Want to participate in *another* global project?
by Bavousett, David 16 Sep '09

16 Sep '09

Friends and colleagues, It's looking promising that I'll be speaking in a few weeks, to a group of library science students, about Koha. One of the things I'd like to push hard on in the presentation is that we are a truly global community. I have learned, participating in this project, that "global community" is not an abstraction-it's real people, with real faces and voices! To help them learn the same thing, I'd like to show them some of *your* faces! If you'd like to be a part, send a short greeting to me for inclusion, not later than the end of this month. It could be video, or audio-and-a-picture, or even picture-and-text-whatever you've time for, and are comfortable with! Tell who you are, where you are, and who you work for, and any greeting you'd like to pass to someone who's seeing our community for the very first time. Be brief-30 seconds or a minute, tops! If you speak English non-natively, speaking your native language is fine, too! (a translation would be nice.) Production quality doesn't need to be perfect, just do the best you can with whatever tools you have, and send it along to me (directly, please, rather than the list). I'll wrap up the contributions into a short video for use in the presentation, and afterwards, I'll creative-commons it, for anyone to use. My editing criteria: if you go too long, I might trim where I have to, but I'll let you know. If a whole *bunch* of people from one country contribute, not all of them will make it in, probably-so don't take it personally. Un-nice commentary will be quashed mercilessly. Thanks in advance to all of you who choose to participate! J. David Bavousett (who's doing this on his own, but is also...) Library Systems Analyst | P | T | F | S |

LDAP auth and Active Directory

Hi all, Earlier this month Anselm Olweny wrote: ====== I have installed koha in my institution library and would like patrons to login at the opac using their active directory accounts. I have followed the instructions in the Auth_with_ldap.pm file and made the necessary changes in the koha-conf.xml file. There are also no errors in both apache and koha error logs. I am kindly requesting for any assistance in making this work. I would appreciate help relating to what changes I may need to do in active directory as well or Auth_with_ldap.pm. I have attached a copy of my koha-conf.xml so that you may show me what am getting wrong. ====== I have exactly the same problem: incorrect username, password. I haven't modified auth_with_ldap.pm . Hello all
by Bibliotecario Casa Balthasar 16 Sep '09

Hello everyone, I'm a new subscriber to the list and just wanted to introduce myself before asking for help (I sort of doubt that I'll be able to offer much, but who knows). My names is Patrick Redmon and I'm working as a librarian in a small, specialized library (circa 10,000 volumes) for the work Hans Urs von Balthasar, Henri de Lubac, Adrienne von Speyr, and Joseph Ratzinger. The library is in Rome, Italy, and is open to researchers and students. After years of having a home-brewed catalogue in a program called File Maker Pro, and after about a year of work, we recently (for the most part) finished a migration to Koha 3 running on a Debian. For the moment our catalogue is only available on our internal network, but we're interested in the possibility of making it available on the internet. Thanks in advance to all, and have a good day. Best Regards, Patrick Redmon Librarian Casa Balthasar

Salvete! Welcome to the community :D >I'm a new subscriber to the list and just wanted to introduce myself before asking for help (I sort of doubt that I'll be able to offer much, but who knows). > You'd be surprised. These things tend to bite you and burrow deep so that eventually you're giving back. My names is Patrick Redmon and I'm working as a >librarian in a small, specialized library (circa 10,000 volumes) for the work Hans Urs von Balthasar, Henri That's about the size of my old collection, and it's no small task to automate, even if it's smaller than a large academic Library. >de Lubac, Adrienne von Speyr, and Joseph Ratzinger. I bet that this will work much better for you than File Maker Pro ;) Cheers, Brooke

Re: [Koha] MARC Import

Hi Wolfgang It is quite easy to convert data when exporting from CDS/ISIS. You need to write a Field Selection Table saying where you want data moved from and to. Please see the CDS/ISIS for Windows Handbook, section 10.7. However, you won’t easily be able to produce details that are not there in your ISIS database (e.g. indicators and the 008 field). Andrew Buxton IDS, Brighton, UK From: koha-bounces(a)lists.katipo.co.nz [mailto:koha-bounces@lists.katipo.co.nz] On Behalf Of Wolfgang Koller Sent: 16 September 2009 06:56 To: Koha(a)lists.katipo.co.nz Subject: [Koha] MARC Import Hi all! We are currently looking into importing our ISIS dataset into koha. However, the ISIS database was designed using non-standard conventions fo the MARC21 fields, so we need a „conversion“ first. I found out that Koha supports exporting the data into custom MARC formats, ist this also supported for importing (so e.g. can I create a definition of my format and import then directly into Koha)? Wolfgang, Andrew Buxton recently wrote about this on the list: "Regarding 3, I don't yet know Koha well enough to say what editing is possible there. But when exporting from Winisis you can use a Field Select Table to move data from one field (or subfield) to another. For example, to move the contents of field 100 to 700 you would have a line: 700 0 (v100/) (The brackets and slash will take care of the fact that v100 is a repeatable field.) Modification during exporting is covered in the CDS/ISIS for Windows Handbook, section 10.7. There is also the very useful "Swiss Knife" tool for Winisis that allows you to do some clever editing of the Winisis database before exporting. " Otherwise I have used the free MarcEdit tool which can take a CDS ISIS ISO format file and convert to flat text. From there you can either use MarcEdit or your favourite programming language to manipulate the MARC tags and use MarcEdit to reconvert back to ISO 2709 for loading into Koha. Not quite what you were asking for, but a number of valid options...
