Oops, I didn't notice that my response didn't go to the entire list. The message I am quoting responds to a message that didn't make it to the list. Sorry about that. Remainder of reply inline. Most e-book providers (and I'm pretty sure by "most" I actually mean "all e-book providers that use DRM") provide a platform which enforces any viewing limits, leaving libraries to merely provide a link. However, if you are checking books out, it means that a person (presumably you) is involved in the process at the point of checkout. I tried adding a non-public note to an item, but the note does not show up at any point during the checkout process. It might be possible to add this. I'm not sure. I've never used Koha in a circulating library, so perhaps someone else will have an idea. data import tools

reading through the various tutorials and getting started documents is still leaving me with the impression that adding an item into a library is a very cumbersom process (manually search for a MARC record, save it, load it into koha, add an item) has anyone made a simple script that would let me feed it a list of books (by scanned ISBN codes for example) and have it do everything under the covers to get it added? I know that I've seen smaller personal library-type applications that had this sort of capibility. I have some books that I have in multiple formats (paperback, hardcover, plus several e-book formats), how can I tag these appropriately? the MARC records that I've found seem to be just for the hardcover edition. I am not a trained librarian, just someone with several hundred titles in e-book version and a few thousand paper books looking to get some sort of sanity around things. I've gone through all the user guides and tutorials listed on the koha-community site, is there another place I should look for info and guidence to setup a small library like mine? David Lang

suggested improvements
by david＠lang.hm 19 Dec '10

I've finally gotten around to setting up koha and ran into a few headaches that I would like to suggest improvements for. first off, I ran into problems with the install as I opted to make the database named kohadefault instead of koha, but the install process didn't properly create the database, and still attempted to access the database koha. I manually went in to mysql and ran the kohastructure.sql file manually. Secondly, it would be nice if there was some straightforward way to have koha run without taking over the webserver it's running on (I already have quite a few other things running, and would rather setup koha at lang.hm/koha rather than having to setup a new site for it) Third, I loaded the default data and need to do a bunch of removing of things, it would be very nice if it was possible to check multiple items and hit delete (and confirmation) once, rather than having to delete and confirm for each item (with the delay to re-draw the multiple screens in the process. newbie needs help importing records
by Shelley & Kurt Kemperman 18 Dec '10

We have just downloaded and installed koha for use in our small Catholic school library. We have no current computer records for our books (about 4000 items). I am not a techie or a librarian, but am trying to get this set up. I could really use some help in how to start importing MARC records via a z39.50 server. I am lost in all of the manual directions about MARC identifier fields, etc. In my perfect world, I would like to take a book off of the shelf, search by title in the Library of Congress or other database, import the MARC record, stick a bar code sticker in the book and scan it. Can anyone help me access some basic directions for this or get me started? Thanks so much Shelley

Some problems or questions
by Vitor Fernandes 18 Dec '10

Hi there. I was testing my Koha server when some problems ocurred. - When a patron has 6 in 6 checkouts possibles and the staff tries to checkout another item to the patron there is a prompt to say that the patron has already 6 checkouts. In that prompt the staff can checkout the item. There is some option to block the staff to checkout anymore items to that patron? - When a patron has a item checkout, and the staff tries to checkout the same item to another user, there is again a prompt where the staff can checkout the item to the other user. Again there is some Koha option to turn off that funcionalitie? - I've set up the circulation matrix and the circulation rules are working almost fine. The only problem is that the patron can place holds in more items than the holds allowed count. For example a patron with 6 holds allowed can placed holds in more than 6 items. How I can resolve it? Maybe some Koha option is missing me... Regards. Vitor Fernandes.

In other environments that I work in, the boolean operator AND has to be ALL CAPS. I have not looked at the code, but from the zebra manual there might be some possibility of mapping the command line (PQF?) " @and " to an allcaps AND, exclusive of lower|mixed case and|And.
