newbie questions

Hi, I'm just looking at Koha potentially for a library here in our school. Congratulations to all involved and thanks for releasing it under the GPL. I have installed it and am tinkering about. It's on a 400MHz P2 w 128MB RAM running Debian GNU/Linux (sarge) in a MySQL database and I installed the sample data from sampledata-1.2.gz. The sampledata didn't insert entirely perfectly but it seems reasonable for testing. I was wondering about a few things. 1. The major book data seems to be in one table, including authors. I would instinctively have separated the authors into a separate table. Is this just a decision to favour simplicity over normalisation or am I missing something? 2. There are no indexes on the biblio table. Is this deliberate, did I lose something in installation or are we expected to add our own afterward? 3. The doc recommends not using mod_perl. Is this just because it's not tested or is there a more specific reason? I would imagine adding 4. It seems rather slow. Each search request is taking 3-5 seconds. The machine is running my desktop apps but isn't terribly stressed. I've tried using mod_perl and adding indexes but I get the impression that the time is mainly being spent within the perl code itself. Is this normal performance or have i done something wrong? Many thanks again for providing this system under the GPL. Hopefully it will save us a lot of time and effort. Error in MARC check!!!

Hi I'm using Koha2.2.2b, in the parameters module suddendly i saw one msg in MARC check ...it shows a mistake that can BREAK Koha's database! when i clicked : item fields: ALL items fields MUST : # be mapped to the same tag, # and they must all be in the 10 (items) tab i somehow tried to modify the tag structure .. but tat error was not going...Someone suggest me a idea so tat it would be a great help to u... OpenSource Software at IFLA 2005

I am working at the Oslo Public Library, the host public library for the IFLA conference in Oslo. http://www.ifla.org/IV/ifla71/ I am giving a presentation on August 17th on the use of Open Source software at our library, mostly Linux and OpenOffice. We are not (as yet) a Koha library, but I would like to refer to Koha in my presentation. This is an excellent opportunity to make KOHA more visible to library leaders from around the world. Are any of the meeting attendees also coming to IFLA in Oslo - or do they have any institutional representatives attending? If enough people are attending, it might be an idea to try to arrange an 'installfest' for koha during IFLA. Usually the IFLA attendees are administrators, so maybe a demo is enough. Any suggestions? Saludos desde la cálida Honduras, La Fundación RIECKEN implementa bibliotecas comunitarias en comunidades rurales en Honduras. Hasta la fecha tenemos 15 bibliotecas funcionando y a finales de año contaremos con otras 20. Nuestra preocupación no sólo es contar con un sistema gestor de bibliotecas sino también que el mismo cuente con un fuerte módulo de adquisiciones. Para tal fin hemos visualizado varias alternativas y entre ellas y la que más me parece viable es KOHA en su versión en castellano. Sin embargo tengo varias dudas las cuales me gustaría solventar. 1. La base de datos de KOHA están en formato MARC. ¿Se pueden añadir otros campos no contemplados en dicho formato?.Por ejemplo, pensando en el inventario de bodega de la colección tenemos un campo de distribución del material, origen de la adquisición... entre otros. 2. Sé que KOHA está hecho para Linux pero, ¿existe una versión de KOHA en castellano para Windows? En Honduras y creo que en Centroamérica ningún centro se ha planteado implementar este tipo de software. Nosotros estamos al inicio de implementar uno y deseamos conocer más a fondo las bondades de este universo de KOHA. Existen nuevas versiones que hace Poul Poulain, cada actualización y nueva versión sale en un promedio de 4 meses con nuevas modificaciones y aportes. He coordinado juntamente con Emiliano y estoy al tanto de los avances que tienen los Argentinos, tuve la suerte de conocerlo a Emiliano Marmonti de la UNLP de Argentina, y compartimos algunas experiencias en cuanto a los requerimientos que se tiene en Latinoamérica, uno de los aportes que mayor beneficio esta dando aquí en Bolivia es el modulo de importación, se catalogan los registros usando el IsisMarc del mismo que Emiliano es coautor de este desarrollo. El modulo de catalogación del Koha aun le encuentro muchas debilidades para los requerimientos de nuestros bibliotecarios. Si concertáramos en avanzar de manera coordinada en la traducción y al mismo tiempo avanzando paralelamente al avance de Poul Poulain y fortificando al sistema a nivel Latinoamérica creo que se avanzaría más. Me tope con la traducción que Hizo José de Chile, lo hizo en Front Pages el cual es un buen intento de conseguir la traducción del sistema, pero andamos con las traducciones muy separadas. Otro aspecto que se tiene que coordinar es elaborar un RoadMap y determinar los módulos de prioridad para Latinoamérica. Abrazos y saludos y felicitaciones por los avances que me indicas. Atte. How to search for items on loan?

Hi, it would be helpful if kohaadmin could search for the items currently on loan. Not just their overall number (as is possible with Reports), but their complete list, with the possibility to identify the loaner. I can't see an appropriate field in /cgi-bin/koha/search.marc/search.pl, so I tried to add a link in the Koha-MARC table of correspondences, namely 952z (not existing) to items.issues. Querying mysql interactively, select * from items where (items.issues > 0); actually lists all the items currently on loan, whereas querying Koha through search.pl with and (0 952z >= '0') returns the empty set. Is there any more straightforward way that I am not considering? (Do I need to hack search.pl and add my own query?) Thank you for your suggestions.
