after migration issues
by Scott Owen 18 Aug '10

18 Aug '10

Hello again all, I am in the process up migrating from Koha 2.2.9 to Koha 3.2xx (used git upgrade to latest rev.). I *seem* to be pulling my items in correctly......but...... Unfortunately, I am still not able to place items on "hold". I can check items out fine. Is there a "item available" setting I'm missing in my MARC fields ??? Is there a required setting in the administration of Koha I'm missing?? Could someone with a working "holds" selection on version of Koha 3.2.x please export a MARC record and post it? (so I can check it against my 2.29 MARCs and my 3.2xx MARCs to make sure I'm importing all the fields I need to import) Here is an example of what I'm seeing (This user has no items on hold, and their are items available) Cannot Place Hold Too Many Holds: SCOTT OWEN has too many holds. Removing items with no barcodes
by Barry Cannon 18 Aug '10

18 Aug '10

Hello, We have a large number of items that have no barcodes attached and would like to remove them. I was considering just getting rid of them from mysql but I am concerned that this might have some problems elsewhere. Is there any utility we can use to remove these items and then, when they are gone, remove any bibs that are now item-less? Federated Library based on Koha
by Anselm Olweny 18 Aug '10

18 Aug '10

Dear List members, Recently I was involved in setting up a federated library system using koha for African parliamentary libraries. See http://fpl.apkn.org/ In this set up all the libraries (18) are using a single database If you visit the particpating libraries found at http://fpl.apkn.org/ you will notice that they all have there own look and feel as well as different addresses for both the opac and staff interface. For example the opac for the Parliament of Kenya library is accessed using http://ke.fpl.apkn.org and its staff interface is at http://ke.fpl.apkn.org:8080; whereas the opac for the Uganda Parliamentary Library is accessed using http://ug.fpl.apkn.organd its staff interface is at http://ug.fpl.apkn.org:8080. Using these addresses these libraries are able to search only their collection. With this mail I intend to share with you how I achieved this, just in case someone may want to develop the same or even help me improve. The illustration below is limited to the creation of a single participating library, however, the steps described were peroformed for all the 18 libraries. The default koha installation serves as the Federated Parliamentary Library interface After successfully installing koha: - I duplicate the perl scripts located in koha/opac/cgi-bin/opac and koha/intranet/cgi-bin/. - I duplicated the templates located in /koha/opac/cgi-bin/opac/htdocs/opac-tmpl/prog/en/modules and koha/intranet/htdocs/intranet-tmpl/prog/en/modules - I duplicated the files located in koha/opac/htdocs/opac-tmpl/prog/en/includes and koha/intranet/htdocs/intranet-tmpl/prog/en/includes - I duplicated the file opac.css located in koha/opac/htdocs/opac-tmpl/prog/en/css - I duplicated the file Auth.pm located in koha/lib/C4 - I identified a two letter code to represent the individual libraries e.g. "ug" for Uganda and "ke" for kenya. These codes were also used in distinguishing the opac and staff interface URLs - I renamed all the duplicated files, adding the two letter code e.g. "ug" as a suffix to the file names i.e a file like opac-main.pl becomes opac-mainug.pl, masthead.inc becomes mastheadug.inc; opac-main.tmpl, becomes opac-mainug.pl and opac.css becomes opacug.css - I edited all the renamed files and modified all links in each of them to reflect the new file names e.g. a reference to a file like /cgi-bin/koha/ opac-search.pl was modified to /cgi-bin/koha/opac-searchug.pl; opac-bottom.inc was modifed to opac-bottomug.inc etc in all files in which it occurs - In the perl scripts I change C4::Auth; to C4::Authug; and C4::Auth qw; to C4::Authug qw; in all ocurances - I created a new DNS record for the new library e.g ug.fpl.apkn.org for the Uganda Parliament Library and enabled the "Repeat this virtualhost stanza" found in /koha/etc/koha-httpd.confSavitra's advice see http://old.nabble.com/Re%3A-Koha-as-a-federated-library-p28289266.html) (thanks to - I created new virtual host entries for the new library opac and staff interfaces in /koha/etc/koha-httpd.conf - I restarted the apache server - I accessed the individual library opac e.g. the uganda Parliamentary library opac using http://ug.fpl.apkn.org - I created logo and banner images and transfered them to koha/opac/htdocs/opac-tmpl/prog/images and koha/intranet/htdocs/intranet-tmpl/prog/img - I edited mastheadxx.inc, opacxx.css, loginxx.css and staff-globalxx.css to achieve required look and feel I hope this may help anyone who might need to achieve the same kind of library with koha. I will be glad to provide any clarification and receive advise from you all. Thanks Anselm O

Debian packages, Squeeze and updated libyaz
by Robin Sheat 18 Aug '10

18 Aug '10

Recently Debian updated their zebra-related stuff in Squeeze, and dropped libyaz3 in favour of libyaz4. This meant that I spent some time trying to work out why zebra would work on the production system (which I was being conservative about updating) and not my newer test systems. It turns out that the version combinations currently in Debian make Zebra quite unhappy, and it will segfault. You won't see this happen if you run the rebuild_zebra.pl script, but you will get this if you run it with -v: 11:18:31-02/08 zebraidx(12790) [log] enabling shadow spec=/var/lib/koha/library/biblios/shadow:4G 11:18:31-02/08 zebraidx(12790) [log] cache_fname = /var/lib/koha/library/biblios/shadow/cache 11:18:31-02/08 zebraidx(12790) [log] dir /tmp/qKmpRDFzQd/biblio 11:18:31-02/08 zebraidx(12791) [log] zebra_start 2.0.43 abd433d1a315576cf1f4a53f2c70365f9a76477f (the segfault occurs where the PID changes from 12790 to 12791.) And then, several lines later: 11:18:31-02/08 zebraidx(12791) [warn] previous transaction didn't reach commit and nothing in zebra will have been updated. Fortunately, the version in the indexdata.dk repository doesn't suffer from this, so if you're using the Debian Koha packages I suggest performing the steps outlined here: http://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/Koha_3.2_on_Debian_Squeeze#What_about_Z… The Debian bug I filed for this is here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=591307 -- Robin Sheat Catalyst IT Ltd. ✆ +64 4 803 2204 GPG: 5957 6D23 8B16 EFAB FEF8 7175 14D3 6485 A99C EB6D

Holds Queue question
by Sharon Moreland 18 Aug '10

18 Aug '10

Hello Koha and LibLime folks, We demonstrated PTFS Harley 1.1 to our member libraries today and they were anxious about how they will find the correct item to pull for transfer from the holds queue report. A bit of background, we currently use an older version of the holds queue that we maintain by editing our templates (currently on Koha 3.01.00.037, not LEK). It shows the brief title and a specific barcode for each item to be pulled and transferred to fill a hold. In Harley, we are given a brief title and no barcode, just the note "Any available copy." I'm looking for feedback from those of you on a system that uses a holds queue report similar to the one in Harley (we have independent branches OFF). The default holds queue in 3.2 is identical to Harley. How do you use the holds queue report to find the correct item to fill the hold on titles such as Naruto, Go Diego Go or YuYu Hakusho that have the same 245 $a titles, but unique $p (parts) $n (numbers) or $b (subtitles)? I could see problems with TV series on DVD, such as Weeds or True Blood, as well. Just in case there's confusion - our current holds queue looks like this: http://screencast.com/t/NzljNTg2ZjMt and we will be changing to this: http://screencast.com/t/NDUzNjk5Yj Sharon Moreland Technology Consultant Northeast Kansas Library System NExpress Shared Catalog http://catalog.nexpresslibrary.org

previous trouble bulk loading patrons semi-solved
by Linda Culberson 18 Aug '10

18 Aug '10

I had emailed the list earlier about the problem I was having bulk loading thousands of patrons at a time using the import_borrowers.pl assuming that it was a "time out" issue. However, I discovered that part of the problem was having either unescaped single or double quotes in some of the fields. The next problem I discovered concerns the required branchcode and categorycode fields. If I put in a default, they load. If I load them single quoted as I have for the other fields, they don't. I have also discovered, with our installation, at least, the error on the staff page is always: 'Critical field "categorycode" missing' and 'critical field "branchcode" missing' even if the error is really something unrelated (like an unescaped single or double quote somewhere in another field). The error in the log is :"Use of uninitialized value in pattern match (m//) at /usr/share/koha/intranet/cgi-bin/tools/import_borrowers.pl line 156, <fh00001kohatest.txt> line 12435., referer: http://koha.mdah.state.ms.us:8080/cgi-bin/koha/tools/import_borrowers.pl" We are on Koha version 3.00.05.003 and Perl version 5.008008 The good news is that although the staff's categorycodes have to be manually updated, I have 12430 patrons loaded! -- Linda Culberson lculber(a)mdah.state.ms.us Archives and Records Services Division Ms. Dept. of Archives& History P. Release 3.2
by Lori Bowen Ayre 18 Aug '10

18 Aug '10

Hi Galen and all, I'm wondering if we could get an update on the status of 3.2 I just saw that Chris suggested it might be stable enough for someone to use in production. Does that mean it will be the official release soon? As I recall, the estimate for release was just 3-4 weeks and that was at ALA (end of June).....so, any ETA? Lori
