Fwd: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Evergreen foundation (again)
by vtl＠scls.lib.wi.us 24 Sep '09

For those of you who are interested in establishing a Koha foundation, this may be of interest. The Evergreen folks are trying to do the same. Perhaps we can learn from each other in true open source fashion. Vicki ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Hyman, Ben EDUC:EX <Ben.Hyman(a)gov.bc.ca> Date: Thu, Sep 17, 2009 at 10:09 PM Subject: Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Evergreen foundation (again) To: open-ils-general(a)list.georgialibraries.org I concur entirely with Dan (thanks for reviving this discussion Dan), and would love to see the community celebrating the creation of just such a Foundation at the conference in Grand Rapids. Perhaps that's being unrealistic, but sooner is better, IMHO. I suppose Foundation establishment should precede celebration...perhaps an exploratory work group could be nominated by the community? I posted a response to George's blog post [2] about the difficulties that the Koha community has undergone recently and their renewed effort to establish a foundation, but in that context I would like to revive the discussion about an Evergreen Software Foundation by suggesting that if such an entity is formed, it should roughly have the following responsibilities: * Hold the trademarks, logos, and evergreen-ils.org/open-ils.org related collateral in trust for the use of the community * Extend the community's development capacity (for example, by funding the creation of developer training tutorials and workshops, where development should be defined broadly to include documentation, usability, design, testing, etc) * Coordinate joint funding for the development of new features * Organize the Evergreen International Conferences Further, I suggest that we would be foolish to turn down the Software Freedom Conservancy's [3] offer to serve, for free, as the 501(c)(3) [4] shell organization that would be able to hold the collateral and financial assets in trust for the foundation, and would accept donations to the foundation and maintain corporate records and file the tax return (again, for free). It has been stated several times that "it's not that hard to file the paperwork for a 501(c)(3)", but I would argue that an advantage of the Software Freedom Conservancy is that it is a neutral entity. [4]. As a Canadian, I don't care about 501(c)(3) status because I get no tax advantages from it. -- Vicki Teal Lovely Software Applications Supervisor South Central Library System vtl(a)scls.lib.wi.us (608)261-9109

Thank you very much Bernardo. I don't have a ton of experience with mysql, so this is really a big help. And you're definitely right that the list of tags not to be hidden would be the shortest. Can't search by subjects
by Darla Grediagin 24 Sep '09

Good morning, I am running Koha 2.9 on a Linux server. I believe my problem is in the system set up. We can't search by subjects. Our subject look like they are links, but if you click on them they don't find anything. Any ideas would be appreciated. 2009/9/23 Joann Ransom <jransom(a)library.org.nz>: > Hi all, > > I like what Atz is saying here and agree. HLT and Katipo are also watching > this debate very carefully with regards to Kete which is slowly building as > a community. (kete.net.nz) I would encourage Katipo to only consider turning Kete trademarks and such over to HLT and not selling them to another vendor. This will go a long way to helping the Kete community avoid the larger part of the issue the Koha community is facing atm. > I too am worried about trying to formalize this Koha governance to much. I agree with this very healthy fear of over governance. IMHO the larger part of the momentum behind the development of Koha is *not* simply money. A large percentage of it is the love (if you will) of doing this sort of thing. Over governance will kill that in very short order. > The OS developers are like thoroughbreds and need a > really light rein! Good analogy! Thoroughbreds are dead set on doing what they do best: running fast and staying ahead of the herd. Earn their respect and learn to right them properly and they will get you where you want to go... fast... do otherwise and you may get a good kick. >I also think that it will be hard to have any teeth and > in how will it actually govern when anyone can decide to fork-off anytime > they like. Right. A license change can prevent the hiding of code. But the right to fork is inherent in the entire theme of FOSS. (And the spirit of all FOSS demands that your fork be made public...) >Goodwill and collaboration and peer pressure are the tools which > will work. These three things only function when participants have trust and character. Every participant is trusting that every other participant to fulfill their obligations: some written and (probably the greater of the two) many unwritten and understood. And good character will not permit a participant to violate the trust placed in them by other participants. >However, that isn't to say that someone relatively laid back and > neutral (HLT) shouldn't step up and take steps to secure the domain name, > trademarks etc for the greater Koha community to use and own. Keeping them > safe from misuse if you like. This is the need we must address immediately. And HLT (IMHO) has the balance needed to maintain the proper tension between the interests of every type of community participant be they developer or librarian, commercial or non-commercial. >I like the model which has worked surprisingly > well over the last decade, other than this last big hiccup, and don't really > want to throw the baby away with the bathwater. The model may need tweaking > rather than abandoning. I agree. Too dramatic of a change could be as equally destructive to the community as no change. I think that collaboration between Koha and Evergreen is possible and desirable. But the issue at hand is an issue for the Koha community alone to deal with. Other sorts of collaborative organizations will only be possible if we have resolved the fundamental matter of our own organization. post survey thoughts
by Nicole Engard 23 Sep '09

23 Sep '09

Hi all, I have filled out the survey and have some thoughts. #1 - I was asked to put 'form a foundation now' on the list of options - but I thought we had decided on the chat that this was too time consuming a process at this time and that we just wanted to find a custodian for the time being while we go through the steps of forming a foundation? #2 - Also, I copied the original list that we all gave MJ to create his poll as priorities for the foundation we form - my question is - do we want to focus on what we want the custodian org to do and then come up with another survey later when we're ready to form a group ourselves with questions of what it should do? #3 - What is an opensearch portal for Koha? :) Okay - let the discussion begin. error, line 2119
by Amy Schuler 23 Sep '09

23 Sep '09

Hello again, It seems like I am taking one step forward, two steps back with my Koha 3.0 installation... I imported a small batch of records (only 5!!) into Koha after adding populated 952 $a to each record (which I did to try to solve a lack-of-items problem) and then tried searching on them. Here is the error message I receive: "Can't call method "as_usmarc" on an undefined value at /home/koha/kohaclone/C4/Search.pm line 2119". I looked it up and see that some people in the past suggested rebuilding your index. But here is the kicker - I got this error message not only when the records were in the database, but also AFTER reversing the import! So there should not be anything left to re-index, right? Or is there? So, in trying to solve one problem, I may have caused another. Feeling frustrated (but still very thankful for any advice!), Amy Amy C. Koha for Windows install question
by Christopher Brown-Syed PhD 23 Sep '09

23 Sep '09

Greetings, I have been off this list for at least 3 years, so pardon me if this is a FAQ, or not right for this list. I need to install Koha on a Win32 platform for teaching purposes. The installer (Koha2.2.9-W32-R1.exe) works fine, until the script reaches the "unpacking MARC Charset 0.92" line, then hangs. Being no longer a "Windows person", I'm at a loss here... (The version of perl installed is ActivePerl-5.8.9.826-MSWin32-x86, and I note that MARC Charset 1.1 is what's currently available via CPAN.... ) Thanks, Chris Brown-Syed cbrownsyed(a)cogeco.ca

marcedit regular expression
by Erik Lewis 22 Sep '09

22 Sep '09

Happy rainy morning from Georgia I'm working on my full database conversion and most of it has been pretty straight forward however I have 2 nagging questions. 1) Where have those who have migrated unicorn data translated the Item Category 1 and 2 subfields from the Sirsi 999 field to the Koha 952? 2) I'm having a problem with dates Sirsi stores them in the 999 as dMM/DD/YYYY or sometimes dM/D/YYYY. The "d" is just a prefix. I can select them with my limited Regex skill but I haven't been able to figure out how to convert them to YYYY-MM-DD. I'm being pretty methodical about documenting my steps for data conversion with the hope that it will be helpful to others.
