Looking for Open Source Answers from Libraries
by Nicole Engard 25 Sep '09

25 Sep '09

Hi all, I'm working on a book about open source in libraries and want to include real life examples from libraries. If your library - or a library you know of is using any of the following I'd love to send you some questions to get some first hand info about your experience with the switch and the useage of that software. Gimp Scribus Omeka VuFind Blacklight reservesdirect libstats zotero opengoo camstudio limesurvey dimdim (or webhuddle) aptana thunderbird I have a lot of other open source apps covered already, but if you think I'm missing something just ask me and I'll tell you if I have an interview already :) Thanks a bunch, Nicole C. Engard nengard(a)gmail.com PS. As always feel free to forward to others who might be able to help.

> The second option looks much cleaner, but doesn't answer the question > I had when I viewed the first option: Who is "the library" in the > statement "Message from the library"? I suppose "the library" in this case refers to the organization of which each separate library is a branch. Should it say "Message from the libraries?" With the new messaging system each message IS labeled with the name of the library that posted it. It's only with the old messaging system that you won't see any attribution. -- Owen -- Web Developer Athens County Public Libraries http://www.myacpl.org

Patron Extended Attribute Import
by Roche III, Edward 25 Sep '09

25 Sep '09

Is it possible to import individual extended attributes as we add them? If so, what would be the proper format be in the import file for the field? I have tried "fieldname:value", ""fieldname:value"" and """fieldname:value""". I used excel to manipulate the data an add the one set of quotes and then save as CSV. When I open the file in a text editor the quotes become 3 sets instead of one. This is where I tried the different sets of quotes. If I import all the fields in the same import they show up but if I then try to import another one later it doesn't work. It says it imported fine and the original fields and values are there in the DB but the new ones are not and the strangest part is if I pull up a student through Koha and look at the patron detail page the values are there but if I go to the screen to edit that attributes they are blank. IF I save it deletes the values but if I cancel it doesn't. Any thought? Thanks Ed Edward J. Re: [Koha] Questions on upgrading from Koha 3.0.1 to 3.0.2/3
by Bibliotecario Casa Balthasar 25 Sep '09

Henri, Thank you very much for your disponibilité (which is a rather nice word in Italian and French that unhappily hardly exists any longer in English as disponibility, though one can find it in the OED). I spoke with my director today, and we're committed to getting our changes (the very few changes we've made) into Koha in the hopes of making some small contribution. I won't be able to start working on it, unfortunately, before the end of October. The extent of the changes we've made, outside of some edits for OPAC's xslt so that it displays a few fields that are of interest to us (something I immagine that isn't very interesting for everyone else), are to the plugins for the Leader and 008 for biblio and authorities (/usr/share/koha/intranet/cgi-bin/cataloguing/value_builder & 7usr/share/koha/intranet/htdocs/intranet-tmpl/prog/en/modules/cataloguing/value-builder) in order to permit various possibilities in MARC that weren't available through the plugins. Given all this, it seems to me like the 1st option you suggested is probably a bit much (at least if you don't tell me otherwise). At the same time, I've been asking myself if these few changes we've made haven't already been anticipated between 3.01 and 3.03 or even more recently; would you have any idea about this? En tout cas, je vous remercie humblement. 2009/9/24 LAURENT Henri-Damien <henridamien.laurent(a)biblibre.com> > Bibliotecario Casa Balthasar a écrit : > >> Dear Henri, >> >> No, unfortunately we haven't been using any version control system. Clarifying messages in the OPAC
by Owen Leonard 25 Sep '09

25 Sep '09

With the new messaging system contributed by PTFS, Middletown Township Public Library, and East Brunswick Public Library we get a new way to add messages to a patron's record. The new messages can be added right from the checkout screen, and the date and library are noted automatically in the message. Currently these messages are shown in a separate box from the old messages (messages added from the patron edit form): http://bugs.koha.org/cgi-bin/bugzilla3/attachment.cgi?id=1172 I'd like to merge these and show all notes in the same box, but I'm not sure what the best way to label them is. Should each kind of message be labeled differently? -- Owen -- Web Developer Athens County Public Libraries http://www.myacpl.org

Can we clear old/paid fines from borrower records?
by Agnes Rivers-Moore 25 Sep '09

25 Sep '09

Dear all We charge overdue fines by the day, which means that someone with 15 items out late, has 15 lines of say 20c each. When we pay them we get 15 more lines of 'Payment - thanks'. It doesn't take long before the balance is off the bottom of the screen, and it becomes difficult to see which amounts are still outstanding. Is there a way to clear or compress old fines, as there is to clear circulation history from borrower records? I would like a way to move the paid amounts to a separate screen (fine log), and keep only unpaid amounts in the screen you see when paying. We are on Koha 3.00.00.107. Thanks, Agnes -- Agnes Rivers-Moore Assistant Librarian Hanover Public Library

Can marc tags be hidden
by Sheldon T. 24 Sep '09

24 Sep '09

Hi All, I'm from the University of Guyana, and I'm trying to customize koha ILS for our library staff. I've noticed that there are a lot of marc tags (and some of them aren't relevant to our collection of books) and can cause mistakes when adding records to the database. I know that the marc tags can be deleted; I don't want them deleted. My question is: can the marc tags be hidden (not deleted) in the framework, so that it wouldn't over whelm the staffs when they are adding records to Koha. Thank for all your help in advance=^D.
