by Nicole Engard 21 Sep '09

21 Sep '09

Hi all, I just wanted to check to see if we're supposed to be discussing our foundation forming options on the list or putting notes on the wiki? The survey is just to guage our initial opions and we're supposed to be discussing/researching between now and the next meeting. Nicole

I agree and someone on my blog gave me a tip to improve it - so I certainly will change that. ------Original Message------ From: paul POULAIN Sender: koha-bounces(a)lists.katipo.co.nz Cc: koha-devel Cc: Koha-Mailinglist Subject: Re: [Koha] Koha Foundation Surveys Sent: Sep 21, 2009 11:39 AM Nicole Engard a écrit : > I will take all comments into play when creating the final survey. > my comment: I answered, but I think the long list 15? 20? items for the goals of the Foundations is too hard to fill. I choose 5 or 6 carefully, then, my ordering means (almost) nothing. Giving a ranking (1-10 for example) would be easier to fill, and easier to compile results. -- Paul POULAIN http://www.biblibre.com Expert en Logiciels Libres pour l'info-doc Tel : (33) 4 91 81 35 08 _______________________________________________ Koha mailing list Koha(a)lists.katipo.co.nz http://lists.katipo.co.nz/mailman/listinfo/koha Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry

Koha Foundation Surveys
by Nicole Engard 21 Sep '09

21 Sep '09

Hello all, I am sorry for the delay, I was out of town the past few days. Per our meeting on IRC earlier this week (http://wiki.koha.org/doku.php?id=meetingnotes09sep15) I have put together a survey with some foundation forming questions. English: http://opensource.web2learning.net/limesurvey/index.php?sid=68645&lang=en French: http://opensource.web2learning.net/limesurvey/index.php?sid=68645&lang=fr The survey was created using the open source survey tool - LimeSurvey - and so it requires that you have JS enabled. If you don't - you can use one of these PDF versions to view the questions and just email your answers. English: http://opensource.web2learning.net/Koha-English.pdf French: http://opensource.web2learning.net/Koha-French.pdf The reason I chose this survey tool was because it would allow for multiple languages, and it allows for some powerful analytics that I can then share with everyone - most obviously it's open source :) Also - you will see that when ranking options you have to rank all options - so just put the options you don't care about towards the end of your ranking. This survey will be active for 2 weeks and then I will put up the final survey - that gives us two weeks to do our research. This survey is open to any and all members of the Koha community - which means anyone with an interest in the future of Koha - whether they are using the software or active in development or not. Please feel free to forward these links on and share with others. Thanks Nicole C. Engard Koha Documentation Manager

MARC Data Import Question
by Zachary Tucker 21 Sep '09

21 Sep '09

Hello all! This is my first post to the Koha list, and I am glad to see there is such an active community around the product. I've only used it for a few days, but I am already very happy with my decision to use Koha over Evergreen, OpenBiblio, etc. My question pertains to importing existing book records. I have a listing of all our records in a CSV file... which contains info such as title, author, etc. The file is attached for reference. In an attempt to import that data, I converted that CSV information to MARC records. the converted file is attached for reference also. But, when I try to import the MARC file, I get an error that the staging was not completed because there are MARC errors. So, I suppose my question has a lot mini questions... did I go about importing the wrong way? Did I convert the CSV file incorrectly? Did I map the data to the wrong MARC fields? I followed the LOC's MARC guide when doing the conversion, but apparently I did something wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Zach Tucker IT Director, Nelson Memorial Library

MARC Data Import Question
by Bob Birchall ＠ Calyx 21 Sep '09

Hi Zachary, Your data appear to be missing important fields that Koha will need: home branch, holding branch and barcode. (These are stored at marc field 952 in Koha). I assume that your 'format' flag is equivalent to Koha's 'item type'? Did you convert your file to marc using a marc-creating tool such as MarcEdit ? http://people.oregonstate.edu/~reeset/marcedit/html/index.php Did you import the file to Koha using bulkmarcimport.pl from the command line? This will serve you better for your task than 'Stage Marc Records' in the web interface. Hope that helps, Bob Birchall Calyx > > My question pertains to importing existing book records. Fixed asset management??
by Lenora Oftedahl 20 Sep '09

20 Sep '09

Hi. Recently the Commission realized (after an audit finding) that they need better fixed asset management. They would like to be able to check these items out to people to track them. I mentioned that function sounds like a library and perhaps they could use Koha for this function. The Finance Dept. would have a separate installation on a different server, but I don't see why they couldn't use the software. What do you all think? Is there anyone out there using Koha for capital item management beyond books? Do you have artwork or cell phones described and checked out to staff? Thanx. Lenora Lenora A. Extended Patron attributes
by Roche III, Edward 18 Sep '09

18 Sep '09

Can you have more than one extended attribute for a patron? I imported one on Weds and it worked fine, so I did another this morning it completed with no issue but when I select one of the patrons in Koha to view the data it only shows the last imported attribute and if you select edit to fix the first imported attribute there is no data list just the attribute fields. If I save the blanks it deletes the data. I did look at the borrowers attribute table and all the attributes that were imported the first time where deleted???? I guess you need to do all of them at one time? Why is that? Thanks Ed Edward J. Re: [Koha] Authorities help
by Ben Ide 18 Sep '09

18 Sep '09

Hi! I'm Ben. Long time lurker, first time malcontent. I mean poster. ;-) We use authority records rather extensively here. The best example that I can use to explain why would be "Mark Twain." Samuel Longhorn Clemens chose the name Mark Twain as a writing pseudonym, but his pen name became so widely recognized that nearly everyone refers to him that way. Having an authority record would allow you to redirect people looking for "Samuel Longhorn Clemens" to the recognized name "Mark Twain." ...or "Sam Clemens," or "Marc Twain," or one of the other pen names that he used. It gets more useful for people like Tchaikovsky, who has multiple recognized alternate spellings of his name. We also use it to pull together iterations of musical works, which can get more byzantine. (How many "symphony no.3" titles are there?) Hope this helps. -- Ben On Thu, Sep 17, 2009 at 12:05 PM, scott <scott(a)sedc.k12.ut.us> wrote: > What are the authorities for?
