language." Our collection contains a lot of foreign language films and it was my understanding we could use this field to search for all films in a particular language. Does anyone know the MARC tag that links to this search field? I've tried different ones, but have been unable to find the right one. Or maybe my understanding of the search field is incorrect... Thank you, Melisa Canales

Survey Reminder
by Nicole Engard 22 Sep '09

22 Sep '09

Hi all, Just a Monday morning (here where I am) reminder to fill out the survey for your foundation options: http://wiki.koha.org/doku.php?id=vote_in_prelim_survey This is just a preliminary survey - we will do a final survey after everyone has time to research, but this way we can see where everyone stands. Also - please note that so far there are 16 results on the survey that were not completed - meaning names weren't entered - these will not be counted!! Please remember to fill in all required fields - including your real name and organization so that we can avoid any mis-use of the survey. I am also tracking your IP address - so that is an extra level of security per the requests during the IRC meeting. Thanks Nicole C. Engard Koha Doc Manager PS. Feel free to share on any and all other lists/blogs/social networks.

Man, will I *ever* get used to the "do not reply to list" thing? This was supposed to be public. Actually, I think this enhancement request might already be there: http://bugs.koha.org/cgi-bin/bugzilla3/show_bug.cgi?id=2060 I'm *definitely* in favor of this. Items not added when importing MARC
by Amy Schuler 21 Sep '09

21 Sep '09

Hello, I was wondering if anyone could explain the lack of items situation that occurs when I import MARC records using the web interface (MARC import staging, followed by MARC import managing). I have imported the records and the bib records are fine except that as far as I can tell, I have to go through each bib record individually and add an item to that record. This is not possible for every single MARC record (in the end there will be around 10,000). When preparing records for import using the web interface, one of the parameters is "Check for embedded item record data?" where I marked "YES" and then set the drop down menu to "always add items". So, why aren't items added? My MARC structure is fine, I thought I correctly finagled the 952 subfields, with full call numbers in the 952 $o, etc. I am running Koha v.3.0 Please let me know if you have any advice. Obviously I am still trying to use the web interface, rather than bulkmarcimport.pl command utility. This is because there is documentation for the web interface tools but not for the command utility... Thanks! Amy C. Koha database documentation
by Sheldon T. 21 Sep '09

21 Sep '09

Hi All, I'm from the University of Guyana, and I'm trying to do a documentation for our library staff. This documentation is basically an illustration of the tables that are affected when data is entered into Koha. These data can be adding a new patron, deleting patrons, entering Bibliographic information, adding items to the a record and so on. The problem is that I cannot find the table(s) that is affected when a new framework is created. Can anyone tell me which table(s) is affected when a new framework is added to Koha. Thank you for your help in advance.
