re transferring data from a Windows platform to a linux platform

PRoblem: transferring data from a Windows platform to a linux platform; At present we are using a Windows platform with Koha 2.2.9. wea re in the process of going to Linux so we can take advantage of Koha 3.0.0. Will we be able to trransfer data across the different platforms? Thanks Carmel Young

Error adding patron

Hello, When trying to add a patron, i get an error screen which reads like... can't find an executable sendmail at /usr/share/koha/lib/C4/Letters.pm line 21 and so on. i was assuming i'd just use postfix in place of sendmail, but it looks like this module needs sendmail and only sendmail. Is that right? The error disappears when i install sendmail. i wanted to think twice before installing sendmail on my internet server, because of its known vulnerabilities. Some more information: this error appears irrespective of whether i have "AutoEmailOpacUser" preference turned on.. Thanks and regards, krishnan mani Pune, India Unlimited freedom, unlimited storage. Invoice Numbers in Koha 3.01.00.002

Dear All, I am preparing to import our holdings into the recently set up Koha system. Since we used to have a special category for "invoice number" in each of our item records, I wonder if there is an equivalent in Koha. I saw that you can enter an invoice number when receiving a shipment, but this number does not appear again in the "Receive items from" menu, where the item is added to the catalog, or after that in the Koha "edit items" menu. Is the invoice number linked in some hidden subfield to the (952?) item record and could it be made visible and searchable? Thanks a lot for your help. Best regards, Marc

Independent branches vs. singleBranchMode

Hello, i eventually plan to use my Koha installation for more than one "independent" library. So i set IndependentBranches preference (under System > Admin) to On. (especially, since the manual says that you set this upfront and not change it later) However, for the moment, i have just one library, and don't want to confuse members. So i also set singleBranchMode (under System > Admin) to On. i am presuming that the latter is just a 'mode'. In other words, i can switch singleBranchMode off later when i want to work with multiple branches/libraries without having to do anything else, and i can just continue to use Koha, now with branch selection turned on. questions concerning patron logins to OPAC

1) If i do not provide an OPAC login when adding a patron, i am assuming they cannot login. Please view this question from the point of view: there is no security hole allowing someone to "login AS the patron" 2) Is there a way to disable a patron login to OPAC at any time? What happens if i edit the patron record and clear out the login name? 3) Is there a way for me to add a patron and defer creating their login till later? 4) Anytime i edit the OPAC login, does the e-mail notice with the login and password information get sent automatically? Or is there a way i can trigger them manually? At our library, we will snail-mail a membership card and wait for patrons to acknowledge they received them and want an OPAC login before we create one for them. Configuration question

Similar to the Maryland library, we are automating our library (yes, no more card catalog!) and will be entering all our materials in the end of October and hoping to go live sometime in early '09. I also hope not to be a pest, we are trying to set up our cataloging parameters right now and truthfully although I took cataloging in library school I feel like my MARC knowledge and technology knowledge are being stretched a bit too much. I guess my basic question is...how much of this do I need to fiddle with or can I mostly leave things as they are. I tweaked the authorized values a bit...I defined our classification sources...but most of the other categories left me scratching my head. We don't plan on creating too many of our records, but of course we will need to do some of that especially for our old books, town records, and such. If all that mapping and framework stuff is crucial would someone let me know so I can dust off my cataloging books and try to make sense of it...I was hoping we could use the default framework for what we needed. Hi all, I'm from Howard County Library, Maryland and am new to the list. My library is scheduled to go live with Koha in mid-December and I have lots of questions related to setup and understanding how the software works in a real environment in order to make wise decisions about parameters and system preferences. I hope this is the right forum for this type of inquiry and that I won't become too much of a pest, but your combined wisdom will be invaluable, I'm sure. I'm currently working on Circulation and Fines Rules. At the bottom of the page in Koha it says: /For this library, you can specify the maximum number of loans that a patron of a given category can make, regardless of the item type. /The column to enter number of loans is labeled Total Current Checkouts Allowed. Does this mean: * Number of items checked out during this checkout session only? * Total number of items the patron can have checked out at one time? In our current system we have doubled the single checkout session figure so the patron isn't stopped at checkout if s/he returns items upon entering the library that have not yet been checked in. Hello, i am wondering if there are good sources of MARC records for books in Hindi, Marathi, and other Indian regional languages. i have a fair number of these that i need to catalog in Koha and any assistance is appreciated.
