I haven’t known you as long as Chris, but I’ll never forget standing with Katrin at Kohacon13 in the hotel lobby and trying to figure out if you were pianohacker or not :p. It was a pleasure meeting in person back then, and I’ve always been glad to bump into you on IRC. Sorry to see you go, but best of luck with your new opportunity! To quote myself talking about mentoring relationships [they] "have all evolved from people asking questions on IRC or in the mailing lists. Then following up the answer with a thank you; usually the ‘thank you' is what gets me hooked." http://www.itworld.com/article/2768355/open-source-tools/mentoring-in-open-… Jesse you never ever once forgot to say thank you, and I hope that I was a small part of helping you become the awesome man you are. We first met in person at Kohacon09 in Plano Texas, and this is where we also need to thank your parents for allowing you to come meet up with a bunch of weird librarians and programmers you hadn't met ;) https://www.flickr.com/photos/37713236@N03/3471061290/ And most recently in Berlin and Thessaloniki https://www.flickr.com/photos/ranginui/26941372043/ Still discussing technical things with other devs, the difference is this time you were legal to drink a beer ;) I know you will do great things at the new place you are working at, but I also know you have the Koha bug now, and you'll be back ;) All the best, keep in touch Chris

Koha as a local authors catalog: TEST SITE
by King, Fred 22 Jul '16

22 Jul '16

Esteemed colleagues, (Please excuse all the capital letters in my message--they're there to make it ABSOLUTELY CLEAR that this is ONLY A BETA PROJECT at the moment.) At KohaCon 2013 in Reno, I gave a presentation on modifying Koha to serve as a local authors catalog. My presentation was hampered by (1) the Koha server being behind my institution's firewall so I couldn't do a live demo, and (b) I had designed my slideshow the day before during my lunch break since I was giving my presentation in place of someone who couldn't make it. Three years went by. I learned more and more about Koha. I even took a class in Linux system administration. Then earlier this year I started working on Version 2, and this time I've gotten it right. Well, more so than the previous one. I added a few MARC fields and tags here and there, redesigned some to make more sense, and redesigned the structure to make it more accommodating to different institutions and departments within our system. I'm going to be giving a presentation at this year's Koha US conference in Monterey next month, and I'd like to give conference-goers and anybody else interested a preview of my catalog. It's still a TEST SITE, and it DOES NOT OFFICIALLY REPRESENT MY INSTITUTION, or anybody connected with it. So what is it, and what did I do to Koha? I work in a hospital library, and the doctors, nurses, residents, and other associates who work here write articles, give presentations, etc. Our library has tracked publications for years, but after we migrated to Koha I decided to try putting our HTML lists of citations into something more searchable. Most of the works our staff produce are indexed in Medline. I took Medline records, converted them to MARC, and uploaded them to an instance of Koha that I had modified to account for the new or modified field tags. There's more to it than that, but I have to save *something* for the conference, don't I? After all, I have 45 minutes to fill. I am delighted to say that this UNOFFICIAL TEST SITE which is NOT OFFICIALLY AFFILIATED WITH MY INSTITUTION OR ANYBODY ELSE ANYWHERE is available for PREVIEW at http://www.philobiblios.info It's running on one of Digital Ocean's smallest configurations (one processor, 20GB SSD, 512MB RAM), so if a lot of people are looking at it, it may be kind of slow. If it crashes, I'll try moving it to one of their more robust configurations. Comments are welcome, of course--that's why I'm telling you about this UNOFFICIAL TEST SITE before the conference and before it's official. Send comments to authcat (at) philobiblios (dot) us. (Yes, the web site ends in .info, the e-mail address ends in .us.) Do you think I put in enough disclaimers? I purposefully hacked a cronjob to start at 7:55am, since our library opens at 8:00am. I still, however, do not know the cause of this. Though, I don’t understand the 10:32, 11:33, or 11:56 ones. This should resolve the problem temporarily if the search quits working. $ sudo koha-start-zebra dlpms GPML, Mark Tompsett

search quits working
by Scott Owen 20 Jul '16

20 Jul '16

Hi all, I'm having some issues with Koha searching from both the OPAC and the staff Intranet. I have tried several solutions for reindexing etc... including ---Koha-rebuild-zebra -f -v -b mylibrary and ---export PERL5LIB=/usr/share/koha/lib ---export KOHA_CONF=/usr/share/koha/koha-conf.xml ---perl /usr/share/koha/bin/migration_tools/rebuild_zebra.pl -b -r -v -run-as-root none of these commands produce any errors, however, they also do not fix the issue. A reboot of the VM will cause the "search" to work again for a day or two....?? (I know....."it shouldn't make a difference" ...but it does...!?!?!?) I'm unsure of exactly where to start troubleshooting ??? Any advise on where to begin ?? Thanks, -S

Shelf List Report help
by Decka David 20 Jul '16

20 Jul '16

Dear Koha Community, Please can someone help to provide insight into creating shelf list report that includes the following; 1. Call Number 2. Title 3. Author 4. Barcode and 5. Cost This sort of information and report can help our library into doing simple stock-take for the total records after migration. Thank you Decka David
