Nicole, I'll pay your petrol costs if it means you get to see a bit of our beautiful country. It's the least I can do given how much work you do for all of us. And the US$ takes you a looong way in little old NZ. ;-) Mark -- Hei konā mai, Mark Osborne Deputy Principal, Albany Senior High School. http://wikieducator.org/Albany_Senior_High_School http://wikieducator.org/Albany_Senior_High_School/ICTs > While it sounds awesome - it also sounds expensive ... as it is I know > I'm paying for 2 round trip tickets, hotel and food - and that is > going to break the bank. So if those trips can be super super cheap >then maybe we could make it work. > >Nicole >

Email alert from Koha
by Vimal Kumar 26 Jan '10

26 Jan '10

Dear Friends, This is a request to Koha users with experience in configuring mail system (Sendmail or Postfix) for Koha. Many Koha users wish the availability of a documentation for preparing Koha to send automatic overdue notice and advance notices. Documentation to be include installation of sendmail or postfix, configuration, settings in Koha for mail alerts, and settings for cronjob. Thanks in advance, -- Vimal Kumar V. Asst. Need MARC record database help
by Shane Skeens 26 Jan '10

26 Jan '10

hi all, we just set up a KohaExpress 3.0x installation through LibLime, who is hosting the installation. we staged & imported a list of MARC21 records, which showed up fine in the database & OPAC. we then "reverted" the record import because we discovered many duplicates in the list & wanted to import an updated list. after the "undo" (done through the administrative backend & "Undo Import" button), the records still appear in searches on the OPAC & backend, but the links return 404 "page not found" errors. we have re-imported the first list & tried to "revert" it again, but the items were duplicated in the database, as though it did not detect the existing (broken) record-references. additional "undo" attempts have yielded the same results. there are no items entered yet. is there a way to purge (erase) the entire database so we can start over? we do not have access to SSH or a command line, so we can not use any command options or see the database files themselves. any help is greatly appreciated! thank you! shane

Koha Con 2010 : Home Accommodation in Wellington
by Andrew Chilton 26 Jan '10

26 Jan '10

Hi all, Chris put up a few links on a KohaCon2010 starting page: http://wiki.koha.org/doku.php?id=en:kohacon2010:start >From there we now have an accommodation http://wiki.koha.org/doku.php?id=en:kohacon2010:billets page for those of you who might want to stay with someone rather than stay at a hotel. Also, if this means you _can_ come due to the cash saving or otherwise miss out, then that's great. I figure a format of: * Your Name (approx. place you live) [other info] * details of accommodation on offer - ? * ... - ? I've put myself down, some details about what I might have to offer (subject to change I'm afraid, gotta check with my flatmate) so if anyone needs a place to stay in Wellington during KohaCon2010, just put your name where the question marks are. Maybe we also need a list underneath for people who _want_ accommodation but there isn't anything suitable at the present time. Cheers, Andy -- contact: Andrew Chilton website: http://www.chilts.org/

Koha Con 2010 : any interest a 2 day side trip?
by Joann Ransom 26 Jan '10

26 Jan '10

So I am thinking it would be really nice to meet people coming into Auckland for Koha Conference and drive them down to Wellington. We could take a few days for a quick detour through Rotorua and heartland NZ, driving down through the North Island via Levin. Current thinking is: Day 1: arrive in Auckland, dinner at the harbour <http://www.viaduct.co.nz/>area. Day 2: travel to Rotorua (3 hours ish) afternoon at Te Puia<http://www.tepuia.com/about-us/index.html>thermal area, Maori cultural night<http://www.mitai.co.nz/Mitai_Maori_Village/Hangi_Meal_IDL=3_IDT=1178_ID=670…>in the evening, spend night in Rotorua. Day 3: drive down the island, afternoon tea / civic reception at Levin (4 hours drive), travel to Wellington for evening meal and the night. Day 4: either a spare day in Wellington or day 1 of Koha Conference. So what do you reckon? If there is enough interest I'll put some indicative pricing together. -- Joann Ransom RLIANZA Acting Head of Libraries, Horowhenua Library Trust.

zebra error: uninitialized value
by Walls, Ian 25 Jan '10

25 Jan '10

Everyone, I'm getting the following error occasionally in my inbox. It's coming from my rebuild_zebra.pl cronjob: Use of uninitialized value in substitution (s///) at /usr/share/koha/lib/C4/Charset.pm line 304 This doesn't happen every time the job runs, and updates/new records are reflected in the catalog, but surely it must mean something. Has anyone else encountered this error before? Is there anything I should be doing to alleviate it? Database Upgrade Problem
by Joel Ewy 25 Jan '10

25 Jan '10

Hello All, I'm helping a small library with their Koha installation, and I'm having trouble with the database. We initially set up Koha (2.2 I believe) a couple years ago on Ubuntu 7.04. The machine recently ran out of disk space, which resulted in a truncated SQL database. The Koha installation also appears to be mangled. Fortunately we do have backups of the database. But rather than attempting to repair the old server, we have decided to do a fresh install on newly donated hardware with Ubuntu 8.04 and Koha 3.00.02. I have Koha running on the new machine, but I seem to be having trouble importing and converting the old database. I'm fairly certain that the version of the old database I'm trying to use is pre-disk space calamity. It appears to be 38 megabytes of good SQL, though I'm no expert on SQL. (We're using MySQL.) I've imported it with webmin (though I'm not afraid of the shell if there's any reason to suspect webmin of foul play) and run the Perl script to update from 2.2, and then the other update script. Everything appears OK, but when I go to search for anything -- author, title, or anything else -- there are always no results found. I'm pretty sure Koha is using the right database because it is named differently from the default, and that name is reflected in the Koha web interface. I have re-exported the converted database, and all the data appear to be there, though I can't say just by looking at it that it's in the form it needs to be in for Koha to make sense of it. They're getting pretty desperate to get something up and running again, so I may try to repair the old server anyway as a stop gap. But is there something obvious I have missed in converting the database from 2.2 to 3.00.02? Is there a way I can tell whether the database has all the right tables for Koha 3? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks. Joel Ewy

Re: [Koha] Users and developers (was KUDOS - ALA Proposed Agenda)
by Owen Leonard 25 Jan '10

25 Jan '10

Okay, get ready for a rant... > Sometimes "users" and "developers" are at opposite poles... When? I'm a Koha user. And in using Koha I saw that I could make Koha better, and in time became a Koha developer. There is no Koha developer out there who is developing Koha features just because they think it would be cool to do. Koha developers are doing their work because they *see* a need, in an actual user or an actual library. Or developers are getting paid by libraries to develop the features the libraries need. Here's when users and developers are at opposite poles: - When a company decides to develop a feature that they think will help sell a product, even though the feature doesn't meet any actual need - When a company throttles or cripples a feature in a product because they want to charge extra for a particular feature No self-respecting Koha developer or Koha support company is doing that kind of stuff. That's why we're here. > I think this is more about giving the "users" more of a voice than they've traditionally had in > the past, no? I honestly don't know where this comes from. The Koha project is just about as open and accessible as any software project can be. You can participate on the mailing list, you can submit bug reports yourself, you can submit your own patches or hire your own programmers to write code for you. You can talk to Koha developers on IRC almost 24 hours a day! The only way in which one might consider that users need "more of a voice" is if you think of it in terms of working collectively to achieve a goal that Koha libraries individually could not. If that's the intention of that statement then, rant over. I agree 100% that libraries should be seeking ways to pool their resources ($$) to get done the things they want done, i.e. hire developers or commission existing companies to do work for them. However, if by "more of a voice" you mean, "If we all get together an ask for a feature the Koha developers should implement it," then no. This is open source, but time is money. You can donate your time (as I do, every day, in code, markup, email, and IRC) or you can donate your money--in the form of paid development work. This doesn't shut anyone out. But yes, there is a bar that you have to clear. I don't know how else it can work. So: Let's get together as users and/or developers and figure out how we can get some stuff done. Let's put together a structure by which Koha users can spec out new features and get them funded, collectively. Let's put together a structure by which Koha users can communicate with their vendors without fear of exclusion or reprisal. Let's not talk about a users group breaking down some barrier that isn't really there--let's talk about strengthening and leveraging the connection that we *already have!* -- Owen -- Web Developer Athens County Public Libraries http://www.myacpl.org
