Seeking a KOHA expert for webinar Q&A
by Simon Ball 21 Aug '13

21 Aug '13

Hello all I apologise if this is a misuse of the list, but I wasn't sure how best to proceed otherwise. EIFL.net holds regular free webinars on free / open source library software, intended for our network of libraries in 48 developing and transition countries but open to all. Last year, as a follow-up to a webinar on VuFind, we invited the VuFind developer and expert Demian Katz to deliver a Q&A webinar - i.e. a short overview of new developments then a Q&A session with delegates, many of whom sent their questions in advance. In a survey, our libraries have told us that a similar Q&A webinar on KOHA would be much welcomed. So I am writing to see if there are any KOHA developers or expert users out there who might be prepared to deliver a one-hour Q&A webinar for librarians in developing and transition countries, perhaps in September? I'm afraid we cannot pay a fee but we can provide the webinar software and a keen audience! If you might be able to help, or know someone who might, please contact me directly (don't reply to the list unless appropriate as I don't want to clutter folks inboxes). Many thanks for your time - and again my apologies if this is off-topic for this list. Re: [Koha] How frequently to run zebra rebuild and what switches

All the installations I have done through the Debian >packages always have the zebra incremental indexing properly set in cron >and it is usually set to run every 5 minutes. Quite apart from running it as root (and if it's automated, no need for the -v), the normal cron job is *incremental* (-z) and this user is running a *rebuild* (-r) every morning, which is absolutely necessary if any cataloguers have deleted a biblio, overwritten a "fast add" with a Z39.50, changed the 001/003 combination, etc etc. We only run ./bin/migration_tools/rebuild_zebra.pl -b -r -v -x and (less frequently) ./bin/migration_tools/rebuild_zebra.pl -a -r -v manually and at the request of our cataloguers. If we've got a couple of conscientious ones playing catch-up on older biblios imported from spreadsheets or fast-adds, this can be as often as every 20 minutes (but it's trivial to do.) One of my "to do" jobs is to incorporate a script into the staff-admin page so that certain (senior) cataloguers can run this without calling me. The cataloguers cannot work without it -- we insist that every "entry" is verified in the OPAC at the time of cataloguing to ensure that what our users see is what the cataloguers intended. Hence the need to run -r fairly promptly. The search function down-time, while zebra is "cleaning", is only a couple of seconds, particularly if you clean the logs, sessions, imports and zebraqueue every 24 hours. Best - Paul

Uniform titles
by Hillyard, Cecil 21 Aug '13

21 Aug '13

Uniform titles are visible in the regular staff view but not 'clickable'. In Bib records. 240 only clickable if you view it in Marc, but it does not work right. It is not an authorized heading. 730 is an authorized heading but is not a linked or clickable Don't know about 630. Can one make these "clickable" like subject headings/authors. ....RDA work records and such. We are on 3.08.05.000 Thanks, __________________________ Cecil Hillyard Cataloger Washoe County Library Technical Services Reno, NV 89505 www.washoecountylibrary.us

BIb record matching on ISBN 10, 13
by McMurdo, Thomas 20 Aug '13

20 Aug '13

Hello, As we add new libraries to our consortium catalog, I find that we are encountering bib record duplication. Most of this duplication appears to be due to one library using a record that has a 10 digit ISBN, while another library used a record that has a 13 digit ISBN. I am sure that this is a problem many of you have encountered. I would like to pose a couple of questions to the group: First, is it your experience that Koha only matches on the first instance of an ISBN in the 020 field? Does the matching engine follow through and check the second 020 field for a matching ISBN? Second, would the development of a built in ISBN 10 to ISBN 13 converter in Koha matching reduce the number of record duplicates? My inclination is that it would. Thanks for your thoughts on this. Queston on itemcallnumber system preference and item call numbers in general.
by Manos PETRIDIS 20 Aug '13

20 Aug '13

I want to comment on a couple of issues that I've encountered as it regards call numbers in koha, hoping that they may be of interest to other users as well.: Is there a way to have complex expressions in the itemcallnumber system preference? For example, in MARC21 I would prefer having call numbers formatted as "999.99 Aut YYYY" where 999.99 are the first five digits of DDC code, Aut are the first three characters of the soundex of Author name and YYYY is the copyright year, I have kept the "082ab" default value, and the items' call numbers have been created accordingly. While I can update the items table once, using something like the following query, this is not reftected nor in the search sesults of existing biblios, nor in newly created item records' call numbers. UPDATE items it LEFT JOIN biblioitems on (it.biblioitemnumber=biblioitems.biblioitemnumber) LEFT JOIN biblio on (biblioitems.biblionumber=biblio.biblionumber) SET it.itemcallnumber = CONCAT ( LEFT(LTRIM(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(LTRIM(it.itemcallnumber), '''', '' ), ' ', '' ), '/', '' ), '_', '' ), '.', '' )), 3), '.', SUBSTRING(LTRIM(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(LTRIM(it.itemcallnumber), '''', '' ), ' ', '' ), '/', '' ), '_', '' ), '.', '' )), 4, 2), ' ', LEFT(LTRIM(RTRIM(SOUNDEX(biblio.author))), 3), ' ', CONVERT(biblio.copyrightdate, CHAR(4)) ) ; a) Does koha provide for such functionality? b) How may I modify my SQL statement so that it would use the 092ab entry if filled, otherwise use 082ab? c) How may I modify itemcallnumber system preference so that it would use the 092ab entry if filled, otherwise use 082ab? Kind Regards, Manos

Koha indexing and searching
by Phillip Ponchot 20 Aug '13

20 Aug '13

I recently checked to see if I had zebrasrv running and then assumed that the indexing was done by the zebra server. I also see that the lock files etc belong to www.data. (Linux Server). I did the following via ssh: (the directory location below is correct) 1. Exported KOHA_CONF=/usr/local/koha/koha-conf.xml 2. Exported PERL5LIB=/usr/local/koha/lib 3. Ran the following command: /usr/local/koha/bin/migration_tools/rebuild_zebra.pl -r -b -a 4. Restarted the Linux Server. I then attached to the web site http://catalog.livingstonpubliclibrary.org/ Whenever I search for anything I get the following results: No Result found ! No results match your search for “testing” in Livingston-Park County Public Library Catalog. I had a couple of issues with the script being able to lock the Koha ..LCK files so I gave these files the same rights as the owner (www.data) and tried again. Everything seemed to work ok. I tried attaching again and searching and still have the error. If anyone could please give me some idea of what I am doing wrong or how to fix this issue. Is it possible that the website is running the nozebra indexing? It is my understanding that if Zebra Server is installed (and you are using a website), then Koha is using Zebra Indexing? phillip ponchot pponchot(a)live.com

Zebra Indexing
by Phillip Ponchot 20 Aug '13

20 Aug '13

Koha installed version: 3.00.00.107 I'm trying to re-index my catalog and of course, something is not working. I've read tons of documentation and I am still having an issue as the catalog search is not working. As I understand, you must export these two variables before beginning: export KOHA_CONF=/usr/local/koha/etc/koha-conf.xmlexport PERL5LIB=/usr/local/koha/lib I've tried to export them both as root and the user www-data.to whom the files belong I then run the following command: /usr/local/koha/bin/migration_tools/rebuild_zebra.pl -r -b -a If I run the command as root, the indexing starts but I get some rights issues. If I run the command as www-data, the indexing stops immediately on line 5 of the zebra script complaining that it can't find the C4 directory (even though it is exported - (export PERL5LIB=/usr/local/koha/lib) If anyone can give me the correct steps to get the indexing working again, I would be eternally grateful as I've spent the last 15 hours trying to get the index back up. I even went into koha and gave total rights to root where the scripting was failing. Finally it ran and there are files new files created in /usr/local/koha/var/lib/zebradb/authorities/register and in /usr/local/koha/var/lib/zebradb/biblios/register (i.e. sort12-0.mf) but when I restart the server, the catalog search is still not working. I'm assuming that zebra gets the files for indexing from /usr/local/koha/var/lib/zebradb/authorities/register and /usr/local/koha/var/lib/zebradb/biblios/register. Thanks for any suggestions and/or help. Phillp

Koha reindexing - What to do now
by Phillip Ponchot 20 Aug '13

20 Aug '13

Hi everyone: I re-indexed my Koha search using the following procedures: 1. Run sudo -s 2. Export these variables: a. export KOHA-CONF=/usr/local/koha/etc/koha-conf.xml b. export PERL5LIB=/usr/local/koha/lib/ 3. Run /usr/local/koha/bin/migration_tools/rebuild_zebra.pl -r -b -a 4. Everything went ok without error. I then went to the following directories and verified they had new files: /usr/local/koha/var/lib/zebradb/authorities/register /usr/local/koha/var/lib/zebradb/biblios/register New files were in this directory but was showing the owner and group was root. Since before they were www-data:www-data I changed the ownership. 5. I restarted the zebra daemons: restart zebra daemon: /etc/init.d/koha/zebra-daemon restart restart zebra-queue /etc/init.d/koha/zebraqueue-daemon restart note: not sure that the zebra-queue was previous running. Tried only doing the zebra-daemon by itself also. When I logged into the website and tried a catalog search on "testing" and then on "king" I received this message for each search. I know "testing" worked before. o Result found ! No results match your search for “testing” in Livingston-Park County Public Library Catalog. Does anyone know how the zebra-daemon loads these files: usr/local/koha/var/lib/zebradb/authorities/register /usr/local/koha/var/lib/zebradb/biblios/register Thanks for any suggestions as I'm trying to decide what to do next to get this to work.
