Commentary on PTFS Acquisition of LibLime
by Nicole Engard 12 Feb '10

12 Feb '10

Hi all, There has been a lot of commentary on the recent acquisition including a few librarians chiming in (which you know I love). Anyway, I compiled a list of links of those I have found so far - including an article from OStatic (which I think is pretty cool). If you have another post to add to this list just reply here. I'll put all of these links in the next newsletter. * http://ostatic.com/blog/koha-optimistic-that-forked-tree-and-troubles-are-h… * http://leephillips2.wordpress.com/2010/01/16/a-request-to-ptfs-from-montana… * http://wizzyrea.wordpress.com/2010/01/15/if-all-goes-well-a-bright-new-day-… * http://www.libraryjournal.com/article/CA6714841.html * http://blog.bigballofwax.co.nz/2010/01/14/ptfs-acquires-liblime/ * http://bywatersolutions.com/?p=320 * http://collaborativelibrarianship.wordpress.com/2010/01/13/major-shake-ratt… Thanks Nicole

Koha support from Equinox
by Galen Charlton 11 Feb '10

11 Feb '10

Hi, As some of you know, I'm Galen Charlton, release manager for Koha 3.2. I have some news to share from my employer, Equinox Software, Inc. We will start offering services for Koha, including hosting, support, migration, and development. Our initial focus will on hosting and support, but we'll be active in development as well. Equinox has been supporting and developing another big open source ILS, Evergreen, since 2006, and Equinox's founders were heavily involved in the creation of Evergreen for the Georgia PINES consortium. We'll be using our Evergreen experience and in-house Koha experience to support both ILSs for our customers. We'll also work to bring good ideas from Koha into Evergreen, and vice versa. Equinox is committed to the public, mainstream Koha. We will be extending the Equinox Promise [1] to our Koha customers. In particular, all code that we develop for our Koha customers will be submitted in a timely fashion and will always be available in a convenient form for anybody to use and improve. Our hosted customers will always have direct access to the source code and Git repositories for their particular Koha setups and local customizations. We will encourage and support any customers of ours who want to directly participate in Koha development. Problem with holds/reserves after update
by Martin Longo 10 Feb '10

10 Feb '10

Hello there ... I am running Koha 3.00.06.005 on a Linux Debian lenny and I'm having problems with holds/reserves after updating my 3.0.1 to 3.0.5 and the problem persist with this version. Whenever I try to place a hold on any item, from the intranet or from the OPAC, the system tells me 'none of these items can be placed on hold.' The OPAC also says 'Unavailable (lost or missing)' besides every item of the record... and every item has a red 'X' .. so I can't reserve the next copy available and I can't select wich item I want to reserve Now... I have checked and there is no flag in the items that marks them as lost or withdrawn. and is not very likely that the entire catalog was marked as lost by mistake... My logs report the following Whenever I click on Place Hold on the detailed view of the record (in the intranet): [Tue Feb 09 14:10:17 2010] [error] [client 192.168.212.12] [Tue Feb 9 14:10:17 2010] request.pl: Use of uninitialized value $findborrower in substitution (s///) at /home/koha/kohafromgit/reserve/request.pl line 68., referer: http://192.168.212.19:9090/cgi-bin/koha/catalogue/detail.pl?biblionumber=14… [Tue Feb 09 14:10:17 2010] [error] [client 192.168.212.12] [Tue Feb 9 14:10:17 2010] request.pl: Use of uninitialized value $transfertwhen in string ne at /home/koha/kohafromgit/reserve/request.pl line 327., referer: http://192.168.212.19:9090/cgi-bin/koha/catalogue/detail.pl?biblionumber=14… [Tue Feb 09 14:10:17 2010] [error] [client 192.168.212.12] [Tue Feb 9 14:10:17 2010] request.pl: Use of uninitialized value $transfertwhen in string ne at /home/koha/kohafromgit/reserve/request.pl line 327., referer: http://192.168.212.19:9090/cgi-bin/koha/catalogue/detail.pl?biblionumber=14… [Tue Feb 09 14:10:17 2010] [error] [client 192.168.212.12] [Tue Feb 9 14:10:17 2010] request.pl: Use of uninitialized value $num_override in numeric eq (==) at /home/koha/kohafromgit/reserve/request.pl line 382., referer: http://192.168.212.19:9090/cgi-bin/koha/catalogue/detail.pl?biblionumber=14… [Tue Feb 09 14:10:17 2010] [error] [client 192.168.212.12] [Tue Feb 9 14:10:17 2010] request.pl: Use of uninitialized value $num_available in numeric eq (==) at /home/koha/kohafromgit/reserve/request.pl line 382., referer: http://192.168.212.19:9090/cgi-bin/koha/catalogue/detail.pl?biblionumber=14… [Tue Feb 09 14:10:17 2010] [error] [client 192.168.212.12] [Tue Feb 9 14:10:17 2010] request.pl: Use of uninitialized value in hash element at /home/koha/kohafromgit/reserve/request.pl line 493., referer: http://192.168.212.19:9090/cgi-bin/koha/catalogue/detail.pl?biblionumber=14… And this when I enter the cardnumber of the patron that is palcing the hold and click Search .. I have found some other tables that i guess contain default values ... default_borrower_circ_rules has categorycode maxissueqty A 7 S 7 default_branch_circ_rules has nothing default_branch_item_rules has itemtype holdallowed IMP 2 default_circ_rules has nothing ... but this one is weird... cause it has a column named 'singleton' defined as enum('singleton') .. so "singleton" is the only value that column can have ... Ok .. guess is all the info I have at the moment ... If somebody have a tip or a solution to my problem it would be great! Thanks in advance -- Ing. J. Martin Longo Depto. I am very interested in an ILL module too - having worked as an ILL librarian for several years it's one of the very few things that stand out as "missing" in Koha, in my eyes. I also think that Norwegian librarians are used to having this functionality integrated into their ILS, as opposed to et least some other countries, where I understand that the norm is to deal with this functionality outside of the ILS. Unfortunately, here in Norway we have our very own ILL standard or protocol, called NILL, which is documented, in Norwegian only, here: http://www.biblev.no/nill/ Basically the protocol consists of a set of XML messages that are passed between systems over e-mail(!). Now, NILL may or may not be of interest to libraries outside Norway, but I am thinking that at least some functionality will be of common interest, and that there could be a choice of different protocols, or an easy way to adapt the core functionality to different protocols. I am but a tiny vendor trying to attract my first customers, but I certainly hope to be able to find a library that could be interested enough in Koha to be willing to sponsor some work on ILL and NILL. In the meantime I am more than willing to contribute time and any knowledge on the subject that I may have, in order to help Koha get an ILL module up and running. We have a couple of prospective customers that are currently using ILL on their existing systems and a few customers who are likely to be interested. We have not worked out a spec yet or the funding, but have been discussing doing so. Folks here developed the Interlibrary Loans for Unicorn in the UK so we have some experience of developing this and understanding the workflow. That was done with the Unicorn API and without access to the source code, so it can only be easier on Koha. The UK libraries make much use of the British Library Document Supply Service but also often interlend between institutions. Both of these are often required or highly desirable by UK libraries. Is there any more interest out there? All the best. They use a format called ARTTel (it's a plain text format, pretty basic). There is a call for some other formats though, mainly a generic type letter and also the BMA (British Medical Association). ISOILL never really kicked off and we don't really hear of any call for this. I think, ideally, something where you could plugin extra formats would be ideal so that they could be added to on a regional basis or as the need arose. I know Spain and Denmark have regional formats. The British Library have their own ARTEL service which has its own online protocol or you can communicate with it using emails formatted according to their rules. I understand that the implementation of ISO10160/1 never really took off. The result is always: "No results match your search for kw,wrdl: bachmc-itemtype:CDAU". There are matching records in the database. 3) Sorting search results only works for "title". We need it to work for "author" and "dates" too. Something's obviously seriously wrong with the search in this system. I am afraid I have no idea about a solution, but it would probably be easier to help if you told the list - what version of Koha you are running - if you are running with Zebra or NoZebra Regards, Magnus Enger libriotech.no On 10 February 2010 13:15, PasiK <pasi.korkalo(a)oululainen.com> wrote: > > We have a number of problems with OPAC: > > 1) ?Advanced search always searches with ?and?, how can we get "or" and > "not" to work too? > 2) Limiting searches by item type doesn't work.
