But is not mandatory at lavel of data storage (MySQL defintions). So what you can do ? During the inpt of items data (with also barcode) in my installation is present a check to control if the barcode is unique. Leave this check and insert some data. Than try if all is OK for you. In the future you could have problems on circulation. I am wrestling with what to do with bound with items - we seem to have a significant number of pamphlets, music scores, etc. that were bound together. The whole volume has the same accession number / barcode. Because the volume itself is an artificial construction (basically a wrapper for the items within) we haven't created a record for the volume as a whole. Our current system happily accepts multiple records with the same number. But I'm a bit worried about what might happen in Koha. Our rare materials (where almost all of the bound with items are) are gradually being moved into better storage, so I can see where it makes sense to be able to 'move' all the bound with parts together using one barcode. What happens if you search on a barcode and you get multiple hits? Do I need to create an artificial parent record with the barcode for the bound volume and then make child records that don't have barcodes for the individual items within? These items will not be circulated, so it's less of an issue in that respect. We also have a few multi-format boxed sets where individual items have been catalogued. Similar kind of thing, they aren't circulating items, they're always kept together. The component parts were given letters after the main number: 1011a, 1011b, 1011c, etc. possibly because these items may be physically seperated from their mates, whereas the bound items can't be. I think we need to be more consistent here, but that's not really a Koha problem. -- Elaine

Koha Catalog Search Problems

Hi All, I have a interesting problem going on with the search function on my Koha installation: http://library.stmchs.org There are certain searches that will always bring up the undefined value error: "Can't call method "as_usmarc" on an undefined value at /usr/share/koha/lib/C4/Search.pm line 2279." For example, doing a search for "sense" will bring up the error. However, performing a search for "sensibility" will return a normal search listing. The problem seems limited to the main opac keyword search. If I were to search "sense" in the title, I don't receive any of these errors. I've looked up the error and it seems most of the troubleshooting out there points to various paths for perl, but there has been nothing out there that explains why I would be getting such inconsistent results. I have tried running the re-indexing script (we are non-zebra here), but that doesn't seem to fix anything. I have wondered if it had something to do with the Amazon listings I have been using, but removing that information and using alternatives has not altered anything either. Has anybody seen something similar? I am running on 3.00.04 on OS X Server 10.5. Thanks, Joe Fahs

installing koha course

One problem with OSS in libraries is lack of education. As a library school professor, I am trying to help. Last week, I ran an intensive course. Students, without any previous system admininstration experience, installed debian, then rented debian servers (since we can't host the servers at the school) and then installed koha. All 17 students managed to do it. For what it's worth, I am making my syllabus available http://openlib.org/home/krichel/courses/lis508p10w/ with slide presentations, and the installation documentation. Serials module issues:

Hello all, I'm sending these issues to the lists first to see if anyone has experienced them in the past. I will submit them as bugs if I don't learn that they are the result of a configuration problem. I'm using Koha 3.00.05.001 (3.0.x from git) on Debian Lenny. 1. When setting up a subscription, I set up the following parameters: Under "Serials planning" First issue publication date: "01/18/2010" "1/week" from the "Frequency" drop-down. "Volume, Number" from the "Numbering pattern" drop-down. Starting with Volume "1"; Number "1" Rollover at "52" Subscription start date: "01/18/2010" Subscription length: "Number of issues": "52" I test the Prediction Pattern, which returns: Based on the information entered, the Numbering Pattern will look like this: Vol 1, No 1 Vol 1, No 2 Vol 1, No 3 Vol 1, No 4 Vol 1, No 5 Vol 1, No 6 Vol 1, No 7 Vol 1, No 8 Vol 1, No 9 Vol 1, No 10 Vol 1, No 11 Vol 1, No 12 When I save the subscription, everything works as it should.01/17/2011 is projected as the "End date" If, instead, I enter "01/01/2010" as the "First issue publication date" & "Subscription start date," the "End date" is projected as "12/31/2009." Since the end date is before today and the start date, the issues in the subscription cannot be received and the "End date" cannot be corrected. Everything works fine if I use a frequency other than "1/week" so it seems the bug is related to this frequency type. 2. If I enter all data as in #1, with the exception of: Subscription length: "Number of months": "12" After saving, this field is automatically changed to "Number of issues." Christopher, There is no need to edit zebra configuration to make other item type appear. This appears to be a problem with the import process. Which MARC field, sub-field are the new item types in? The name is a bit misleading, but you can easily make patron cards with it, with all the information you possibly could want, it is very versatile. We use an extra table in the koha database to extract information.
