Hi Mehvish, and welcome to Koha. I tried to explain MARC tags to my mother last night and she fell asleep. I think that being in a hospital emergency room late at night right after a hefty dose of Dilaudid may have had something to do with it... (She'll be okay, BTW.) MARC is complicated, but makes sense after a while. Think of all the various ways you can describe a book, musical recording, film, etc. Author, publisher, year published, length, ISBN, ISSN, call number... well, you get the idea. Now give each element a number. For example, the title goes in the 245 field. The main part of the title goes into 245$a. If the book is "Arnold. The tale of a chipmunk" the second part goes into 245$somethingelseicantrememberbutmigjtbeb. Do that for every element you want to describe and you got yourself a MARC record. You don't have to do original cataloging on everything; see OCLC and Z39.50. I'm typing this on my iPhone so I'll let someone else explain those--my thumb is getting weary. One thing I love about Koha is that it's infinitely customizable (yes, literally). If you want to add or change something, you can. All the real catalogers just turned green upon reading that, but you can. I'm away from work right now and I'm astonished that I can get email at all, but I can follow up next week if you want. customizing self check out cgi-bin/koha/sco/sco-main.pl help message
by schnydszch 16 Aug '16

I've been trying to figure out what to put in either SCOUserJS or OPACUserJS. Right now, instruction on how to use self check out can only be seen if the small help button is clicked. I'm trying to move the content of that in a more readable place, probably appending (?) in the main block (?), inspecting the elements, I see div class sco_entry, and I'm not sure that's the right selector in JQuery. Anybody who have tried putting instructions on how to use self check out that is not in SelfCheckHelpMessage which can only be read when the Help button is clicked? Can someone lead me on what to check? Or is it even possible? Appreciating your responses on my query. Hi Mehvish, MARC is, unfortunately, a really difficult data format to understand without any library science background. The numbers are fields like author name, title statement, and subject while the letters prefixed with some symbol (often $, but ‡ is used too) is a subfield. So a 245 title field has title subfield $a, subtitle subfield $b, author statement $c, etc. The cataloging editor does link to some documentation but you can use the OCLC or Library of Congress sites to read more about field meanings: https://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/ https://www.oclc.org/bibformats/en/about.html To answer your specific question about language codes, here's a quote from OCLC: - A single language code may be insufficient to describe the language of an item. If the item is multilingual or a translation, use multiple language codes. Enter the first code in Lang. Enter the multiple codes (including the first code) in field 041 (Language Code). - Use the predominant language code for a multilingual item that has two to six languages. If predominance cannot be determined, use the code that is first alphabetically. If the multilingual item has more than six languages, use the code for the language of the first title in field 245. If the item is multilingual with no predominant language and the cataloging institution has chosen not to specify a language, use code *mul*. https://www.oclc.org/bibformats/en/fixedfield/lang.html is the page where I found that. Hope that's helpful, good luck with your cataloging! Best, Eric Phetteplace Systems Librarian California College of the Arts libraries.cca.edu | vault.cca.edu 510.594.3660 2>/dev/null

Restrict access to SCO
by clint.deckard 14 Aug '16

14 Aug '16

I would like to restrict access to the Self Checkout to just a single ip address. I believe the Apache mod_authz_host module is the answer but am unsure just how to implement it in a multi-instance set-up. I would appreciate any tips on how to do it. Thank you, Clint Deckard.

Re: [Koha] unable to locate koha-common
by Mark Tompsett 14 Aug '16

Greetings, The instructions are very clear. Open a terminal window $ sudo ls [output cut – will need to type a password] $ echo deb http://debian.koha-community.org/koha stable main | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/koha.list [output cut] $ wget -O- http://debian.koha-community.org/koha/gpg.asc | sudo apt-key add - [output cut] $ sudo apt-get update [output cut ] $ sudo apt-get upgrade [output cut – clearly the answer is yes for an initial install] $ sudo apt-get clean [don’t think there is output, but it is cut, if there is any] $ sudo apt-get install koha-common Did any of these commands fail? Is the machine properly networked? The general goal of the Ubuntu package instructions (https://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/Koha_on_ubuntu_-_packages) was that a cut and paste (except for editing files) of the boxes (they are blue in my browser) should get you a working base install, from which you could tweak the apache settings latter if you wanted to go live to the internet. Perhaps you could explain exactly what steps you are taking?
