configs for small scale use
by david＠lang.hm 01 Feb '10

01 Feb '10

Recently the question of how to manage a large personal library (several of us have accumulated a few thousand books) came up on a sysadmin mailing list, and koha was mentioned as a possibility. In looking through the documentation I am seeing that it is a very powerful package, but I am not seeing good examples of how to get started for a small library. It's almost like the documentation assumes that you will be hiring a consulting team (or someone who has worked with it before) to do the initial setup and is mostly reference matrial for them to look up the details of a specific option. I am missing a 'getting started from scratch' type document. Has anyone put togeather a sample config that could be used for a single-location library? it would need to track inventory and do checkouts, but not budgeting or inter-library loans. David Lang

SQL for item held at one or two out of three libraries
by Ian Trim 01 Feb '10

01 Feb '10

Hi all We have three libraries. How does one ask for items that are: * held at a specific library * might be at one other of the three libraries * but definitely NOT held at all three libraries This is for stock rotation work. Thank you in advance. ~Perhaps just not held at all three libraries will cut the mustard - as the results will be small enough to eyeball (doing it by ccode and not onloan). Kohacon10 Call for Volunteers
by Chris Cormack 31 Jan '10

31 Jan '10

Hi All Now the dates and venue are confirmed, and two sponsors found so far (more gratefully accepted) it's time to work on a bit more planning. With being Release Manager for 3.4 I am going to be flat out so I'm putting out a call for volunteers to help. Things you can help with, - We need to put out a call for presenters soon, people to manage that would be neat. - Talking to hotels/backpackers in Wellington, to see if we can get a group discount. - Content for the website - Hackfest organiser - Anything else you can think of Chris

Re: [Koha] configs for small scale use
by Edward M Corrado 31 Jan '10

At Binghamton University the Career Development Center is using Koha. They have about 800 items. The person doing all the day to day stuff has no library training but says she loves it and since we set her up and provided basic training she hasn't called us once about how to do something (it has been 6 months). Thus from my expierence running Koha is not a problem. I thought it was easy to set up, but I know ILSs and lamp applications so your milage may vary. There is the Newbie Guide: http://www.pakban.net/koha/tut/newbie.html and the wiki (wiki.koha.org) which includes things like install docs (which are actually packaged with Koha) and other tips that you might be looking for. As for a small library, there are plenty of libraries using Koha just the way you want to. Intoduction and Question
by Merhar, Rebecca 30 Jan '10

30 Jan '10

Hi Koha list, I am a library assistant at Palo Alto University working on Processing. I have spent most of my time over the last few weeks fighting with Koha to print labels for us and we now have labels that are almost exactly what we want. However, I was wondering one thing: We would love to add the copy number of our books and DVDs (etc) to the labels but it looks funny to have just another number randomly on the spine label so it would be ideal to have the word "copy" before it. I have been trying to figure out how to add the "copy" using various codes (slashes, brackets around it, etc.) before it and haven't been able to make it work. Does anyone know how to add a word into the List Field under Biographical Data to Print under Label Layout? Thank you all for your help, Rebecca Library Assistant

Perceptions 2009: An International Survey of Library Automation
by Nicole Engard 30 Jan '10

30 Jan '10

Marshall Breeding has published his annual Library Automation Perceptions Report: http://www.librarytechnology.org/perceptions2009.pl Koha came out pretty darn well when independently hosted. What I'm surprised about is that the non-US Koha support companies are missing. This means that next year we need to get more international Koha libraries to answer the survey!! Check it out: http://www.librarytechnology.org/perceptions2009.pl Thanks Nicole C. Engard
