Item information in 852 field
by Ingrid Karklins 25 Oct '10

25 Oct '10

Hello. I'm the librarian at the Griffin School in Austin, Texas (a small a college preparatory high school with a focus on the arts). We recently successfully migrated our MARC21 records from Book Systems into Koha. We did *not* succeed in bringing individual *items*. Looking at the Book Systems MARC records, I see that the item barcode and call number are located in the 852 field. Is there are way to bring these into the Koha default 952 fields? Alternately, is there a way to batch create one item each for each of our bibliographic records? Thanks much for your suggestions in advance. Setting up for installation Koha 3.02
by Kevin Jones 25 Oct '10

25 Oct '10

Dear all, I have downloaded, but not installed Koha 3.02 on Ubuntu 10.10 I have followed the instructions that are outlined at the following: http://www.kohadocs.org/Installing_Koha_on_Debian_sarge.html So far things have worked out. At point 3.1.6 (Installing the remaining perl modules) the instructions are as follows... At this point we can install the other Perl modules: koha:/# perl -MCPAN -e 'install “Net::Z3950::ZOOM”' koha:/# perl -MCPAN -e 'install “Digest::MD5”' koha:/# perl -MCPAN -e 'install XML::SAX' koha:/# perl -MCPAN -e 'install Class::Accessor' koha:/# perl -MCPAN -e 'install Business::ISBN' When I copy these to the terminal, the following is returned, root@laptop:/# perl -MCPAN -e 'install “Net::Z3950::ZOOM”' Unrecognized character \xE2 in column 9 at -e line 1. I have no idea where to go from here. If any knows what to do next, or even if there is an easier way to download and install I should be grateful for any instructions. I do know that synaptic has the following package, Ruby binding to the Z39.50 Object-Orientation Model (for Ruby 1.8) FYI, I am a librarian and am downloading this for my own purposes, it is not meant to go into any serious production, but I would like it to be as close as possible to the real thing. One day I hope to "sell" this to the powers that be in my workplace. thanks for any help kevin Jones

Cedarview Library

Hi Marie Jane, I have managed to get Koha partially running again, meaning that it is fully functional, but for now it needs a manual entry in the terminal. I am waiting for somebody to come up with an answer. Basically it's exactly what I thought it was, but so far no easy solution. Sigh. Life's never easy, is it? Anyway, in case you need to work with it; After you have started the computer, open a terminal (click on the little foot at the left bottom, the top of the list is accessories, from there you can open a terminal, basically a text window) In the terminal, type: sudo zebrasrv -D -f /etc/koha/koha-conf.xml (enter) (if it asks for a password, it will be: handsoff) Now it will work. Hopefully I can get it fixed tomorrow, so you won't need this. Marty

I have tried 'sudo /etc/init.d/koha-zebra-daemon start' which does not give me any errors, but I am also convinced it does NOT start the daemon. As far as I'm concerned, it just echoes a text but does not actually start anything. Why I think zebra is not running: This is my output on the non-working system: biblios@debian:~$ ps -ef | grep zebrasrv biblios 3322 3085 0 11:27 pts/0 00:00:00 grep zebrasrv This is my output on the working system: biblios@debian:~$ ps -ef | grep zebrasrv koha 2325 1 0 11:55 ? 00:00:00 daemon --name=koha-zebra-ctl.koha --errlog=/var/log/koha/koha-zebradaemon.err --stdout=/var/log/koha/koha-zebradaemon.log --output=/var/log/koha/koha-zebradaemon-output.log --verbose=1 --respawn --delay=30 --user=koha koha -- /usr/bin/zebrasrv -v none, fatal, warn -f /etc/koha/koha-conf.xml koha 3019 2325 0 12:07 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/zebrasrv -v none, fatal, warn -f /etc/koha/koha-conf.xml biblios 3110 3004 0 12:56 pts/0 00:00:00 grep zebrasrv Also, I can do a 'sudo /etc/init.d/koha-zebra-daemon restart' on the working system without any problems. --- On Mon, 10/25/10, Chris Nighswonger <cnighswonger(a)foundations.edu> wrote: From: Chris Nighswonger <cnighswonger(a)foundations.edu> Subject: Re: [Koha] No search results again... Why? It runs fine on a parallel system but I need this one running! First just try 'sudo /etc/init.d/koha-zebra-daemon start' to restart zebra. Once zebra is started do 'rebuild_zebra.pl -r -a -b -v' which will give you much more info about what might be going wrong. Kind Regards, Chris

This is not a good day... We have upgraded from 3.00.04 to 3.00.06, after running rebuild_zebra.pl -b -a -z it does not have any search results anymore... Scraping online web catalogues to provide Z39.50 server
by Dobrica Pavlinušić 25 Oct '10

25 Oct '10

I wrote simple Z39.50 server which uses WWW::Mechanize to scrape web pages and produce MARC records which can then be imported in Koha. Short announcement is at: http://blog.rot13.org/2010/10/z3950_server_which_scrapes_web_catalogues_for… and source code is on github: http://github.com/dpavlin/Biblio-Z3950 Source is important, because you will have to modify it, even to use another Aleph instance because my instance uses Croatian language, and there are regexes inside which include few words of language to find number or results. But, I hope this will motivate someone to provide a data source or two over Z39.50 :-) -- ...2share!2flame... http://blog.rot13.org

No circulation history or checkout history
by Marty 25 Oct '10

25 Oct '10

For whatever reason there is no circulation history or checkout history in our koha (in either 3.00.04 or 3.00.06) I don't even know where or how the database keeps track of this, so I don't know how to check if there is anything in the database. Especially the checkout history would be helpful as we have some patrons who think it's enough to return an EMPTY DVD box... and some librarians apparently don't check! Any hints or ideas would be helpful. Thanks, Marty

Patron renewal period settings?
by Marty 25 Oct '10

25 Oct '10

We have upgraded from 3.00.04 to 3.00.06 (yes, we are slow, I know 3.2 is out, hurray!) and we noticed that when a patron's card has expired (I first wrote: when a patron has expired, but I guess if they have expired we cannot renew them, lol) and we renew it, it only renews for a period of a month, instead of a year like before. I cannot find any settings for this? Anybody know where to find it? Thanks, Marty
