Opac indexing
by Scott Kushner 21 Nov '08

When I import marc records I can search them in Cataloging but not in Opac. What am I missing here? Do I have to run some procs or scripts or something? Can't find any documentation on this. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Scott Kushner Information Technologies Middletown Public Library

Add biblio problem from Z3950 search on 2.2.9
by ppope＠iprimus.com.au 20 Nov '08

20 Nov '08

Has anyone managed to get the "Add Biblio and Go to Items" function working on 2.2.9 after a Z3950 search? I have finally managed to get the Z3950 search to return data and populate the marc fields when I import a book but when I click the button to add biblio and go to items, I get an internal server error. The koha error log entry is below. If anyone has this working, would you mind sharing your Biblio.pm and addbiblio.pl scripts with me so I can compare to mine? Re: [Koha] Simple manual cataloguing

Actually, I have two different frameworks to choose from when entering records. I have the default which I've edited to reflect OCLC standards and what I need for my local catalog. I also have a Brief Input framework with just a few fields for the non-catalog staff to enter brief records so we at least know titles in the library. Both seem to work just fine and I can switch records back and forth between the frameworks. But I'm using 2.2.9 still. Does this ability to have multiple frameworks change in 3.0? Thanx. Fresh Koha 3.0 install -- z39.50 search errors
by Дмитрий Журавлев 20 Nov '08

20 Nov '08

Good day, everybody. I have several questions about my Koha 3.0 fresh installation. I have installed Koha 3 (stable) on ubuntu 8.04 using debian etch installation manual. Koha is running now, but I have some problems: 1) On Release notes page (http://koha.org/about-koha/news/nr1218407616.html) there is written that Koha is fully translated to many languages including Russian (I reside in Moscow, Russia). But it is partially translated. Is it a mistake? 2) Koha 3.0 documentation says: "By default Koha comes with a connection to the Library of Congress catalog" (Look here: http://sites.google.com/a/liblime.com/koha-manual/Home/Table-of-Contents/ad…) But when I loaded Z39.50 configuration page for the first time -- it was blank. No Z39.50 servers are added by default during installation. Is it a bug? 3) I added new Z39.50 server for searching (the server of Library of Congress -- z3950.loc.org) but searching returns nothing saying that nothing was found or gives away with an error: >The following fatal error has occurred: >substr outside of string at /usr/share/koha/lib/C4/Charset.pm line 241. Well, which search engine does Koha 3.0 use? I've read about z3950daemon: >IMPORTANT: The z3950search will NOT work until your system >administrator has activated the z3950 client daemon on your server. The >daemon is in KohaDirectory/script/z3950daemon. It should be added to >rc.d to be launched during server boot. but there is no script/ directory in /usr/share/koha/ and in whole subtree! How can I fix Z39.50 search? Thanks.

Hello. In testing Koha 3.0 alpha, I have a user who has checked out a book which is now overdue by 3 weeks. According to the overdue/fine rules, he should be getting charged $0.25/day in overdue fines, but when he logs into his account it shows the overdue book in red but displays "No" in the fines column *****************************************************************************>The information contained in this communication is confidential and > may be legally privileged. Printing barcode and spine labels
by Irene Sachs 18 Nov '08

18 Nov '08

Dear List We are using Koha 3 and are trying to print barcode labels. After following the instructions in the manual we are able to create labels and show them in PDF format. However, the labels are incomplete. They show all specified details including the title, call number and barcode number but do not actually create the barcode itself. We have tried specifying all available barcode types from the drop down box with the same result. Can anybody help please? Also how do you specify when you want a spine label. Again after reading the manual I can't find any way to create a label that does not include a barcode type. Many thanks _________________________________________________________________ Time for change? Something to chew on - Subject Conspectus
by BWS Johnson 18 Nov '08

18 Nov '08

Salvete! As far as I can tell, this isn't being considered now for future inclusion. While there are improvements slated for reports, I don't think there's an overhaul planned that would bring things up to the level of fine detail that would be useful for the purpose of serving as, or going a long way towards a conspectus. RDA seems to have ducked the issue, but with the rules just now kind of sort of out http://www.rdaonline.org/constituencyreview/ it seems like they've temporarily ducked the subject stickiness. (I skimmed, it's early yet!) My mind goes back to the nifty feature in the Extensible Catalogue that essentially brute forced authority files. It would be neat to have a similar feature to operate on subjects where possible. The subroutine could check a given record, see if it were missing a Dewey, an LC, or a SuDoc number, then attempt to pull the missing field from the world at large. This could then go into a queue where a cataloguer could check what the computer was doing and confirm or deny changes. It's obviously more complex than the authority check that the XC lads are on to, but man would it be worthwhile. Having this coupled with a granular subject based circulation report would allow for ridiculously high quality collection development. Following my closing is a letter that went across the GOVDOC listserv from someone else about one of the current problems in only having things indexed under one subject heading, which was what got me rethinking this. Cheers, Brooke I'm going to reply to the list because I am also interested in this question. Our library has tried unsuccessfully to do this kind of analysis. Most of our current collection analysis depends on Dewey or LC call numbers. We map the Dewey and LC numbers to specific subject categories and then run a count of the number of items held by each library in our consortium based on that call number range. You can see the results at http://www.alc.org/acdc/INDEX.HTML The problem is we could never map Sudoc with fine enough accuracy to the Dewey or LC classification system, so Sudoc numbers are NOT included in our analysis, to my intense regret. There was some discussion a while back on govdoc-l about a crosswalk between Sudoc and Dewey/LC, but I don't recall that anyone had a ready made solution. Many of the oclc records for documents have LC numbers associated with them. It may be possible to include some govdocs by using the associated LC number contained in the bib. record. This would pick up some documents but not all. I asked Marcive once about how many GPO records came with an LC class number. They said it was a very small percentage. While attempting to use the predetermined LC class might be be better than nothing, but it still seems like a less than desirable solution. I would be interested in what others are doing.
