Im not asking for a one click install, far from it. What I am seeing is a broken installer, like I said Ive got further with attempting a manual install than I have using the installer. What I do need is a reliable install dependancy list in the manual, preferably backed up with some links to the perl modules, or an adequate description of each module so I can google it myself. I have made some notes while attempting the install over many days, here it is, Setting up mysql on RH9 (DRAFT) 1) Install the rpm. 2) a) Start at /etc/init.d/mysqld start b) service mysqld start 3) test with /usr/bin/mysqladmin version. # /usr/bin/mysqladmin version /usr/bin/mysqladmin Ver 8.23 Distrib 3.23.56, for redhat-linux-gnu on i386 Copyright (C) 2000 MySQL AB & MySQL Finland AB & TCX DataKonsult AB This software comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY. Because it requires some PARAMETERS setups (branches, budgets, z3950 server, MARC parameters tuning...) that MUST be done in order to see what Koha can do. and this task CAN'T BE AVOIDED. I think, it's the biggest caveat for Koha => helping setting up the software. If you require assistance with the installation, you are always free to message us or stop by the IRC channel; just this last week, I did a remote install via SSH. In the following information presented we are dealing with installers in a conceptual manner. any install dialog should query you item by item for setup options If there is no setup option given, or something incorrectly is input it should error check and query you for another correct option or give you the option not to set up. At the end of the instal, it should display a list of what options were set up and what they were set to pause and ask if you would like a printout of it. It should also save this information to a log file. OK now for today;s history lesson as I am not sure we have anyone on the list old enough to have used this old equipment..... I have to say this program is easily one of the worst to install Ive seen in 6 years of using open source. Usually such a multitude of errors and omissions has been reserved for commerical software, I find it very disappointing that koha is proving such a time waste. I have also found OS installs generally as simple and reliable as commercial stuff if not usually better, due usually to extream simplicity with no silly pretty pictures. I can live with a manual install, indeed so far a manual install has almost got me going where the auto install has failed badly. That's a fair point, but it reminds me of the old adage: "Good, cheap, fast: choose any two." But that's why there are IT people -- system administrators, in particular -- who bridge the gap between users and software developers/vendors by installing and maintaining software. And regarding open source, there are many reasons why installation is often harder than for a similar commercial application. But the blame for that should usually be shared between the open-source application and the open-source operating system it runs on. My own experience is that Debian GNU/Linux makes it much easier to install software than RPM-based distributions (such as Red Hat). But there's no free lunch: packaging software for Debian is harder because of the more stringent quality controls which are required. What does all this mean for Koha? Well, I'm not a Koha developer (not even a user yet, although I hope to persuade our library one day), but here are the options as I see them to make installation easier: 1. Provide Koha packaged for each OS you want to support (e.g. Red Hat, Debian, SuSE, etc., or Windows even). In some cases this might require also supplying the required supporting packages (which is what started this whole discussion thread, I believe). The packaging of Koha for different distributions could be contributed by people other than core development people if necessary. 2. Provide Koha packaged for a single Linux distribution, and possibly incorporated on a custom Linux install CD image. 3. Improve the install scripts to check for required Perl modules and install them from CPAN if necessary. Any of those would mean considerable work, but should improve the ease of installation. (If we ever moved to Koha, we'd probably be able to contribute Debian packages.) But I guess the main point I'm trying to make is that users need to be realistic in their expectations of the installation process. To quote (possibly misquote) Einstein, things should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler. The cpan issue is our proxy/firewall not related to cpan. My only option is to locate and download the modules by hand. Database.pm is indeed there, however the auto install script is failing as it cant find it, PATH issue? The CPAN issue you are facing is likely related to the terminal being utf-8 capable. The new CPAN config process (first time start up) asks a question about the language encoding that your terminal is capable of. Answer this question wrong and CPAN will not work, translating characters outside the ASCII range incorrectly. (Many CPAN authors have Euro characters in their packages in the author's name.) The correct answer to the config question (paraphrased here from memory): "Is your terminal UTF-8 capable?" is to answer in the affirmative for RH9 (and it seems the script is case-sensitive here as well). Further, CPAN helpfully advises you to upgrade the Bundle::CPAN. DON'T DO IT! ExtUtils::Makemaker will corrupt, rendering the CPAN tool useless. CPAN 1.6.1 is fine. Also of note, the Yaz z39.50 toolkit has a different set of installer files for RH9. There are four rpm files required, plus an optional src file. Get at least the four non-src rpms from: http://ftp.indexdata.dk/pub/yaz/RedHat9.X/ These must be installed before the Net::Z39.50 package can be built. Database.pm is a Koha package, part of the install. It will be located in the <koha>/C4 directory. This release add a lot of bugfixes, a 1st z3950 support, and a script for migration from previous ILS. FEATURE FREEZE ! --------- This version is the last version with new features before 2.0. Please, report bugs on bugs.koha.org, and feel free to fix them (through patch or cvs commit) PACKAGE NEEDED : --------- Update your MARC::Record to get the latest version (1.26). Koha won't work with old versions, and bulkmarcimport.pl need MARC::Batch.pm, whichi is recent. MARC::Record 1.25 works to, but reports hundred of warnings in error_log. pls upgrage to 1.26 ! DB modifications : --------- * the marc_breeding table has been modified. A row "encoding" varchar(40) has been added. It's used to manage character encoding. * the z3950_servers table has been modified. A row "syntax" varchar(40) has been added. It's used to manage character encoding. z3950 : --------- * the z3950 script in admin part of Koha has been fixed and can be used and translated. * z3950 cataloguing : when you reach the MARC-cataloguing screen, a new link appear : z3950 search. * If you click on this link, a popup appears, and the search begins. The window is refreshed every 2 seconds, until all servers answered. * The avaible records are shown in the popup. Click on the one you want, and... the popup closes and the biblio is copied in the cataloguing screen. This works ONLY IF the z3950 daemon is launched. It's located at $kohadir/scripts/z3950daemon/ * MODIFY the scripts to fit you directory structure. * Warning : due to a small bug, processqueue is in $kohadir/cgi-bin/z3950/ directory, not in the script one. * Start daemon in a non-X shell, or launch processqueue in a shell, and KEEP IT OPEN. iso2709 file import : --------- This tools is very important and was waiting by libraries that plans to migrate from a previous ILS. VERY IMPORTANT : BEFORE using this script, take care of your MARC parameters, and check them twice. If they are wrong, you will get wrong results... It's located (in CVS tree) at $koharoot/misc/bulkmarcimport.pl It loads an iso2709 file into the ACTIVE Database. My 1st tests on sample files shows it works quite fine. Feel free to try it. How it works ? enter ./bulkmarcimport in a console, and look. KNOWN LIMIT : If the barcode of an item does not exists, the scripts report an SQL error, and continue. BUT the corresponding item is not in the non-marc db, so it can't be requested or loaned. sample file : --------- The sample file has been removed from this release, as it's buggy (no MARC datas, making it quite useless) BUG FIXED (see bugs.koha.org for more infos) ========= A lot...
