Clarifying messages in the OPAC
With the new messaging system contributed by PTFS, Middletown Township Public Library, and East Brunswick Public Library we get a new way to add messages to a patron's record. The new messages can be added right from the checkout screen, and the date and library are noted automatically in the message. Currently these messages are shown in a separate box from the old messages (messages added from the patron edit form): http://bugs.koha.org/cgi-bin/bugzilla3/attachment.cgi?id=1172 I'd like to merge these and show all notes in the same box, but I'm not sure what the best way to label them is. Should each kind of message be labeled differently? -- Owen -- Web Developer Athens County Public Libraries http://www.myacpl.org
I think combining the two is a great idea -- no real preference on what the header should be. Whatever seems to make sense. The "Message from the library" header already exists and thus (I assume) has translations in place, if that makes any difference. Jane Wagner Library Systems Analyst PTFS Inc. I like this too - but we need to make it clear that some of the messages are temporary and others are more long term - the temp circ messages have [delete] links next to them whereas the permanent messages don't. Nicole On Fri, Sep 25, 2009 at 10:51 AM, Wagner, Jane <jwagner@ptfs.com> wrote:

Right, so how do you express that difference to the public in the notes they see when they log in to the OPAC? I'm not sure the issue of permanence is relevant from the patron's point of view. They can't dismiss or delete the messages themselves. Is it important to distinguish the two types of messages to the patron? -- Owen -- Web Developer Athens County Public Libraries http://www.myacpl.org
Here's one possibility: http://bugs.koha.org/cgi-bin/bugzilla3/attachment.cgi?id=1174 -- Owen
Yes, on the IRC we were discussing the difference between the new messaging feature and the old circ and opac notes. It's a question of permanence: There's notes you don't ever want to overwrite, like "child has parent's permission for X". So the new feature and the circ notes are both needed, but I don't know if anyone has an equivalent need for "permanent" OPAC notes. Does anyone need to preserve anything in the old OPAC notes fields in the same manner? If not, Owen was suggesting that we might be able to do away with that field altogether. We would still need the circ notes field for the "permanent" notes. Jane Wagner Library Systems Analyst PTFS Inc.
