Koha and UTF-8 (again)
by "Thommy M. Malmström" 06 Jan '09

06 Jan '09

Once again I took the fight with Koha to try to make it work with non ASCII characters. I've set the the following variables for MySQL, Apache and PHP: vim /etc/apache2/apache2.conf AddCharset UTF-8 .utf8 AddDefaultCharset UTF-8 vim/etc/php5/apache2/php.ini default_charset = "utf-8" vim /etc/mysql/my.cnf [client] character_set_client=utf8 [mysql] default-character-set=utf8 [mysqld] init-connect = 'SET NAMES utf8' character-set-server=utf8 collation-server=utf8_swedish_ci /etc/rc3.d/S19mysql restart mysql> SHOW VARIABLES LIKE 'character_set%'; +--------------------------+----------------------------+ | Variable_name | Value | +--------------------------+----------------------------+ | character_set_client | utf8 | | character_set_connection | utf8 | | character_set_database | utf8 | | character_set_filesystem | binary | | character_set_results | utf8 | | character_set_server | utf8 | | character_set_system | utf8 | | character_sets_dir | /usr/share/mysql/charsets/ | +--------------------------+----------------------------+ 8 rows in set (0.01 sec) mysql> SHOW VARIABLES LIKE 'collation%'; +----------------------+-----------------+ | Variable_name | Value | +----------------------+-----------------+ | collation_connection | utf8_general_ci | | collation_database | utf8_swedish_ci | | collation_server | utf8_swedish_ci | +----------------------+-----------------+ 3 rows in set (0.00 sec) However when I try to add an item it cuts of the text at the non ASCII char. Please look at the pictures here to see what I mean: http://thommym.blogspot.com/2009/01/koha-and-utf-8.html Also in I add text for members etc. with non ASCII chars in it it is cut at the non ASCII position. So, anyone to my rescue???

Z39.50 Incoming: Revisited
by carpentercarselibrary＠gmavt.net 06 Jan '09

06 Jan '09

Galen answered a question posed on Thu, Oct 30, 2008 at 4:41 PM by Lenora Oftedahl--re allowing outside clients to access a Koha database--thusly: "Assuming you're using Koha 3 with Zebra and that Zebra is configured to expose a public Z39.50 service, you would need to report the following: * server name * Z39.50 port * database name - by default, that will usually be 'biblios' The default Zebra configuration for MARC21 uses the Bib-1 attribute set." Could someone tell me the exact steps I need to take to configure Zebra to expose my Koha 3 db as a public Z39.50 service? Thanks! New Tutorial: Installing Koha on Ubuntu
by agiesler＠wisc.edu 06 Jan '09

06 Jan '09

I've posted an a fairly extensive guide for installing Koha 3.0 on Ubuntu 8.10. I hope some of you find it helpful. The guide assumes you're comfortable with technology but don't have experience with Linux or Koha. It begins with Ubuntu installation then walks through LAMP configuration, Koha installation, troubleshooting the installation process, and setting up sample data for testing. It ends with a reflection on some issues to consider before attempting a live Koha implementation. The result won't be a production system, but a test system to help you to understand and evaluate Koha. In case you find errors or omissions there's a link at the bottom of each page that will let you post comments. http://www.blazingmoon.org/guides/k3-on-u810-1.html ---------------------------------------- Andy Giesler www.blazingmoon.org University of Wisconsin-Madison

Importing records
by John Wesley Simpson 05 Jan '09

Howdy, I've been using Readerware from http://www.readerware.com/ to maintain my library. I have just installed Koha, and am having difficulty understanding how to get my library loaded into it. With Readerware, I can load a list of ISBN's from a text file and have Readerware automatically fill in the rest of the data for the books. How do I do this in Koha? So far, it appears that I can do this, but only one ISBN at a time? -- John Wesley Simpson Hibbs <john(a)swajime.com> SwaJime's Cove

I can do a search for say "guide", and get several books listed. It seems, though, that I cannot do a search for "*". How can I list all (24) of the books in the library? 24 down, ~1450 to go... -- John Wesley Simpson Hibbs <john(a)swajime.com> SwaJime's Cove

Questions on Koha 3.0
by Marie Wardall 05 Jan '09

05 Jan '09

I have a few questions that I hope someone can help me with. Sorry for all the questions and if the questions are duh questions. 1. Label Layouts (printing barcodes & Spine labels) unable to edit or create a new layout for barcodes—currently using the layouts that are there leaves us with title author information overlapping the barcode. How can I edit or create a new layout? I've followed the directions from the manual and have been able to do it in it an older version of Koha. 2. In Circulation when I have a patron up and I'm on the Checkout tab there are buttons across the top ie: Edit, Change Password, Add Child, Print, & More. I don't recall changing anything with these buttons but we are now missing the Print and the More buttons. Print allowed us to print a quick reminder for a student to take home with them about an overdue and the More button allowed us to set permissions for Patrons. If you know how to get those buttons back that would be great. 3. Along with the Print Button....When the page printed out before we had a replacement price listed on it along with the title, author, format, date due and status. We'd like to get replacement price to show up again when we get the Print and More buttons back. Does anyone know where we would do this? Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give us on these issues. Marie Marie J. Weeding
by Sharon Moreland 05 Jan '09

Hello, We have been on Koha 3.0 for a few months now and our libraries need to weed items. When was the 'Withdraw' authorized value added to Koha and more to the point, what is the purpose of this button at /catalogue/moredetail.pl? We are interested in hearing best practices for weeding items and permanently deleting them from the catalog (in 3.0). Sharon Moreland NExpress Shared Catalog
