newbie needs help importing records

We have just downloaded and installed koha for use in our small Catholic school library. We have no current computer records for our books (about 4000 items). I am not a techie or a librarian, but am trying to get this set up. I could really use some help in how to start importing MARC records via a z39.50 server. I am lost in all of the manual directions about MARC identifier fields, etc. In my perfect world, I would like to take a book off of the shelf, search by title in the Library of Congress or other database, import the MARC record, stick a bar code sticker in the book and scan it. Can anyone help me access some basic directions for this or get me started? Thanks so much Shelley

Some problems or questions

Hi there. I was testing my Koha server when some problems ocurred. - When a patron has 6 in 6 checkouts possibles and the staff tries to checkout another item to the patron there is a prompt to say that the patron has already 6 checkouts. In that prompt the staff can checkout the item. There is some option to block the staff to checkout anymore items to that patron? - When a patron has a item checkout, and the staff tries to checkout the same item to another user, there is again a prompt where the staff can checkout the item to the other user. Again there is some Koha option to turn off that funcionalitie? - I've set up the circulation matrix and the circulation rules are working almost fine. The only problem is that the patron can place holds in more items than the holds allowed count. For example a patron with 6 holds allowed can placed holds in more than 6 items. How I can resolve it? Maybe some Koha option is missing me... Regards. Vitor Fernandes.

I have not looked at the code, but from the zebra manual there might be some possibility of mapping the command line (PQF?) " @and " to an allcaps AND, exclusive of lower|mixed case and|And. Chopping and off the beginning would mean you couldn't search for any phrase or collection of words that starts with and. Editing the ccl.properties file and changing buildquery is a much more robust solution and doesn't actually result in reduced functionality. I would accept a patch for that, if anyone wants to send one, otherwise ill try to work on one next week. I don't think one that drops words out that the user is trying to search is one that would be accepted, at least not into 3.4. I can't speak for chris nighswonger the 3.2 maintainer, only myself as 3.4. Curious searching problem with zebra

I'm running koha 3.02.01 on a 64-bit openSUSE 11.3 system with zebra. I have 3 biblios for 'And the band played on', a book, a tape and a DVD. When I search for 'and the band played on', it finds nothing. When I search for 'the band played on', it finds all three. I've done a complete rebuild of the zebra index. Any ideas? -- Bob

In MarcEdit there is a Delimited Text Translator. This can be used to do what you are asking. You just need to define how the data is translated.
