While I agree that icons & item types can be improved, they are currently working. So, I'm just asking if you will please make that a lower priority. To my mind, some of items that should be moved up on the priority/critical list are problems that MARC users encounter: 1)the subject heading glitches (other subject fields and subfields not being indexed or displayed) 2)getting multiple notes fields to display, 2)the publication date display, search by date, and "search between" in advanced search, 3)the item level itemcallnumber display (works in MARC view, not in Normal view) -- Kim Scannell _______________________________________________ Koha mailing list Koha(a)lists.katipo.co.nz http://lists.katipo.co.nz/mailman/listinfo/koha

Paul, The GMD is the General Material Designation. There are 2 lists of approved terms in the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules. One for the US and another for the UK. It is used in field 245 subfield h. They are a short list of very general types of materials, less than 20 terms. For example, they have videorecording as a term. To see if it is VHS or DVD or CD-V or some other format other places in the record must be consulted. Most likely the Specific Material Desiginations (SMD) used in field 300. Wednesday, June 15, 2005 17:39 CDT Hi, Stephen et alii, Taking the ItemType breakdown and clever material representative OPAC icons as a starting point, I have been working on designs of icons for other ItemType categories (specifically in the context of GMD-based ItemTypes requested by Chris Jones at DSA, which differed in degrees from what you created for NPL: BTW, when I am done, I can post these, in case they might be of use for other Koha'ites, as I think they might be, especially for school library settings). Given the complexity of the genre categories with some GMDs (text, videorecording, etc.), I am wondering, Stephen, if it would be practicable to use a simpler set of ItemTypes and have the OPAC icon called by another field. I assume there is a line of code that tells Koha if ItemType = X then icon = X'. If it isn't an unreasonable request, Stephen -- keeping in mind my lack of programming skills -- could you point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance for any and all words of wisdom. displayed homebranch and holdingbranch is not consistent on intranet mode

Chris, symlinks?! <zoom: right over top of head> Owen, I think I understood your explanation. Otherwise, if I am understanding what you wrote, we would pretty much have to define 45 ItemTypes just to cover all the possibilities for books in the library (14 core genres accepted in principle x 3 levels + 3 levels non-fiction: each genre or non-fiction at each level is slightly different so as to be distinct) let alone the other GMDs and equipment ItemTypes. In discussing this stuff with Chris Jones, I had referred to IF...THEN statements -- something familiar to me from way back in highschool programming, when we played with Fortran, Pascal and the like -- so that I could work out flowcharts for what decision processes would be needed. I don't know how Chris planned to execute this, but what he and I were discussing was building in code (he has experience coding; I don't) to assess an item -- a book, say --, and determine what icon should be displayed. Anyway, I have been working on these awful/awesome flowcharts for what would have to be checked. For most of the GMDs, it was pretty straightforward. For text (books), videorecordings and motion pictures it is truly frightening. Without getting into it too much, the basic breakdown would be a list something like this: · Check textstring from GMD (245 $h) -- will be null for books · Check other-instruction -- if null, check value at 008-22 · Check value at Target Audience (008-22) -- 1 of 3 possibilities · Check value at Literary Form (008-32: Fiction vs Non-Fiction; also would yield one specific genre CJ wanted, Humor) · Check textstring from Genre (655) -- 1 of 13 possibilities (14th = Humor) · Check ItemType code (952 $a) Following the different branches of decisions made yields icon displayed. At this point, I started hoping there might be a much simpler way, defining another variable, in the MARC record, that would instruct what icon to use. If I understand correctly, that is really part of what ItemType is doing in the NPL template anyway. There would still be a bank of images in one directory, and there would only be one copy of each, but the one displayed would be called/determined by another textstring variable. To use the code line you provided (thanks much!), I imagined it might be possible to have something like this: <img src="/includes/images/.gif"> since, when cataloguing, we have to describe the works in hand anyway, what's one more subfield in MARC. However, if I understand properly, we would have to map where this new variable 'icontype' is coming from (suggestions were another 952 subfield or a 09x field $a). Would something like that be possible? Is there a better way? Steven F. No, there's no such line of code. The icons work because their file names are the same as the item's itemtype code or itemtype description. So if the itemtype code is 'AF', then the template says: <img src="/includes/images/.gif"> ...And in your images directory, you have AF.gif, AV.gif, AC.gif, SF.gif, etc. This is a clumsy system, but it's what worked given the framework that now exists. Paul has talked about building a better database/preference-based system, but that hasn't come to pass yet. The interim solution is to have multiple copies of the same image with different file names. So, if you have one book icon but several book item types, you just copy and rename the file for each item type. Physical Description on Search Results Page

I've just started configuring Koha to use in our library, and I'm heavily using Nelsonville as a reference point. I noticed that the physical description does not display correctly on the search results page, and I see Nelsonville has the same problem. I corrected this by editing opac-searchresults.tmpl. Under "Actual Search Results", change the line  :  to   and it should display correctly. I also had to remove the colon and the semicolon in the next line as well. Wednesday, June 15, 2005 19:33 CDT Hi, Rachel, Thanks for the answer back. :-) I must apologise as I realise that the way I expressed myself confused what I was trying to get at: DSA has and would like to have more than the one book ItemType you described. For example, to date, I have created icons for 8 out of 14 provisional base genre categories for Fiction (as defined locally), and for 18 of the 27 GMDs given in List 2 of AACR2R 1.1.C1. I realise that this would be silly for libraries like HLT and NPL, which would likely not have/allow many of these materials for borrowing, but school libraries often do (e.g. activity cards, charts, dioramas, filmstrips, flash cards, maps, microscope slides, models, slides, transparencies, and various forms of realia: I had all of these in the Professional collection in the last highschool library I managed). There is also the desire to use Koha for equipment management, which brings in a whole other set of ItemTypes and associated icons. Obviously, though, I wouldn't want to have so many ItemTypes, as most would end up with the same characteristics, since the things one doesn't want the students to be able to borrow would all have the same borrowing periods for staff. What I meant to ask Stephen and all the rest of you cognescenti was if it were praticable to leave ItemType as it was but somehow have another MARC (sub)field instruct which icon to display, an IconType if you will, that would allow for a greater variety in icons than Book/Non-Book, Fiction/Non-Fiction as there is some benefit in terms of generating interest in the library gained through jazzing up the OPAC a bit. And to be fair and properly grateful, I freely acknowledge that I have based the genre icons I have been creating on Stephen's very neat Western, Sci Fi and Mystery exempla. Thanks, Stephen! Since Chris Jones has moved on to greener pastures and is not currently available, I need some direction as to what part of the code we would need to look at to make this kind of a change. We have just one "book" icon, and all the itemtypes that someone would think of as books use the same icon. 'You have no items on issue'

Good day! The program is responding very well to all tests I've run. That said, I do get one message that (I assume) should say something different. When I sign books out to a patron, and then log on the opac site as that patron, I get a message that says "You have no items on issue." In the intranet site, the issued items are listed, so the value is indeed stored in mysql. I assume that the message should list the books that are currently on issue. Is my assumption correct?
