Delhi Public Library Catalogue Goes Live with Koha 3.0
by Delhi Public Library 06 Oct '08

06 Oct '08

hi all Delhi Public Library catalogue is going live on 2nd October with Koha 3.0, the consortia-quality open-source library management software. Users from across the world and nearly 45000 DPL members can now access the most current catalogue of *Delhi Public Library system *on its website at * http://www.dpl.gov.in* or *http://59.176.17.111* DPL is very proud to be the first library in India to implement the latest version of Koha 3.0. DPL at present has 1500000 (15 lakh) books in its holdings spread across its network of zonal and branch libraries spread all over Delhi. Retro-conversion of such a massive collection is a huge and time consuming task. Hence DPL has planned to make implement koha in phases. To begin with the online catalogue of *current acquisitions* *& books received under the Delivery of Books Act from 2007 *and about 70,000 D.B.Act book's record available in cds/isis and conversion from cds/isis to MARC21 is already under way. Retro-conversion of old catalogue records is going to start soon and in the near future the entire catalogue will be made available online. This is an important facet of DPL's modernization programme which was kick-started early this year. Other major initiatives are recently introduced *Internet access service*, a totally *revamped and refurbished childrens'* section. These new services are now available in the three libraries situated at Sarojini Nagar, S P Mukherjee Marg in Old Delhi and Patel Nagar. Soon DPL is going to use KOHA for computerizing circulation of DVDs in its three zonal libraries (Central Library, Sarojini Nagar and Patel Nagar). Response from public to these new services has been overwhelming and these will be introduced in other libraries as well in a phased manner. Delhi Public Library is an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Culture and governed by Delhi Library Board, started as a UNESCO project in the year 1951 by the Govt. of India. Delhi Public Library system includes a network of Zonal Libraries, Branches & Sub-branches Libraries, R.C.Libraries, Community Libraries, Deposit Stations, Mobile Library, Braille library, etc. spread all over Delhi. DPL provides free services to Delhi citizens. Its large book stock includes books in Hindi, English, Urdu, Punjabi & other Indian Languages, and almost all subjects are represented in its collection. The Delhi Public Library is also one of the four recipient libraries under the provision of Delivery of Books & Newspaper (Public Libraries) Act 1954 and busiest public library in Southeast Asia. *For further information in this regard pl. contact:* *Director* *Delhi Public Library* *S.P.Mukherjee Marg, Delhi-6* *Ph:23958747, 23991297* *Email:dpl@dpl.gov.in <Email%3Adpl(a)dpl.gov.in>, delhipubliclibrary(a)gmail.com *

Re: [Koha] utf-8 and Z39.50 and record import, international, chars not being shown properly?

Hi, Have you made sure your whole system has been set to UTF-8 as default (OS and Mysql!) before you install koha? I am working with lots of east asian records (and maybe apart from the subfields in the #952 item tag), it seems to work fine with the recent koha version. Best regards, Marc

For me, the problem was incorrect data display in the Z39.50 window and incorrect import into KOHA.

utf-8 and Z39.50 and record import, international chars not being shown properly?
by H.S. 04 Oct '08

Hello, I am using a recent snapshot of Koha 3.0. When I try to search for a record which probably has a language than English in it, it appears that I am not able to get that language in the Z39.50 dialog. Take ISBN 96912064 for example. If I search for this in COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY [clio-db.cc.columbia.edu] I get: Title: Paänjåabåi Yåunåiwarasiòtåi Fåarasåi-Paänjåabåi kosha = And the MARC record as: Koha -- Cataloging: MARC Import LDR 01550mam a2200385 a 4500 001 2160993 005 20030429123500.0 008 970424s1996 ii d s000 0 pano 010 _a 96912064 020 _a8173802130 025 _aI-Pan-96-912064; 07 035 _a(OCoLC)ocm36807043 035 _a(OCoLC)ocm36807043 035 _9ANM8035CU 040 _aDLC _cDLC 041 0 _apanper 042 _alcode 050 00 _aPK2631 _b.P346 1996 245 00 _aPaänjåabåi Yåunåiwarasiòtåi Fåarasåi-Paänjåabåi kosha = _bPunjabi University Persian-Punjabi dictionary = Panjåabåi Yåunåivarsitåi Fåarsåi-Panjåabåi lughat / _csaçnkalanakartåa Jåita Siçngha Såitala ; saòmshodhaka Gulawanta Siçngha ; mukkha sampåadaka Råajindara Siçngha Låambåa. 246 31 _aPunjabi University Persian-Punjabi dictionary 246 31 _aPanjåabåi Yåunåivarasitåi Fåarsåi-Panjåabåi lughat 246 30 _aFåarasåi-Paänjåabåi kosha 246 30 _aPersian-Punjabi dictionary 246 30 _aFåarsåi-Panjåabåi lughat 260 _aPaòtiåalåa : _bPabalikeshana Biåuro, Paänjåabåi Yåunåiwarasiòtåi, _c1996. 300 _a1017 p. ; _c22 cm. 546 _aPanjabi and Persian. 500 _aIncludes index. 650 0 _aPersian language _vDictionaries _xPanjabi. 650 0 _aPanjabi language _vDictionaries _xPersian. 700 1 _aSåitala, Jåita Siçngha, _d1911- 700 0 _aGulawanta Siçngha. 700 1 _aLåambåa, Råajindara Siçngha. 710 2 _aPunjabi University. _bPublication Bureau. 900 _aAUTH Are those funny characters supposed to appear as they do above? If the above somehow show something different, I have posted the screen shots here: http://picasaweb.google.ca/hs.samix/Screenshots# BTW, I have the UTF-8 enabled in apache2, it also enabled for all users on the computer on which Koha is installed. Thanks.

BTW, I can see web pages in different languages fine in Firefox. It is only this Z39.50 window that is the problem.

I solved a similar problem with latin characters (ñ,í,ó, etc.) forcing Firefox to use UTF-8 character encondig. Then Z39.50 import/display correctly into KOha. saludos.

migrating Koha to a new computer
by H.S. 03 Oct '08

03 Oct '08

Hello, I recently helped a local community center to setup their library management system using Koha. Now a new server is being bought and Koha is to moved to that spanking new machine. So, what is the best way to migrate the library data to the new machine? What I am guessing is: 1. Install the latest version of Koha in the new machine. 2. Create the Mysql users 3. Export the library database from the old machine (not sure how exactly) 4. Import that in the new machine. Is the the above workable? In any case, I would probably need instructions in more detail on how go about doing this. A pre-existing web page on this topic would also be great. Regards.
