Cusat library adopts free software
by Vimal Kumar 26 Nov '09

KOCHI: Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) library is taking the free software route thanks to ‘Koha’, an integrated library system being extensively used in libraries across the country and abroad. The engineering library of the university has been fully computerised using this free software. Surendran Cherukodan, Junior Librarian at the School of Engineering, Cusat, said that ‘Koha’ has many advantages and can be downloaded from the Internet free of cost. Highlights Some of the highlights of the free software include simple, clear interface for librarians and members, customisable search, circulation and borrower management, full acquisitions system including budgets and pricing information, simple acquisitions system for the smaller library, and ability to cope with any number of branches, patrons, patron categories, item categories, items, currencies and other data. Mr. Cherukodan said that around 30,000 books owned by the School of Engineering library can be searched through the ‘Koha’ online catalogue. The library catalogue is available on http://soelibrary.cusat.ac.in. The software will also update on the books available with the users and its date of return. Digital library The university has also set up a digital library by using ‘D Space’, another free software. Over 2,300 documents have been collected for the benefit of students and faculty members using this facility. Some of the documents available in the digital library include research papers of faculty members, seminar and project reports, syllabus of courses and contents of various journals. The digital library also has nearly 1,500 previous question papers for the benefit of students. Cusat digital library will be available on http://dpsace.cusat.ac.in/dspace. Excerpts from ed c's message of Tue Nov 24 10:59:41 +1300 2009: > > I'd prefer the November date. One thing to keep in mind for the USA folks, it > either has the problem, or advantage, of being the same week as their > Thanksgiving (November 25 in 2010). That said, I'm not sure what holidays may > be in effect for the rest of the world, so that may easily be canceled out by > some other holiday for some other country that takes place in October. > > The reason why I prefer the November date is October is already stacked full of > conferences (both in North America and Europe anyway). Also, while the flights > might be slightly more in November, if I'm going to fly all that way (and most > likely have to spend my own money), I'd rather go in November when it is closer > to the New Zealand summer (which Air New Zealand claims to be December - > February). > November runs you into summer holidays for NZ universities and high schools. The prices of flights will be significantly more expensive, as will the price of accommodation and internal travel. I live here, so that doesn't affect me at all, but definitely something to bear in mind for any people coming from overseas. Also the 28th of November is the NZ National Library conference in Dunedin, so those dates would rule out any of the NZ Koha libraries who wanted to stay for the workshops section. I think I'm pretty much talking myself into the October dates I'm afraid Ed. Chris -- Chris Cormack Catalyst IT Ltd. +64 4 803 2238 PO Box 11-053, Manners St, Wellington 6142, New Zealand

Reasonable membership dues, for either individuals or libraries, are supported here at our library, and I'm sure my director would give it positive consideration. I have my ALA membership paperwork tacked to the board in front of me, and I see we're paying $106 yearly for ALA ($40) + LITA ($60) for me, and I've only ever been to one LITA conference. I suspect some many tech people aren't high enough in the food chain to make it to ALA conferences. Just some of my random pre-2 Dec comments. The same comment also holds true for whatever organization might come from the nascent "Koha-HLT" effort. Greg Lawson Rolling Hills Consolidated Library 1912 N. Kohacon10 dates, straw poll
by Chris Cormack 24 Nov '09

24 Nov '09

Hi All As you mostly all know, I am busy sorting out venues and dates for Kohacon 2010. I have managed to get the use of a really nice venue, located in the middle of the CBD, close to restaurants and hotels. And at a really good price. So with some sponsorship will be able to keep the conference price free. The dates it is available are the week of the 25th of October 2010, and then again start the 22nd of November. I am aware the second set of dates runs into Thanksgiving, for all the US Koha users, so I think (correct me if I am wrong) that the October dates are preferable. So out of those 2 sets of dates, 25,26,27 October conference proper, 28,29,30,1 Hands on workshop/hackfest. OR 22,23,24 November conference proper, 25,26,27,28 Hands on workshop/hackfest Is preferable, (I'm definitely leaning towards october, flights and accomodation will be cheaper then also) Chris

US Koha Users Conference 2010
by vtl＠scls.lib.wi.us 24 Nov '09

24 Nov '09

This is a re-post of an email sent previously. Please submit all applications by December 15th, 2009 as we hope to get the ball moving on this soon. At the KUDOS meeting at ALA last summer there was a great deal of interest in holding a US Koha users group in spring 2010. The focus would be on Koha users coming together to help each other out. Vendor and developer participation would be more than welcome, but the meeting would be coordinated by users and most presentations would be done by users. If you are interested in hosting a US Koha users group in spring 2010, please fill out this form. If you are interested in evaluating meeting sites and/or helping out with planning the meeting, please let me know. It will take lots of people to get this done! http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?hl=en&formkey=ck92M05ITG5RVUl2VlNvT… .. We are respectful of the KohaCon that is planned for fall 2010 in New Zealand and this meeting is not meant to compete with KohaCon. In fact, many US users hope to be able to go to KohaCon in addition to or instead of a US Koha users meeting. -- Vicki Teal Lovely Helping our 52 member libraries provide the best possible service to the public.
