Re: [Koha] Koha support by BSZ

I would be very interested in a US Kohacon, just about any time of the year would be OK with me, although May 2010 looks potentially busy at the moment. At a US or regional/US Koha conference I'd like to see both a library user's track and a hackfest (with an ack to Paul's "worldwide" comment). We (my tech assistant and I) have wanted to get around to looking at the Koha code to get involved with the project, but have been too busy with other sysadmin stuff to really get into it. It would be really great if a real coder could spend an hour or two and get us started--like an introductory tutorial to Koha programming (not writing Perl per se, we have slips of paper saying we should know how to figure it out). If the location will be outside driving distance from Kansas City (meaning we have to fly), then a two or three day conference would be best to justify the fixed costs. I would also like to make it to NZ too, and late in the year would be best for that. That would be on my dime also, but hey, Chris needs the bacon so it will be a supply mission. The thinking is that it would not conflict with the November 2010 KohaCon in New Zealand and at some point Chris and I talked about that. The delegate idea is very reasonable. That is exactly how the CODI organization handled it for Dynix and Horizon users. Unfortunately, it's not likely that public institutions in the US would pay for employees to attend a conference in New Zealand. A co-worker and I talked about going to New Zealand (on our own dime), but we are slated to migrate in fall 2010 so it's not likely. But we will see! It's highly worth the ticket ! But for this, we need a worldwide conference. it's code-oriented. So, I think we could split in 2: - KohaCon - KohaHack. Patron Category TYPES_REvised question :)
by Nadel Catura 11 Sep '09

I already know that the Patron Category Types are hardcoded in the system. But is there a way for me to edit the code, for me to be able to add and delete category types? Because in our library, the Adult and Child Category types are not really useful. So we are planning to add the following category types: 1. Student (does NOT need guarantor) 2. Employee (replacement to the Staff Category type) So we really need a way to edit the code and add the said category types. PLease help. ---------------------------- Original Message ---------------------------- Subject: Patron Category TYPES From: "Nadel Catura" <caturan(a)canlubang.dlsu.edu.ph> Date: Fri, September 11, 2009 11:37 am To: Koha(a)lists.katipo.co.nz -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I already know that the Patron Category Types are hardcoded in the system. Re: [Koha] [Koha-devel] Poll for Koha foundation...
by Steve Wills 11 Sep '09

My Two cents is that we do not form a Koha community or an Evergreen community in competition. Let's talk about forming/joining a library community which would support and endorse Library support projects in cooperation. The Evergreen community is at almost that same place at the age of three that this Koha community seems to be with respect to this subject. The histories are different in terms of development detail but within the library community, there appears to be some blood in the water and that is making it difficult to see clearly downstream. Open Source communities are formed for the benefit of a global world in need of affordable, considered solutions. I would propose that we think about a foundation dedicated to managing and perfecting solutions for libraries with a structure that draws from such successful FOSS projects as Elicpse, Sourceforge, and Apache. Such a foundation would be chartered to serve librarian, patron and developer alike without any particular alligence to Koha, Evergreen or whatever else we spawn in the future that we wish to give back to the library community. Hello, Yesterday, i posted to the devel list about volunteering services and time to administer them, if any were needed for the Koha community with the formation of a foundation. Several people (Chris, Steven, Rachel, Paul, ... hope i haven't missed anyone) have responded very graciously. Here's my next suggestion: To prepare for the foundation, let's run a public poll that people can volunteer to complete with some very general questions like: a) what their idea of a Koha foundation is, b) whether they have suggestions of other examples to emulate, c) their reaction to recent happenings with Koha, d) their expectations for the roadmap in the hands of a foundation, etc. Looks like this will have to be a 'free-form' + multiple-choice form of survey. My "ulterior" motive for posting is to spark more discussion in the build-up to the meeting on the 15th, because i see very little on the list itself on, for example: a) Reflections on what exactly has happened to bring this about b) Thoughts on some aims and aspirations for a foundation c) Suggestions for how it should be structured and operate d) Some practical aspects for bringing about a lot more collaboration...etc. So, i have decided to post something every day now hoping to kick-start some discussion, because, (as Owen said a few days ago...) i feel i am 'flying blind' for now. Moving up and remaining open
by Nicole Engard 11 Sep '09

Hello everyone, I wanted to write to you all before news started spreading and let you know that I have taken a position with ByWater Solutions and BibLibre that will start on October 1st. These two amazing companies have come together to offer me a role that will allow me to not only help libraries understand open source but to stay active in the community. This means that I will remain your document manager - as I was informed at KohaCon - until I drop :) I have also been learning more and more about the software and participating more in submitting patches - something I hope to start doing more often. Lastly, I read the comments in the most recent IRC meeting and wanted to thank all of you who said such kind things about me :) I enjoy being documentation manager and helping other learn about Koha and open source in general and would never have stopped doing that. Thanks, Nicole C. Engard Koha Documentation Manager

Salvete! >The 2 ideas might not be exclusive. The "official", worldwide kohaCon Oh no, I'm a hedonist. I don't do well with exclusive. >in NZ. A KohaCon US: given the state of the economy, I doubt many >people in the US will have founding to go over to New Zealand, so a >KohaCon US is in order in any case. And a KohaCon Europe, for the same >(sad, economic) reasons. *nod* >Or: KohaCon NZ in 2010. KohaCon US in 2010 too. KohaCon Europe in 2011. >But I personally would love (I don't know how to stress this enough) >to go to Wellington, visit Levin and Horowhenua LT, meet with some >people in Real Life for the 1st time. And there are French-speaking >islands in the South Pacific too: maybe I can go visit them to try to >convince them to switch to Koha. A couple of caveats. If there were to be local flavours, which I think is a good idea (you have this with IFLA, ALA, CILIP, et cetera) I would urge meticulous advance planning so that multiple conferences didn't conflict. I'd love to see a regional approach similar to my Fraternity's employed. Our National conference rotates by Region every other year, so that eventually, it will be in your backyard. Also, my Fraternity sets things up so that there's a regional conference in alternation with the National. This allows people to get to both if they choose without too much strain on the budget. I remember people voicing that they got their funding a little late to get to KohaCon in Plano. When is an ideal time, if ever? Obviously we want to accommodate both programmers and librarians. Maybe I am showing my bias, but I would think that early August might be a good time for us. (That said, I'd love NZ to be in January for purposes of getting Chris cocktails. It goes back to the lost New Year's. I can't help it! Who knows, this might not be good for Chris.) Cheers, Brooke

Koha support by BSZ
by Fischer, Katrin 11 Sep '09

Hi all, Since our first two patches have been pushed to HEAD for inclusion in 3.2 we are happy to introduce ourselves to the Koha community: BSZ (http://titan.bsz-bw.de/cms/bsz/about/) is a state institution of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, for libraries, museums and archives. The BSZ division 'Union Catalog' operates the Südwestdeutscher Bibliotheksverbund (SWB), a union catalog comprising more than 1000 mostly academic libraries in Baden-Württemberg, Saarland, Saxony, and other states in Germany, as well as those of the Goethe-Instituts. The BSZ division 'Library Systems' provides an application service for a (commercial) library system to academic libraries in the SWB consortium. In December 2008 we made our first contract to host and support Koha, the system will go live on October, 12th 2009. Items have been entered and fitted with RFID tags over the last months, the library will use a self check system connected to Koha. For the time being we plan to support Koha in another three libraries. Our main focus will be the German Koha translation and documentation. Looking forward to working with you, Katrin Fischer Wolfgang Heymans Bibliotheksservice-Zentrum Baden-Württemberg 78457 Konstanz Germany http://www2.bsz-bw.de/cms/
