Latin1 vs. Unicode (UTF-8)
by Harris, Gary, DCA 17 Mar '09

17 Mar '09

Greetings- Opinions please. MARC records we plan to load into our Koha database are encoded in the MARC-8 format. This document tells us to use UTF-8 encoded records. http://wiki.koha.org/doku.php?do=show&id=encodingscratchpad (nice work, Josh, but we have test loaded some records in MARC-8 that seem to work fine, but we respect your knowledge, so now we are questioning ourselves as we move closer to a production environment) We have read many items on this issue. Any additional opinions on what is the correct thing to do will be appreciated. It is my intention to leave this question open-ended in hopes of getting several points of view from the Koha community. Thanks. Gary +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Gary L. Harris, M.L.S. Firefox on Windows XP and Koha
by Beda Szukics 17 Mar '09

Hello all I'd like to use Firefox (3.0.7) on WindowXP to work with Koha. Most of the things do all right. But adding MARC-Records the Firefox takes about half a minute to save the record (and the harddisk is quite busy). Why is that so? I tried Safary and Google Chrome: those two don't show this behaviour. Also using Firefox with Linux (Ubuntu). Beda

Cataloguing articles within serials
by Nelson Fredsell 17 Mar '09

17 Mar '09

Dear all, 1) We would like to catalogue individual articles/chapters within some of our serials/journals/periodicals. I understand that using MARC 5xx or 6xx is a preferred method. I've been unable to find examples of this on the liblime demos thus far, and would like to see how this works both from an administrator's standpoint and from a patron's. 2) After seeing an article, I'd also love to be able to Search for this article to see whether I could find it in the catalogue, alongside books. 3) I'd like for patron searches to include books, serials and articles within serials, *within a single search of keyword, subject and title*. I'd perhaps like this to be the default search, rather than an Advanced Search. Is Koha configurable in this way (without lots and lots of effort)? Could anyone point me to an example or two, especially relating to point 1? (We're a small NGO/non-profit in the field of independent education.) Thanks! Item Types, Collection Codes and Other Mysteries : a guide for newbies.
by Joann Ransom 17 Mar '09

17 Mar '09

This is my understanding of the use of Item Types and CCodes based on the emails and list discussion. If my understanding is wrong - please correct it. If I have it clear then I think this would be useful for the Koha 3.0 Manual (certainly would have helped me!) Would love someone to please add in the marc fields where you would enter the information which will display in these fields(are we heading into mapping territory now?) BIBLIO LEVEL INFORMATION Search results display Biblio level info; which can include: * Format (book, DVD, video cassette) * Audience (children, young adult, adult) * Content (bibliography) * Material Type (using XLST search will display wee icons.) ITEM LEVEL INFORMATION The holdings table displays Item level info, which can include: * Item Types * CCodes * Shelving Location * Call Number ADVANCED SEARCH The Advanced Search interface displays either Item Types (with their associated icons) OR Collection Codes (with their associated icons). You cannot set both as Advanced Search options, although there is general agreement that this would be a cool enhancement. NOTES ON ITEM TYPES *set circulation policy * you must have item types * you don't have to have CCodes * can be used to define collections * can be OPAC advanced search points NOTES ON CCODESs * have no relationship to circulation policy * any number of CCodes can have the same the Item Type * are optional * are used to define collections * can be OPAC advanced search points NOTES ON CALL NUMBER Shows an items shelf position, can include alpha and numeric characters. NOTES ON SHELVING LOCATION Denotes a physical location ie a floor or building. (Not sure if this displays in OPAC or not.) GENERAL RULE OF THUMB *If you don't have to have CCodes to distinguish between Item Types and Collection Codes, then don't -- just use Item Types.* An example of when you would need CCodes, is where you have a policy which says borrowers may have no more than 10 AV items on loan at a time, but they may be taken from arange of different collections. So Item Type is set as AV and a bunch of CCodes are created: DVD, JDVD, Video, JVideo, CDROM, Audio Book on Tape, Teen Audio Book on CD, etc. A borrow a total of 10 AV materials from any of the CCodes related to Item Type=AV.

Koha 3.0 : item types or CCodes (again - sorry ..)

In response to Joe's question. "A biblio with N items can map to N different itype (and N different ccode values). How would you pick which one(s) you want on the results page?" I understand the issue with large libraries/consortia, and I am not a developer or programmer, but I think the following suggestion could still work...? My suggestion is a system preference that lets the library choose what criteria (if any) will pull icons that show up on the OPAC search results page. (with at least 4 options) - 1) icons based on ccodes 2) icons based on item types 3) icons based on info in the MARC record - format, audience, etc. 4) no icons at all. 1) The ccode icon would be pulled from the 1st item under the bib record and displayed on the search results page. My understanding was that in KOHA 2, libraries could set up ccode icons which would show up on the search results screen? If this is true, I thought that there might be quite a few libraries who were disappointed when KOHA 3 removed these icons from the search results page. These folks might choose to base their search results icons on ccodes. 2) The item type icon would be pulled from the 1st item under the bib record and displayed on the search results page. Libraries with detailed item types might choose to display icons based on item type. I think this is the option my library might choose. 3) and 4) Large libraries/consortia with multiple ccodes and item types for 1 bib record, could choose to base their icons on info in their MARC records, or have no icons at all. Having icons on the search results page is really really helpful when you are searching and want to know at a glance whether you are looking at a book on cd, dvd, book on cassette, video etc. A new system preference like this could allow libraries both large and small to display icons based on criteria of their own choosing or on their MARC records. I'm very interested if folks still see problems with this suggestion, maybe I am misunderstanding the issues. I'm trying to figure out a way for libraries with less than perfect MARC records to have good icons which can differentiate between formats - for example btw a book on cd and a book on cassette. FRBR & Koha?
by savitra sirohi 16 Mar '09

16 Mar '09

Folks, We might be interested in developing better FRBR capabilities on Koha. This will help us market Koha better here in India. I see some posts on this topic from a while back, nothing recent. http://listes.koha-fr.org/pipermail/koha-devel/2005-October/005536.html http://library-matters.blogspot.com/2008/12/ranganathans-5-laws-and-frbr.ht… I am aware that Koha can use webservices like xISBN. Is anybody working on FRBR? I will appreciate input from users and developers on how to move forward on this. Thanks, Savitra Sirohi MD, Nucsoft OSS Labs http://www.osslabs.biz
