Upgrading Koha 3.x
by Byron Peterson 26 Sep '08

26 Sep '08

I have Koha Installed on Mac OS X Server 10.5.5 using MySQL 5.0.45. The version of Koha I have installed (from `systempreferences` table in the DB) is 3.0000104. I would like to update to the latest version of 3.x. I used 'git' to download the latest version then I ran "perl Makefile.PL --prev-install-log {path to install log file} I then run 'make' and 'make upgrade'. Now when I go to the intranet site (http://myhost.com:8080/) I get the following URL and page content: URL: http://dev.cues-koha.org:8080/cgi-bin/koha/installer/install.pl Web Installer › Step 3 Now we're ready to create the database tables and fill them with some default data. Click Next to continue When I click the 'Next >>' button, I get this URL and page content: URL: http://dev.cues-koha.org:8080/cgi-bin/koha/installer/install.pl?step=3&op=i… Web Installer › Step 3 The following error occurred while importing the database structure: ERROR 1050 (42S01) at line 964: Table 'hold_fill_targets' already exists Please contact your system administrator I bad side affect of this is that all the data in the database is now gone. I restored my data and version (3.0000104) from my backup, but I would really like to get updated to the latest version. (NOTE: I did this update on a dev server, not a production server). Can someone please explain to me what I am doing wrong, or if it is a bug, when will it be fixed? Are there any workaround? Koha 3.0-RC1 installation experience and issues
by Emrys Minnig 26 Sep '08

26 Sep '08

Hello all! I've just installed Koha 3.0-RC1 for use in the library at the secondary school where I work and wanted to share my experiences as well as highlight some problems. I am using a dedicated server running Debian Etch (eventually to be virtualised onto a bigger server) with the No_Zebra option and using the MARC21 format. I migrated the majority of the records from our old 'Alice' system using Alice's 'Export to UKMARC with item information' option and then converting the records to a MARC21-flavour including Koha's 952 field using MarcEdit. I then successfully imported the biblios and items using the 'Stage MARC records' tool on Koha's web interface. I also added a good quantity of additional records from the National Library of Scotland through the Z39.50 client. My final step will be to configure LDAP authentication and import patron information from the school's staff/student database. I've run across a few problems. I'm not sure if these issues have been addressed in the newest Koha release as I have not yet gotten around to updating, but I thought I'd report them nonetheless and see if others have had similar experiences. 1) The dependency installation order in the INSTALL_DEBIAN file does not seem to be correct. Many of the packages listed first depend on packages to be installed later. 2) Staged MARC imports don't seem to properly fill in Koha's 952y (item type) field. (I tested this extensively.) Thus type-limited searches do not return records added in this manner. 3) When using Firefox3 and doing large quantities of single MARC imports using the Z39.50 client, browser speed eventually slows to a crawl, especially whenever the 'Save' button on the 'Add MARC record' page is clicked. Speed returns to normal when Firefox's 'Clear Private Data' tool is used. 4) If IE7 is used for the staff interface (not recommended), every time the 'Save' button on the 'Add MARC Record' page is clicked, two biblios are created without throwing the 'Duplicate record suspected' dialogue. 5) After deleting biblios, occasionally search is broken, yielding a 'Can't call method "as_usmarc" on an undefined value' error. rebuild_nozebra.pl must then be run to fix it. 6) After getting a long list of search results and sorting them via the 'sort' menu, progressing through the pages of results often throws a 'Can't call method "as_usmarc" on an undefined value' error (even after rebuild_nozebra.pl script is run). 7) Subtype limits in 'Advanced search' do not work. I understand that using the Zebra option will fix this, but is there any other way? For the record though, this is a great Koha release. Kudos to all those involved! Koha is far superior to the commercial ILS's that I've used. One thought... having discovered MarcEdit's ability to do batch Z39.50 MARC imports, I fantasised about how nice it would be if Koha had a similar utility... Cheers! Patron receipt printers
by Susan Bennett 26 Sep '08

26 Sep '08

Hi Everybody, We are looking at replacing the receipt printers in our libraries. The current ones are old enough that we can not get them to print from Mozilla Firefox - no drivers available. Can anyone recommend a small slip printer for use at the circ desks? Also if you've know of printers we should steer clear of I'd like to hear from you. Feel free to contact me off list at susan.bennett(a)geaugalibrary.info Thank You! About adding content
by Krishnan Mani 26 Sep '08

26 Sep '08

Hello, Koha has the couple of system preferences: OpacMainUserBlock: to insert content into the body of the OPAC "home" page OpacNav: to insert content into the sidebar (usually links) I want to add some static content (a few .html pages) and links to the same from the sidebar, such that these are displayed in the same place as OpacMainUserBlock without navigating away from the OPAC screen What's the recommended way to do this? i understand that at the very least, i will have to create and house the static content inside DocumentRoot for Koha. For the moment, i am using a single locale, so i am not worried about making sure that this content will be picked up regardless of template and locale chosen from the SystemPreferences. PARAMETERS
by Mbangi Mlandeli Douglas 26 Sep '08

26 Sep '08

We have installed Koha 2.2.9 and are trying to set up our parameters such that the Catalogue -> Add Biblio screen will only display the fields/subfields that we use. We have tried to delete those we don't want using Parameters -> Biblio framework (MARC structure) but when we get back to the Add Biblio screen, it still displays all the fields and subfields that we do not want and this is too cumbersome for data entry. Please assist us in this regard. Regards, Douglas

Re: [Koha] MIGRATING A CDS/ISIS BASED SYSTEM TO KOHA
by Adalid Ortiz 26 Sep '08

26 Sep '08

Maybe Marcedit http://oregonstate.edu/~reeset/marcedit/html/index.php could help you. It have a plugin/module for CDS/ISIS databases. The best way to migrate and convert ISIS datases to MARC/UTF-8 is tab or coma delimited and the use MARCedit. Saludos.

daemon command in koha-zebra-ctl.sh
by Gomez, Bernardo 25 Sep '08

25 Sep '08

in the process of installing koha3.0 I tried to set up zebra processes as daemons. when I run the command sudo /usr/share/koha/bin/koha-zebra-ctl.sh start ubuntu says that "daemon": command not found. am quoting INSTALL.debian: <<Option 2: run the Zebra processes as daemons, and add to startup process: Note that references to $SCRIPT_DIR refer to the directory where Koha's command-line scripts are installed, e.g., /usr/share/koha/bin. Zebra Server: $ sudo ln -s ${SCRIPT_DIR}/koha-zebra-ctl.sh /etc/init.d/koha-zebra-daemon (Note: ${SCRIPT_DIR} is /usr/share/koha/bin/ by default in a standard install) $ sudo update-rc.d koha-zebra-daemon defaults >> my question is: is "daemon" a linux command or a koha command, and where can I find it? thank you. bernardo gomez ---------------------- Emory University- IT Atlanta GA 30322 bgomez(a)emory.edu 404-727-4948 This e-mail message (including any attachments) is for the sole use of the intended recipient(s) and may contain confidential and privileged information.
