Serials Textual Holdings in 866
by Zachary Spalding 06 Apr '10

06 Apr '10

I have some holding information in the 866$0 filed and was wondering what is the correct the 952 field to map that too? I have several libraries that have print serials but have different years and would like to assign each holding year to that specific library. Koha in libraries for the blind?
by Brevik, Thomas 06 Apr '10

06 Apr '10

Does anybody know if a library for the blind and sight impaired uses Koha? I have discussed Koha with a person working in such a library and he thought it might be a good system for this type of libraries. Many libraries for the blind have very old and specially adapted systems that needs replacing in the near future, so here is an opportunity I think. by Joann Ransom 06 Apr '10

Hi all, Very sorry but it is highly unlikely I will be able to make the scheduled Koha Community meeting tomorrow. Nothing to report re Koha domain names etc. All koha subcommitteee members were contacted to discuss whether any point in us meeting: answer no. Chris, Galen et al are all equally up with the play as I am. Position of Kaitiaki may be a discussion item. Cheers Jo. -- Joann Ransom RLIANZA Head of Libraries, Horowhenua Library Trust.

Tying different databases together
by Olugbenga Adara 03 Apr '10

03 Apr '10

Hello all, Happy Easter to everyone. I am trying to find out out to have a single search interface that will search koha, dspace, LANTEEAL and possible other online journals like jstor. I've been taking a look at dbwiz but i cant seem to get how to get it to search koha and helpful documentation. Also I've heard about solutions like libraryfind. My question now is, has anybody done this and can give me advice or pointers to documentation etc?, is it feasible? I will appreciate any help. Thanks Olugbenga Adara Mobile: 234-803-3220288

receiving magazines / serials with barcodes but NO item records
by Kurt Bodling 03 Apr '10

03 Apr '10

Is it possible to barcode magazines when they are received in the Serials module in a way that does NOT create a new item record for each issue received? If I create a subscription and do NOT check the box "Create an Item record when receiving this serial" then there seems to be no place to enter a barcode when I go to "Receive" a new issue. If I create a subscription and check the box "Create an Item record when receiving this serial" then there is a place to enter a barcode because the add Item record screen appears after the issue is marked "Arrived." But we don't want to create a new Item record. Barcoding a weekly publication upon receipt would create 52 item records a year. And some of our serials began publication in the 1800s. Either way, I don't believe we should have to clutter up the OPAC results screen with hundreds of item records under a bib record for a single serial title. Is there a way to suppress the display of those item records created when issues are received? Or, again, is it possible to barcode magazines when they are received in the Serials module in a way that does NOT create a new item record for each issue received? Merci, Kurt A. Re: [Koha] Help with setting up information to be displayed by catalog search
by Brenner, Martin 02 Apr '10

Hi Joe, If you look on that .doc that I linked to in the beginning, it shows a walk through. Granted, it is for Follett, so you may have to look information in different spots. ( http://people.oregonstate.edu/~reeset/marcedit/html/index.php<http://people.oregonstate.edu/%7Ereeset/marcedit/html/index.php>) I would recommend a few things that I figured out only after working on it for a while. First- Take some practice data and run through the steps first (maybe about 10-20 marc records.) That way, you get a feel for what is happening and you can import the small data set and see if it came through correctly without having to get rid of too much data if it goes wrong. Second- This might take extra time, but it will help out later. Don't export ALL of the data from the old system. Export it in chunks according to the item type. (Side note- you will have to define a few item types in Koha BK - book, MV - video, etc.) This way, you can easily assign the item type to the records without having to search through and figure out which is which in the raw records. Third- Don't be afraid to start fresh if you make a mistake in the process. You, and everyone else in the library, will have to live with the data in the system for a long time. If its slightly wrong, it will take a looong time to go through item by item to fix things, It WIL take time to correct in the front end it, but it will save a ton of time over the life span of the system. As for the reindexing part of your question, I am not as knowlegable about that as many other people on the list, so I am adding the list back into the conversation. (That way someone might find this information in the archives later on if they need it.) I hope you don't mind.
