The Potential Death of Koha in Pennsylvania Libraries
by Jim Minges 23 Apr '10

23 Apr '10

I certainly don't know any details of what is planned in Pennsylvania. However the concerns expressed underline the need for seamless interconnection of disparate systems (and not only Koha and Evergreen) so that all libraries can be interconnected for resource sharing process. An interesting project is the open source project that Equinox is developing for the state of Ohio to interconnect different ILS systems. Ohio is paying for the primary programming but the intent is that other states can utilize that software at a modest cost for the programming to connect their states. However, I believe it will be based on the NCIP protocol. It would be useful for the Koha community to sponsor integration of the NCIP standard into Koha, so that we could utilize this connection option. Koha problems with zebra and opac searches after new bukmarcimport
by Linda Culberson 22 Apr '10

22 Apr '10

All, We need a new bulkmarcimport this morning and everything looks wonderful in the staff client. The searches and links all work beautifully. However the opac searches pull up nothing. I double/triple checked and we do have some 942$n with suppressed in so that shouldn't be the problem. If I save titles a public list in the staff client, I can see those records and they appear as they should, except the links don't work, of course. In the koha-error_log I see repeated errors that are like: addbybiblionumber.pl: "my" variable $shelflist masks earlier declaration in same scope at /usr/share/koha/intranet/cgi-bin/virtualshelves/addbybiblionumber.pl line 106., referer: http://koha.mdah.state.ms.us:8080/cgi-bin/koha/virtualshelves/addbybiblionu… with only the biblionumber changing in the koha-opac-error_log the repeated error is opac-search.pl: Use of uninitialized value in pattern match (m//) at /usr/share/koha/opac/cgi-bin/opac/opac-search.pl line 405. The koha-zebraqueue-output.log is huge and the repeated error is Can't locate Unix/Syslog.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/share/koha/lib /etc/perl /usr/local/lib/perl/5.8.8 /usr/local/share/perl/5.8.8 /usr/lib/perl5 /usr/share/perl5 /usr/lib/perl/5.8 /usr/share/perl/5.8 /usr/local/lib/site_perl .) at /usr/share/koha/bin/zebraqueue_daemon.pl line 14. hidelostitem & biblios without any item
by Paul Poulain 22 Apr '10

22 Apr '10

Hi, an interesting question : if you set the hidelostitem syspref in Koha, then all biblios without any items ... are hidden as well. so, it's not only a matter of having an item declared "lost". In France/UNIMARC/our customers, there are sometimes biblios without any items (like websites). So, is it relevant to have this behaviour in hidelostitems ? Shouldn't we use the rule : "if there is at least 1 item, and it is lost" ? opinion welcomed ;-) -- Paul POULAIN http://www.biblibre.com Expert en Logiciels Libres pour l'info-doc Tel : (33) 4 91 81 35 08

The Potential Death of Koha in Pennsylvania Libraries
by Kyle Hall 22 Apr '10

22 Apr '10

The State Library her in Pennsylvania has started planning for a state-wide ILS. My Director, John Brice attended a tech committee netting this past Friday, bringing myself and Cindy Murdock as well. At the meeting, it was announced that HSLC and Equinox will be installing Evergreen in 33 libraries currently using Millennium. In all likelyhood, in the future all the libraries in the state will be required to switch over to Evergreen. Needless to say, my boss and myself are extremely upset by this proposition to say the least. I would applaud the choice of a FOSS ILS, but the choice would not bring any advantage. It appears to me to be a strictly financial decision. The idea being pushed at the meeting was to give libraries as little choice as possible to keep down costs. If we were forced to switch to Evergreen, not only would our huge investment in Koha via time and money be thrown away, but we would be forced into a new system over which we would be no control or ability to customize. We would have no control over the quality of service, as the servers are planned to be centralized somewhere within the state. I do not relish the idea of our current freedoms being taken away. labels and barcodes: name replaced by "patron" or "staff"?
by David M. Bucknell 22 Apr '10

22 Apr '10

Hi, As I try to get patron cards printing to a pdf in Koha 3 (not 3.1), no matter what I choose for layout, I never get names to print, just "patron" or "Staff" -- is this a feature? Also, barcodes with call numbers are right-aligned, no matte what alignment I choose ... pointers would be appreciated. ;-) Thank you, David -- *http://iteachnet.org *http://flossed.org *http://ischoolnet.org *Web Ideas, Tools and Sites for Teachers, Schools, and You. *Cell: +66(0*)84 329 1183; Office: +66(0*)2 980 9464 (*No "0" if calling from overseas.) ---------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program.

import subject heading record
by Thomas Krichel 22 Apr '10

22 Apr '10

Hi koha gang, consider, for example, this subject heading MARC record from LoC http://authorities.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?AuthRecID=4717226&v1=1&HC=… Is it possible to import this record into a koha installation? I have imported item record via Z39.50 from LoC, but I don't seem to be able reach this authority record using Z39.50, let alone import it. Transcribing it is a solution, but it's a masochist's idea of fun. Cheers, Thomas Krichel http://openlib.org/home/krichel http://authorclaim.org/profile/pkr1 skype: thomaskrichel

Resolved--Springer E-Books Marc File and MarcEditor and MRC formatting issues
by Susan Mustafa 22 Apr '10

22 Apr '10

If anyone else might be facing this issue, the below are the steps from getting the .bin file from Springer into Importing it into Koha. Step 1- Rename .bin into .mrc [No changing internal file structure] Step 2- Load this file into MarcEdit Step 3- Make all the customizations [Adding, modifying, deleting records] [The structure once loaded into MarcEdit would like like below as example] =LDR 02417cam 2200577Ia 4500 =001 ocn184903927 =003 OCoLC =005 20100416100144.0 =006 m\\\\\\\\d\\\\\\\\ =007 cr\cn| =008 071219s2007\\\\nyuacf\\sb\\\\001\0\eng\d =040 \\$aGW5XE$cGW5XE$dGW5XE$dYDXCP$dTEX =020 \\$a9780387465265 =020 \\$a038746526X =029 1\$aAU@$b000042133518 =029 1\$aNZ1$b11675905 =029 1\$aAU@$b000043253015 =035 \\$a(OCoLC)184903927 =037 \\$a978-0-387-28223-7$bSpringer$nhttp://www.springerlink.com =050 14$aQP368.7$b.K37 2007eb =060 14$a2006 N-753 =060 14$aWL 102.8$bK18e 2007 =072 \7$aQP$2lcco =082 04$a612.8/042$222 Step 4- You are sure of all of your changes and are now ready to import into Koha Step 5- On the now finalized modified tmp file, Click on File -> Compile File to MARC Step 6- The newly generated file would have .mrc extension and CAN be staged and imported into Koha. Springer E-Books Marc File and MarcEditor and MRC formatting issues
by Susan Mustafa 22 Apr '10

22 Apr '10

Dear All, Springer has provided me with a .bin file. This file has marc21 data in it and when I stage it into Koha it works fine. However I have to modify this marc file and add fields or edit fields using the [MarcEditor] tool. Now the problem is, in order to read it correctly INSIDE the MARCEDITOR, i change the extension from .BIN to .MRC This is ok up to the loading of the data into the MARC Editor. Now, I added some new fields as well as I have edited some fields. Now the issue is here. ------------ After adding/editing fields in this file, I SAVE as MRC. When I try to load this NEW marc file into KOHA using Staging, it does not go through and it says NaN error. I am not sure what to do now. I am using Koha 3.0.
