Source and pricing of barcode scanners in .nz

Hi all My partner teaches at a small school in Hamilton, New Zealand, and we (me being the resident geek) are looking at Koha on Debian Linux for their library. We need to do a full costing for this exercise, and the only thing I don't have a ready source for is the barcode scanner part. Does anyone on the list have information on sources and pricing of barcode scanners in New Zealand? I've looked at *my* usual shopping haunts, but I guess barcode scanners aren't the sort of toy geeks usually like to play with ;) Many thanks Regards Richard

Wednesday, May 7, 2003 23:27 CDT Emil, I spent about a half hour searching for anything online that would give you an LC<-->UDC correspondence table. Nichts! I'll try some other sources tomorrow, but I kinda think Richard is right. If anybody out there in Koha-land is a member of the AUTOCAT listserv, this would make an excellent question for the community. Please be aware that ISBN does not guarantee an LC number has been assigned. If a book has an LCCN then its catalogue record has been completed (not all are always retrievable online, for some strange reason). ISBN numbers are allocated by national agencies but not by the CPSO or the Cataloguing divisions of LC. Richard is right in saying there would be cases of multiple mapping. Even looking at LC authority records, you'll see subject auth records with more than one number depending on what discipline is treating the topic under discussion. It would be a large task to convert between the schema, but depending on the size and nature of your collection there might be a way of bridging. Sears Subject Headings give DDC numbers and there are schema/works converting DDC<-->LC. It would depend on the subject terms used and how close they might be to the generalist terms in Sears. I think the word you are translating as "ethnicity" may be for "language". The idea of Virtual Shelves options, with Koha and other pricey library systems, is to give a patron the sense of what he or she would see on the same shelf (same general area) of the collection as the specific title sought. Fill a koha installation with very partial data...

I've collected some data from the books stored in a library of my organization. This data was managed with a simple db (microsoft works), and contain rather minimal data, like: 1) title 2) author 3) publisher 3) the series title (first volume, second volume, ...) 4) a field that can be considered like an item type 5) the ``location'', that i think i can consider like a branches With this simple list of books i can fill the koha database and start using it quickly?! Dear Colleagues, I have examined the records in more detail. It seems they all have ISBN, but not all have LOC numbers. I would think it is possible to use the ISBN to generate the LOC Number. Richard, This would be a large task. There is not a one to one correspondence between the schemes in every way. Some UDC classes will map to more than one LC class. In other cases, there may be UDC classes with no LC class. I do not know of a mapping between the two schemes. If they are using full bibliographic records then the LC call number may be in field 050. You could copy it from there to 852. That would take care of some of the records. Many LC subject authority records have a class number. You could search the 1st subject heading in the bib record and check the authority record to see if there is a class number. Hi, A client has asked us if it is possible to convert their existing UDC (Universal Decimal Classification) records to Library of Congress ones. Not being a librarian, I'm not really sure what is involved with either of these systems. If anyone been involved with such a project or could give me some pointers I would be most grateful.
