Multilingual Authority Entry
by arihant 26 Sep '13

Hi, We have several books in hindi & gujarati language We want to enter the author name in english & hindi/gujarati language & make it searchable We wrote the name of the author "Hemchandra" in english in 100$a field and wrote the name "हेमचंद्र" in hindi in 880$a field Both the names display on the authority page but when we use the main or the authority search & search for "हेमचंद्र" no results are returned. Which field should we be using to make the alternate text searchable or how to make koha index 880 field inside authority? 880 field works fine for book titles in catalouge mode. Re: [Koha] Koha as a journal citation catalog

Fred - thank you. We've also been interested in this "challenge", but for the moment have not resolved it using Koha. Comments interspersed below: At 01:58 PM 9/25/2013 -0400, Fred King wrote: >[snip] Unfortunately, it's behind a firewall so I can't give you a link Please see: <http://opac.navalmarinearchive.com/cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber…> and note that we have had to use: 856 ## - ELECTRONIC LOCATION AND ACCESS Uniform Resource Identifier <http://www.cnrs-scrn.org/northern_mariner/on_line_content_e.html>http://www.cnrs-scrn.org/northern_mariner/on_line_content_e.html Public note Full index by publishers It's not Koha, but it's fully searchable (thanks to Google) and meets academic requirements (the journal is also available through Ebsco, but as you well know this is not available to the great unwashed public.) As we're the publishers of this particular journal, it's perhaps "normal" that we can adjust various web resources to meet our requirements; in other cases we have used the same 856 solution to refer to more simplistic (non-MARC) indices, e.g. <http://opac.navalmarinearchive.com/cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber…> -- not very clever, but functional. >My conclusion: yes. It takes a lot of work to set up, and it takes more >steps than I'd like to convert Medline records to (my modified version of) >MARC, but the end product is a lot more versatile than the bare Medline >citations with local authors' names highlighted, which is what we had. I'm less worried about "my modified version of" than being a MARC purist. And I don't think that we're alone in thinking that many/most "library systems" consider journals and periodicals as just the last couple of months of a subscription. Holding a "run" of over a hundred years, and wanting to make the "library system" into a useful research tool appears to be neglected. Compare our indexing of "The Rudder" with anything in WorldCat ... >[snip] We're using Koha 3.12, running Ubuntu. For the record, we're 3.8.5 (with customization) on Ubuntu 12.04. In our two year cycle, we'll look at upgrading Koha when we upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04. >[snip] 6. Compile the citations into a .mrc file with MarcEdit. With [absolutely] the greatest of respect for Terry Reese, MarcEdit is Windows[1] only -- I've never been able to get it running in Wine. >A few thoughts: [snip] >Why modify Koha instead of using some other system? I didn't want our >users to have to learn another system. Neither did I. Koha is easy to use, >and we're using it for our library catalog already. I am also a great believer in Koha, but we're not a lending/ILL library so admit very openly that our requirements are not "mainstream." It's great for single item biblios (in the sense of "books") but is challenging for drilling down to articles over long runs of serials. You and I are obviously facing the same challenge, resolving it in different manners. I'm wondering how many others out there have the same goals? [1] the only Windows boxes I have left are 98SE, which will not, unsurprisingly, accommodate MarcEdit. Best - Paul

Re: [Koha] Open source replacement for 3M self check station

---- Original Message ---- From: "Daniel Berthereau" <Daniel.koha(a)Berthereau.net> Sent: 9/25/2013 9:42:56 AM To: Koha(a)lists.katipo.co.nz Subject: [Koha] Open source replacement for 3M self check station Hi, Since 2009, we have a 3M RFID self check in our library and it is well integrated with Koha (3.8). But... Some time ago, an automatic update of Windows made the self check station unavailable. We don't have any backup or install cd (3M refused to give it). The warrantee period is over and 3M asks a high charge to repair it (more than 2000 euros, that is bigger than a computer and the usual devices of a self check). As we 're going to upgrade our Koha installation to 3.12, we want to use an open source system to replace the software of the self check. Does anyone has some experience for an easy-to-install free software with that hardware ? Sincerely, -- Daniel Berthereau _______________________________________________ Koha mailing list http://koha-community.org Koha(a)lists.katipo.co.nz http://lists.katipo.co.nz/mailman/listinfo/koha Daniel, check out https://code.google.com/p/open-source-self-check/ works well here.

opinions about ISBD view in OPAC
by satish 25 Sep '13

25 Sep '13

Hello, Many libraries are following AACR-2 rules for cataloging the item types.( at least for books) and librarian has to use certain punctuation marks. eg: comma, full stop, semi colon, etc. while we creating bibliographic records in koha, we have to manually add them. (while importing from LOC it is exceptional) eg: after place of publication - comma mark is used (264a) after date of publication - full stop mark is used.(264c) and many more. like... (by).(forward slash), ( dot) etc. In ISBD view for an item in OPAC, these punctuation marks does not come up automatically unless it is updated manually. and some times, we will forget to add such punctuation marks also and further lacks in standard procedures in data update. My question is: Is it possible to include this feature (of automatic adding of punctuation marks ) in Koha in future releases ? Since these punctuation marks are standard, and why it has to be added manually in every record, since it is repeatable task ? Any opinions about include or not to include this facility? email about patron account deatils
by Saira Asghar 25 Sep '13

25 Sep '13

Dear All When we create any patron account in koha. Database send him an email about his account details (username and password for login at OPAC ). But in case of *import patrons* it is not sending emails to patrons. it should be send. If any one has its solution then please tell me. If any command needs to run after importing patron. So, all importing patrons receive the email about their account detail then please send that command. -- *Regards* Saira Asghar Librarian Namal College, 30-Kilometer Talagang Road, Mianwali, Pakistan. Dear Community please help me to solve data import matter from excel. After importing data from Excel I have noticed that copies of an item is display separately. Example if a book has 4 copies, it displays as separate items now. I need one bib. record and under that 4 items. I use merge record function but it take time for 100000 records- it would difficult task. The MarcEdit template is like this 0 \\ 020$a 0 0 1 \\0 82$a 0 0 2 \\ 082$b 0 0 3 \\ 100$a 0 0 4 \\ 245$a 0 0 5 \\ 250$a 0 0 6 \\ 260$b 0 0 7 \\ 260$c 0 0 8 \\ 650$a 0 0 9 \\ 942$c 0 0 10 \\ 952$a 0 0 11 \\ 952$b 0 0 12 \\ 952$i 0 0 13 \\ 952$o 0 0 14 \\ 952$p 0 0 15 \\ 952$l 0 0 16 \\ 952$z 0 0 Any one can solve the matter ? please Harsha Balasooriya Senior Assistant Librarian The Open University of Sri Lanka

koha daemon restart error
by MARC FELIX 24 Sep '13

24 Sep '13

I am using debian 6 to run koha 3.12.4. I run this 'sudo ln -s /opt/app/bin/koha-zebra-ctl.sh /etc/init.d/koha-zebra-daemon' to create a symbolic link However when i run 'sudo update-rc.d koha-zebra-daemon defaults' i get the following message 'update-rc.d: using dependency based boot sequencing' and when i go ahead and restart the zebra daemon by running this command '/etc/init.d/koha-zebra-daemon restart' i get the following message.'Restarting the Zebra Server daemon: fatal: failed to find pid for koha-zebra-ctl.koha: No such file or directory' As a result my koha cannot search records even after i have indexed by running this command 'misc/migration_tools/rebuild_zebra.pl -z -b -a' What could be the course of this?
