Problem with the upgrade - OPAC search not working

Happy (almost) new year everyone :) I'm in the process of upgrading a very old 3.0 installation to the most current version - I have to say that this process has been really quite nice - Thanks to everyone involved! I've hit a slight snag near the end with the zebra reindex - and I'm not 100% sure where I have gone wrong. If I bring up the console, I can run reports and see that all the books are in the database. However, when I try to search for a very common word, I have 0 hits. I was a little confused about userids, and there's a chance that I've still got something without the proper permission, but I've just run out of ideas, and was hoping you might be able to help. Using http://lists.katipo.co.nz/pipermail/koha/2013-December/038228.html Step #6, I get an error: ... Records exported: 8897 ====================== REINDEXING zebra ====================== 12:39:24-30/12 zebraidx(13255) [warn] Failed to open /var/lib/koha/mgskoha/biblios/register/rci-0.mf [Permission denied] 12:39:24-30/12 zebraidx(13255) [fatal] mf_read2 reci internal error ====================== CLEANING ====================== ... That is the only error left - and the file doesn't exist.... I even tried creating the register directory and an empty rci-0.mf file (and making both world read/write/executable) but I still see the error. itemcallnumber system preference in UNIMARC

Have recently added a second instance to my koha (v3.14) installation, this time in UNIMARC, and noticed the following: The pre-set (default) value for the itemcallnumber syspref is "082ab", and the example text is "Examples: Dewey: 082ab or 092ab; LOC: 050ab or 090ab; from the item record: 852hi". I was under the impression that the correct entry for a UNIMARC installation would be "676a" for Dewey, or something similar. Should the observation above be correct, then both the default value and the example text should be amended to reflect this in UNIMARC installations. As it regards the example text, I wonder however if MARC flavor selection during set-up can go beyond framework selection and default values; The text may have to be expanded to cover more flavours or warn the user that the example only stands for USMARC/MARC21. Please verify/correct my comment above, so that a bug note may be created if needed. Kind regards, Manos Petridis

Some more ideas on cataloguing and Z39.50 searches

Allow me please to share a couple of ideas I had on zebra cataloguing: a) batch Z39.50 searches. As a non-librarian, I rely on the bibliographical entries of others, and I've found that most of my cataloguing time is spent waiting for Z39.50 search results. It may have to do with the number of targets I normally use, or with the fact that I sometimes look for titles that are carried by some libraries only, or none at all, it seems though that this interactive process is counter-productive. I wonder therefore if you too find batch Z39.50 searches an interesting idea: The user would be able to enter ISBNs (or other similar search terms) in a table, and koha would perform searches against Z39.50 targets in batch mode, either in the background, or semi-interactively, i.e. by taking-up a browser window. Search elements already processed, would be removed from the table, so that the user would be aware when the search is complete for each item. The user would also be able to add more search terms at the bottom of the list, even when the batch search is active. Search results would be stored in an appropriate container (the "reservoir" perhaps) and koha cataloguing (cataloguing/addbooks.pl ?) would be amended to allow for searches against this container too. b ) use reservoir to auto-tune Z39.50 targets' proprieties. I've noticed that the koha entity named "reservoir" holds results of past Z39.50 searches against remote targets. I wonder if these entries could be used to auto-tune the priority of Z39.50 servers, so that one may be able to first search targets that consistently provide results. As it regards priorities, it would be useful to have two sets of priority attributes instead of one, or a scheme could be devised so that the user would be able to split the value range available from the current single column "rank", to denote different groups/search phases: targets to always search first, then known quality targets to search when the first have failed, then the rest, for example. Those entries could be used to check/uncheck en-masse the relevant targets in z3950_search.pl. The user would perform a search against the standard targets (just as in the current implementation where only the targets defined as checked are pre-selected). Then, should this first search bear no results, it would be easy to select the additional servers/targets with a single click. Final push for a new server

I've built a new server and installed an upgrade version of Koha 3.12. I now need to move my database from the old version of Koha 3.0 to the new one. The instructions say to do the following on an upgrade: If you are upgrading from a version older than Koha 3.4.x, run the following command which may take a long time (several hours) to complete for large databases: koha-upgrade-to-3.4. Can someone tell me when to run the koha-update-to-3.4 command? Here are the instructions for importing the database to a new koha install: 1. Use the MySQL dump command to export the Koha instance mysqldump -u root -p koha > kohabackup.sql (on the old koha the database is koha)2. Copy kohabackup.sql to the new server. port the database to the new SQL server. mysql -u koha_library -p library < kohabackup.sql (on the new koha the database is library. Log in to the staff interface to verify data imported. 5. Rebuild zebra. Somewhere here I have to run the koha-upgrade-to-3.4, right? Thanks Phillip

Regarding OPAC search issue.

Hi, I am using koha 3.08 and in OPAC the masthead file contains the drop down box for the searches with option like keyword,title,author,accession number. But while searching with keyword such as "a" fetches results from all the fields like publication,author,title etc. I want the keyword should fetch result only from title,subject or note field not from all the fields. How should i do this. Thanks in advance.

Hi Rocky, I see that there is a problem in search while using the search while searching for english alphabets. When I selected title and searched with alphabet "a" then it gave results with titles which included alphabet a, but when I searched for titles with alphabet "v", I did not get the result, even when there was a single title which had keyword "v". I used the advanced search window as well as the masthead file. Both give the same result. Using Koha 3.12. Exporting and Importing MARC Framework

Hi Everyone, I am trying to edit the BKS MARC framework, by removing unwanted feilds by the library and then export the framework into .sql format and then import the framework into another koha installation of same version( 3.12). after I import the same, when I do a MARC Framework Test I get full OK result. After that I add a Biblio Entry and add item in this framework, I am able to view the record in Catalog Search, but not able to view the Barcode and other Item details that I saved. The Holdings tab below the title information shows BLANK for Item Type, Current Location, Call No. and Barcode fields even when I have filled the data. Only Status and Last seen fields shows data. What could be the problem with Koha regarding this problem. Can anyone guide me? Thanks in advance. Regards, Binu Thomas
