Patron Cards & book labels
by Amir Seni 17 Aug '10

17 Aug '10

I personally think that selecting labels in koha takes too long. What I do is use the saved reports to query for barcodes and other fields, export to tab delimited field. Then import using the application "glabel" after having designed the label and selecting the items. I only query for books & not patrons. hope that helps. cheers

from marc 21 to Unimarc
by Daniel Legoff 17 Aug '10

17 Aug '10

Hi, willing to import data collected from a marc 21 repository (The canadian AMICUS) into our koha, wich is set up to import rcords in Unimarc ( which is the French standard and the one used by our usual data furnishers), I posted a message on this list a few days ago, asking about the existence of a Marc21 iso2709 to unimarc iso2709 translator I got a few answers, but they tell me how to convert "somethingMARC" into MARC 21, and not the other way around, or companies offer me to built up such a tool for us ; And I had no chance either asking the UNIMARC task force. I still believe someone somewhere must have developped something, for example using the USEMARCON tool. So I try again ! DATA MIGRATION REQUEST
by Keah, Humphrey (ICRAF) 17 Aug '10

17 Aug '10

Dear colleagues, I have checked for previous questions on migrating data from INMAGIC to KOHA on the KOHA users forum as we have just installed KOHA at the World Agroforestry Centre Library and are hoping to migrate data from INMAGIC version 9.0 to KOHA. Unfortunately I didn't get a useful answer. Could someone please help. We intend to migrate data from INMAGIC version 9.0 which is not MARC-based, to KOHA. Any help, will be highly be appreciated. New Spanish Manual
by Nicole Engard 17 Aug '10

17 Aug '10

Today I received a full Spanish translation of the Koha 3.2 manual! I have committed it to Git: http://git.koha-community.org/gitweb/?p=kohadocs.git;a=commit;h=d8747ccd584… and it will appear on the website shortly. Thank you to all involved in that translation this is a great addition to Koha and will make it so that many more people will benefit from reading the manual! Thanks again, Nicole, Documentation Manager PS. In Docbook there is a way to show credits other than just the author, but when we convert it to HTML on WordPress some of that is lost. Just be aware that in the code the appropriate attributions are made to all of those who have helped grow the manual!

OPACShelfBrowser + GoogleJackets leading to erroneous display
by Indranil Das Gupta 16 Aug '10

16 Aug '10

Hi all, I am using Koha 3.00.06.010 on Ubuntu 10.04 I tried enabling GoogleJackets pref under Enriched content. It's working, except when I use the Shelf Browser in tandem. Shelf Browser is returning the same cover image (and google books link) for all the books as you can see from the html output (see http://pastebin.ca/1917241) Looks to me its same as this earlier post - http://old.nabble.com/Koha-3.0.5-%2B-%22Browse-Shelf%22-issue-td27693200.ht… Apparently KOHA.Google.GetCoverFromIsbn() is being passed the same ISBN Any clue? -- Indranil Das Gupta Phone : +91-98300-20971 Blog : http://indradg.randomink.org/blog IRC : indradg on irc://irc.freenode.net Twitter : indradg -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Please exchange editable Office documents only in ODF Format. Re: [Koha] More export/import questions
by Scott Owen 16 Aug '10

Not exactly a "fix", but this will help you identify records that may have this issue (more than one 952 field contains the same barcode). In my case it was only 20 records out of 4,000+, all in the very first barcode range. I suspect that they may have originally been imported twice. Cut/paste to a blank file and save as get952.pl read the readme. Not pretty code, but it should work. ##################################StartScript################################ #!/usr/bin/perl ## #### README ##### ## ## Copy this script to the same directory as the "koha.mrk" file. ## run as get952.pl > OutputFileName ## example: perl get952.pl > output.txt ## ## This script reads a Koha MARC file produced from MARCedit (the "koha.mrk" file defined below) ## and prints out the 952 sub field "$p" data (barcode) one line at a time to a temporary file ## (tempfile.txt). ## The tempfile.txt file is then parsed (a backup file "tempfile.txt.bac" is created during the ## process). ## The output file will contain the barcode and the number of times that barcode was found in a 952 field. ## ## Example output: ## p70240 ## = 2 ## p70241 ## = 2 ## p70249 ## = 1 ## p70299 ## = 1 ## ## Both the "tempfile.txt" and "tempfile.txt.bac" are deleted at the end of the script. ## The original "koha.mrk" file is never changed. ## The MARCedit file MUST BE the *.mrk file and NOT a *.mrc file. ## You can change the input file (coded as "koha.mrk" below). ## The "count" portion of this script was copied from perlmonks.org ## ################### ###### $MARCfile = "koha.mrk"; ###### my $tempfile = "tempfile.txt"; open(MARCfile) or die("Could not open file."); open FILE, ">$tempfile" or die "unable to open $tempfilefile $!"; foreach $line (<MARCfile>) { chomp($line); if($line =~ m/^=952/i) #{print "$line"}; {$newline = "$line"; my @values = split(/\$/, $newline); foreach my $val (@values) { if($val =~ m/^p/i){ #print "$val\n"; print FILE "$val\n"; } } } } close FILE >$tempfile; my $tempfile = 'tempfile.txt'; my %seen = (); { local @ARGV = ($tempfile); local $^I = '.bac'; while(<>){ $seen{$_}++; next if $seen{$_} > 1; print; } } foreach my $keys ( sort {$seen{$b} <=> $seen{$a}} keys %seen) { print "$keys = $seen{$keys}\n"; } unlink($tempfile); unlink("tempfile.txt.bac"); ##################################EndScript############################# >>> Joel Harbottle<joel.harbottle(a)hotmail.com.au> 8/12/2010 11:15 AM >>> Hi Scott, As a Cataloguer, I have just noticed another potential problem in your snip from MarcEdit. I have copied and pasted your MarcEdit snip below, and have also put the problem(s) in bold text. ************************************* =942 \\$cBOOK =952 \\$bPINE$dPINE$kF HAN$p74238$r{dollar}11.96$t3$v2010-05-13$u4247 =952 \\$bPINE$r0.00$w2008-08-17$u266$kF HAN$p70265$v2008-08-17 =952 \\$bPINE$r0.00$dPINE$w2010-05-13$u4247$kF HAN$p74238$v2010-05-13 =952 \\$bPINE$dPINE$kF HAN$p70262$r{dollar}13.99$t2$u263 =952 \\$bPINE$dPINE$kF HAN$p70262$r0.00$v2008-08-17$w2008-08-17$u263 =952 \\$bPINE$dPINE$kF HAN$p70265$r{dollar}10.96$t5$u266 =952 \\$bPINE$dPINE$kF HAN$p74255$r{dollar}10.96$t6$u4264 ************************************** So, in your example, you have the same barcode(s) utilised twice in the listing of Items. I think I have a grasp of what need to be done. (seems to be a big bigger job than I was hoping for...) With that said.... I noticed another potential issue (maybe?). ************************************* =942 \\$cBOOK =952 \\$bPINE$dPINE$kF HAN$p74238$r{dollar}11.96$t3$v2010-05-13$u4247 =952 \\$bPINE$r0.00$w2008-08-17$u266$kF HAN$p70265$v2008-08-17 =952 \\$bPINE$r0.00$dPINE$w2010-05-13$u4247$kF HAN$p74238$v2010-05-13 =952 \\$bPINE$dPINE$kF HAN$p70262$r{dollar}13.99$t2$u263 =952 \\$bPINE$dPINE$kF HAN$p70262$r0.00$v2008-08-17$w2008-08-17$u263 =952 \\$bPINE$dPINE$kF HAN$p70265$r{dollar}10.96$t5$u266 =952 \\$bPINE$dPINE$kF HAN$p74255$r{dollar}10.96$t6$u4264 ************************************** In the above snip from MARCedit, the 3rd line and the 7th line both reference the same item ($p70265 -- barcode # 70265). Is this normal? Will the data in line 7 overwrite the data from line 3? ie: if line 3 contains the $v2008-08-17 field data, and line 7 does not, will the result be an empty $v field? Should I be concerned with this, or is this a normal occurrence? Thank you again for any insight. -Scott Owen Alma Public Schools _______________________________________________ Koha mailing list Koha(a)lists.katipo.co.nz http://lists.katipo.co.nz/mailman/listinfo/koha

Public Lists Query
by Peel Lisa 16 Aug '10

16 Aug '10

Hello Apologies for what is going to seem a very stupid question: I was under the impression that the public lists in the OPAC could be viewed by everyone but only edited/deleted by the original creator. However, have just realized that if any patron logs in to the OPAC they can indeed edit and delete all the public lists. We were hoping to use the public lists to create basic reading lists, new additions lists, etc until we have the acquisitions module up and running (we are going live tomorrow with the cat and circ modules). Could someone confirm that indeed anyone logged in can edit the public lists or advise what to change so they are read only to anyone but the creator? These images will be scaled on-the-fly to 72ppi for on-screen display and may look somewhat pixelated there. However, the pdf standard provides for both a “display quality” image and a “print quality” image. When the cards are printed, the “print quality” image (300ppi) will be used and the images will look the same as those uploaded. The short of this is: Don’t use the on-screen images as a judge of the print quality of the image. When preparing images for use with Koha, you should always begin with a picture of at least 300ppi and dimensions equal to or greater than the finished dimensions you desire. The aspect ratio (width:height) should also remain consistent after editing. If you have an image over 300ppi, scale the ppi first. Then scale the dimensions so that either width or height is the desired finished dimension. You can then crop the other dimension to finish. Reporting & Patching Koha Bugs by Nicole C. Engard Reporting and patching Koha bugs can be a simple process if you follow the many tutorials on the wiki and mailing lists. For those who are all ready to start patching, here are the steps you want to follow: 1. Report a bug (or enhancement) 2. Make yourself the assignee for that bug and change the Status to ‘Assigned’ so that others know you’re working on the bug 3. Write your patch and send it to the patches list 4. Change the bug Importance to ‘PATCH-Sent’ and attach your patch to the bug Following these simple steps will keep everyone in the loop as you work on and fix bugs/features in Koha. Learn Koha through Videos by Nicole C. Engard Many libraries have been creating videos to help train their staff on Koha. I personally have started a series (that I hope to release once a week) of tutorial videos on Koha 3.2. For more videos check out the Koha channel on YouTube (and feel free to add your videos to the channel if they’re not already there. Koha in Libraries British Library of Development Studies Implementing Koha by Andrew Buxton The British Library of Development Studies at Brighton, UK is implementing Koha on Debian Linux primarily to run its Z39.50 service. Records will be copied across regularly from Ibex, the library system developed in-house. About one third of the records are for journal articles. Ibex does not use a MARC format so a conversion routine has been developed to produce a text file which is then processed using MarcEdit. Further information from Andrew Buxton, a.buxton(a)ids.ac.uk Combining open source forces: Koha search block in Moodle by Jonathan Harker On Saturday 24 July, Wellington Summer of Tech held its 2010 Hackfest – a day of intense coding, soft-drinks and hourly prizes, as a warm up for its Summer of Tech student internship programme at the end of the year, the New Zealand summer. Brendan Vercoelen from Victoria University worked with Jonathan Harker from Catalyst IT on a Koha search block for the learning management system Moodle, as a first attempt to get these two open source projects to work more closely together. The Koha search block, part of the existing Moodle external search block, allows students and teachers to search by keywords, sends the request to Koha over SRU (Search / Retrieval via URL) and parses and displays the MARCXML results. The result can be seen in http://www.flickr.com/photos/4nitsirk/4830516298/ This block represents a great kick-off – in the future, we’d like to see a Koha record available as a Moodle resource type, so that (for example) a Moodle course can include a suggested reading list, where the item is fetched from the learning institution’s Koha library system, including its lending status. Previous work by Piers Harding (also at Catalyst) has enabled Moodle and Koha to share single sign-on using SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language). The Hackfest allowed students to work closely with a mentor on a pre-defined project and gave them the opportunity to learn from experienced programmers. After 5 hours of programming, the students presented their results to the other participants of the Hackfest and invited guests. As you know, we will hold this year’s KohaCon in Wellington from 25-27 October 2010, followed by a Hackfest. You still have time to register. As you will be in the country of the birth of Koha, why not pay a visit to Koha’s proper birthplace? We have planned an exciting trip to Levin, just north of Wellington, where everything started, for 28 October 2010. This excursion does not only give you the opportunity to visit Levin, it’s library, and meet the mayor, but also participate in a powhiri, a traditional Maori welcome ceremony. The Kawiu is a contemporary Marae (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marae) and you will be eating in the usual dining room alongside locals. That will give you a real-life experience. You can find the trip details at http://www.kohacon10.org.nz/2010/program/levintrip.html and will have to register by 10 October 2010 for organizational reasons. Koha packaging talk at Debconf by Lars Wirzenius Lars Wirzenius discussed lessons learned from making Debian packages for Koha in a talk at Debconf10. Koha was used as an example of an upstream project to bring up challenges they face when trying to Debian packages made, and things they may improve upon to make their software easier to package. The talk and slides are at http://liw.fi/swimming-upstream/, with videos to become available later. Newsletter edited by Nicole C.
