HELP!!! Need RFP specifications
by Buster 07 Mar '11

Good morning, y'all. We are currently working on selecting a new ILS for our library to replace our Dinosaur Dynix system and are leaning heavily toward Koha. I am not nearly tech savvy enough to migrate and install it myself so we will definitely need a good vendor to handle that for us. Because of the limitations of our particular jurisdiction, we will need to do a Request For Proposals and go through a bidding process. My problem is I have been asked to come up with the specifications for our RFP and have no clue where to start. It occurred to me to draw on this Brain Trust and ask my fellow US systems folks on here for assistance. Why "reinvent the wheel", as the cliche' goes. So, if it isn't too much trouble and doesn't violate your system's confidentiality, would some of you mind forwarding to my private email (storypage at gmail.com) any specifications and/or RFPs you used when you switched to Koha? It would save me an awful lot of work and headaches. Alternately, could you give me a few hints on how to get started? We are primarily looking at contracting out server setup, migration, training and support. We will no doubt have very different needs from yours, but it will at least give me a starting point and some ideas. Thanks from the clueless, --Jim Maroon -- ================================================== "The man, who, by his own and his family's labour, can provide a sufficiency of food and raiment and a comfortable dwelling place, is not a poor man."--William Cobbett, *Cottage Economy*, 1826.

Re: [Koha] bulk BiblioAddsAuthorities?
by Stefano Bargioni 07 Mar '11

Very strange that 001 in authority records is no autogetenerated. Is this correct in Koha? Or is this a bug in Koha 325? In my Koha 323, bulkmarcimport -a generates 001. Pete, maybe you can try a test: add manually some 001s editing the xml file, import, rebuild_zebra -a, link your bibs, rebuild_zebra -b, and search for authors related to 001s. If this works, the problem is how to generate 001s. Please, note that each auth record I prepared for import contains an empty 001 ≤controlfield tag="001"≥≤/controlfield≥ Perhaps it triggers the generation of the value... I am working on explicitly adding these to both biblio and auth records. 001, and 003 might be added automatically when a Marc record is edited, but not when bulkmarcimport is used. I was really surprised to see that Koha is not automatically generating 001, and 003. > > So basically I am going to add 001, and 003 info to both biblio and auth records, then try your method again. > > Thanks for sticking with me :) > > Pete. > > On Fri, Mar 4, 2011 at 5:46 AM, Stefano Bargioni <bargioni(a)pusc.it> wrote: > The main difference between your marcxml auth record and my records is the absence of the 001 controlfield. > In my opinion, this make impossibile to link your auth record with biblio ones. > Here I compare one of my records with yours (I used a trick to avoid stripping out of xml tags using ≤...≥ delimiters). > My record was constructed by a tool I prepared and than imported with bulkmarcimport.pl in a Koha 323. > To explain the absence of the 001, maybe we need to know which Koha version you are working on. > Regards. importing a full LoC set of authorities
by hansbkk＠gmail.com 07 Mar '11

07 Mar '11

I haven't started actually cataloging yet, other than assembling a batch of customized MARC records for a subset of our biblios, starting with a pretty extensive video collection. I intend to take as much advantage as possible of well-enforced standard Authority records, but am starting to appreciate how much extra work will be involved if I have to manually look up one-at-a-time all the relevant subjects and people via the public interfaces offered on the web - genre/forms don't seem such a problem as I'm planning on only actually using a small subset of them. So I'm exploring the possibility of importing the full set of OCLC/LoC authority records into my Koha database before I start importing my biblio records. The subjects aren't so bad, apparently under 300,000, but I believe the names side of things are several million. Will doing this greatly slow down my Koha? Our intended production server is 2GB Core Duo 2Ghz, and we're not likely to have more than a dozen concurrent users in the early stages - both OPAC and staff combined. Disk space isn't a problem - I've got a spare 15+ TB available on our filer's LVM 8-). Also my understanding is that the link_bibs script does actually work, as long as the authority-governed fields don't have existing/conflicting $9 fields, just the exactly-matching name or subject strings - and updated zebra indexes - and of course properly configured MARC frameworks. I've seen some references to using the regular biblio import script for authority records (accompanied by statements that the authority import script is deprecated), but I've seen just as many reports that people have had trouble getting that to work. It also seems that nothing will automatically handle the bib-to-authority linking at import time, that it *has* to be done via the link_bibs script. Confirmation of the above would be greatly appreciated, as would (even more so) any explanations on where I've gone off track.

Items are not added in records

The items are not added in record. It is not displayed in any view - MARC, ITEM and others. But when items are searched for barcode printing, they are displayed without the features to add to the label. The check box and 'Add' don't appear. If 'Edit Items' is clicked the items are there. I checked the database, no items are written in 'Item' table. i tried the following command: sudo -u koha perl -I /usr/share/koha/lib /usr/share/koha/bin/migration_tools/rebuild_zebra.pl -b -v -w it output the following: . . . . 13:40:47-03/03 zebraidx(3905) [log] Records: 57000 i/u/d 10/56990/0 13:40:53-03/03 zebraidx(3905) [log] Records: 58000 i/u/d 19/57981/0 13:40:58-03/03 zebraidx(3905) [log] Records: 59000 i/u/d 28/58972/0 13:41:11-03/03 zebraidx(3905) [log] Merge 14.0% completed; 61 seconds remaining 13:41:21-03/03 zebraidx(3905) [log] Merge 40.3% completed; 29 seconds remaining 13:41:31-03/03 zebraidx(3905) [log] Merge 57.6% completed; 22 seconds remaining 13:41:41-03/03 zebraidx(3905) [log] Merge 59.6% completed; 27 seconds remaining 13:41:51-03/03 zebraidx(3905) [log] Merge 70.0% completed; 21 seconds remaining 13:42:01-03/03 zebraidx(3905) [log] Merge 76.0% completed; 18 seconds remaining 13:42:11-03/03 zebraidx(3905) [log] Merge 81.4% completed; 16 seconds remaining 13:42:21-03/03 zebraidx(3905) [log] Merge 87.3% completed; 11 seconds remaining 13:42:27-03/03 zebraidx(3905) [fatal] Bad block size -8 in pos=511075 zebraidx: isamb.c:549: open_block: Assertion `p->size >= 0' failed. ==================== CLEANING ==================== I checked for any changes in settings found no changes at all. software error
by Klaas Chielens 07 Mar '11

I think I screwed up some setting somewhere but I can't figure out exactly where. When trying to add a record through Z39.50 search, the moment i press "save" (so data is shown correctly) I get: Software error: Tag "" is not a valid tag. at /usr/share/koha/lib/C4/Biblio.pm line 2834 if anyone has a clue what the cause (or even better, the solution) might be; i'd be glad to hear :-) K. Copies available… but only if the OPAC language is English
by Mirko 05 Mar '11

Dear list, as stated in the subject: when I search in the OPAC, in the results page I get "Availability: Copies available for loan:" etc. -- but only if the OPAC language is English. If it's German, Turkish, Spanish, Polish or Russian, I get "No copies available" (in the resp. language) [if it's French i get "Erreur 500"]. Is that a known problem? Does it work as it should for others? Did I do something wrong with the translation files? (I do not really remember how i installed them, I had to do it manually I think). I'm on Koha 3.2.5 using the Debian-packages on Squeeze, OPACXSLTResultsDisplay is on. Any help is appreciated, Mirko
