The caveat is that sometimes fields are unnecessarily repeated where a cataloguer has accidentally cut and pasted too often. This has always seemed like the sort of brute force operation that a computer could perform with relative ease and a person could lend an eye to later, much like the authorities deduplication feature that eXC has worked out. Two better would include ranking. Both relevancy ranking and optional community feedback that ranked by Library. For instance, it was very easy for me to tell staff to check MaineInfoNet first since that consortium had a lot of very high quality records that were of local interest, so there was high recall and high precision. Cheers, Brooke

We Have setup Koha and want to login with the users from our LDAP database. Our LDAP is functional and in use for samba, Moodle and Horde (Learning environment and e-mail for our school). Koha Web Installer MySQL error
by Patrick 27 Dec '08

27 Dec '08

Hi all, I'm having a bit of difficulty getting the koha web installer up and running. The error message I receive when trying to connect to it follows: Koha error The following fatal error has occurred: Can't connect to MySQL server on 'bibserv' (111) at /usr/share/perl/5.8/CGI/Carp.pm line 314. Compilation failed in require at /usr/share/koha/lib/C4/Circulation.pm line 25. BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/share/koha/lib/C4/Circulation.pm line 25. I've glanced over the files cited in the error message, but can't make head or tails of what the problem might be. One note is that I'd installed the DBD::mysql perl module with a force install instead of creating the test db. Could this have something to do with this error? I'm running Debian Etch, Koha 3.00.00, Perl 5.8.8-7etch5, and believe to have followd the INSTALL.Debian faithfully. Any help would be much appreciated. Best, Patrick

Label printing and bug 2691
by Sharon Moreland 23 Dec '08

23 Dec '08

According to a thread from a couple of weeks ago, some of you are able to use the label printing features of Koha. A question: 1. Have you run into issues related to the call number on a spine label splitting at the ANY punctuation? (Bug 2691): YA 133.42 Black printing as: YA 133 42 Black or LP F Rowling, J.K. printing as: LP F Rowling J K while sometimes Dewey prints fine, for example: 823.9 WAT or 133.43 ROL I had another question, but now I can't remember what it was. Attached is the PDF created with the wonky spine labels. Sharon Moreland NExpress Shared Catalog Northeast Kansas Library System

Koha and OAI
by Laurence Lefaucheur 23 Dec '08

23 Dec '08

Hello, translating/writing Koha 3.0 french documentation, I configured Koha as OAI repository with system preferences OAI-PMH. It seems to work quite fine, however I wonder how the sets defined in sys pref OAI-PMH:Set are used : - I didn't see the correspondence between Set and any field of biblio, or document types. - I didn't find in oai.pl a query where Sets are involved, - and the xml response to oai verb oai.pl?verb=ListIdentifiers&metadataPrefix=oai_dc&set=name_of_set is the same for every set value. Does anyone know about that ? Thanks, Laurence Lefaucheur ---------------------- Laurence Lefaucheur Biblibre http://www.biblibre.com

Import into catalogue failed, cannot un-import
by Jeffrey LePage 22 Dec '08

22 Dec '08

Hello all: Because of a character set issue, an import of some MARC records failed. I can't simply reverse the import from the web interface. The import crashed and the web interface doesn't seem to recognize that the import happened. However, the records are still there in the database tables biblio, biblioitems, and items. My question is: Can I simply delete all records from these tables (biblio, biblioitems, items)? Or are there other tables I need to deal with? Or is there a way to do this from the web interface? -- Please avoid sending me Word or PowerPoint attachments. See http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/no-word-attachments.html P.S. Bernardo Gonzalez Kriegel informs me that the problem I had with the character set was due to not using UTF-8 encoding. I believe this is correct, although I haven't yet had a chance to test it. Thanks Bernardo!

problem importing MARC records, probably a character set issue
by Jeffrey LePage 22 Dec '08

22 Dec '08

People, I've been working on converting an Athena-exported bunch of MARC records to a format Koha likes. My latest script seems to convert everything nicely except... ...Around the 117th entry the import into catalogue fails. On inspection I detected a non-ascii character in the 117th record. Specifically, it's an 'e' with an accent, as in Andre'. This is the first time in the file that a non-ascii character ( a character above 127 ) occurs. Has anyone had experience with this? I'm using MARC::Record, MARC::Field, etc. to do the conversion. Interestingly, the MARC files that come directly from Athena import just fine (except that the barcode info doesn't get imported because of the 852/952 issue). I'll post more details after I get some sleep. -- Please avoid sending me Word or PowerPoint attachments. See http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/no-word-attachments.html
