Re: [Koha] Cataloguing articles within serials
Thank you, Joy, for the detailed explanation. A responding question I put to VerĂ³nica Lencinas in Argentina is whether I would enter both a serial and its articles as main items. To try and be clear, a serial with 10 articles would then result in 11 main entries in the ILS. Would this confuse patrons? However, I suspect it would be preferable to do it this way as opposed to 1 main item with 10 entries in TOC 505 repeatable fields so that both Keyword *and* Subject fields could be used for an article, and therefore more searchable by patrons. Take care, Nelson Centre for Creative Education Cape Town, South Africa www.cfce.org.za

Nelson-
I've done this at least once for a faculty article in a journal to which we don't subscribe. To view that record, go here: http://fsc.kohalibrary.com/cgi-bin/koha/opac- detail.pl?biblionumber=140301
You can view the MARC to see how exactly I formatted it. I received some help from other OCLC libraries building the bib, so I'm pretty confident that it follows the "rules." While your original post didn't exactly say if you wanted the article as the main entry (as opposed to the journal), this example show how you can make the article the main entry.
If you are looking to keep the original item (the book, journal, whatever) that the article is in as the main entry, than the 505 field (Table of Contents) would be the place to put it. I've found that the unformatted table of contents field (505 0_) works a little bit better with the indexing of Koha. We're a hosted system, though, so that might make a difference. For an example of how that looks, go here: http://fsc.kohalibrary.com/cgi-bin/koha/opac- detail.pl?biblionumber=134277. This has an unformatted contents note in the "Description" tab. That means it's not putting the chapter titles and authors into any index, but they are all still accessible through keyword searching. You can also see the MARC for this record as well.
I hope this helps.
