22 June 2005 The search syntax you are attempting to describe may not have a formalised name. It seems to have evolved into a common form with popular search tools rather than starting with a predefined name. I suspect that it started mostly with the implementation in one popular program. Find someone who really knows and get a reliable answer .It should be possible to wrap any syntax in a web form to reduce end user difficulty and possibly increase programmer difficulty. Serving the end user should be the goal without killing the programmer if possible. The problem with CQL and SRW is not enough server support yet as compared to Z39.50 unless everyone has secretly started offering services. Everyone cannot wait for everyone else if progress is to be made. CQL and SRW may supplant Z39.50 at some future time. The best use of Koha development time now should be considered. Question about searching

Many search systems seem to be evolving a common syntax, with double quotes around terms which should appear consecutively, a dash in front of a term to exclude it and a single-attribute search to have the attribute name and a colon in front of the term. For example: children subject:"social science" -author:Smith to find items about children with a subject of social science not authored by anyone called Smith. Is there a formal name or description for this syntax? I don't even know whether I should be reading language processing or information retrieval or information filtering literature to find this. Web searching has been useless, as usual for learning about searching! This arose at yesterday's search meeting. I hope the facilitator will organise a summary for koha-devel soon. I can see the attraction of CQL, especially for interserver communication, but I think it gets too hard too fast for general end-user searches. Look at BORROWERS especially if you want to know why your circulation won't work after update !!! * The installer is *wrong* on languages available. In this release, french & english are uptodate. Polish is uptodate for OPAC. Some other .po files are provided (chinese & italian, in $KOHAROOT/intranet/scripts/misc/translator/po) but they are not uptodate & need some work to be useable again. * The librarian interface is tested only with mozilla/firefox. Should work (partially) with IE. OPAC should work fine with any navigator. KNOWN BUG : ****** in MARC setup, if you have more than once a field mapped to a give authorised value, when you duplicate a field (whatever the field), all authorised values are defaulted to the same value. Bug still unexplained. Don't occur if you just modify a biblio, or when you have only once a given authorised value category. Bug detected by EMN, that has a "LANG" authorised value for both "text language" and "original text language". ======= DIFFS ======= Diff 2.2.2 => 2.2.3 ******************* DB MODIFS : *********** DB structure : none DB content : 4 systempreferences (see below) Koha opac stylesheets : some changes and at least 4 added entries. He then can choose the Hugo he want and run the search with what he has found (& other criteria as well if he want) * it's now possible to change the framework of a biblio * the overduenotice.pl script (that sends a mail to borrowers with late issues) contains the list of late items (title, author) === PARAMETERS === * a new button in marctagstructure.pl has been added : if selected, only actived fields/subfields are shown. Subfields used are in a summary just under the tag. Strongly limits the number of lines shown & more user friendly. * Adding 2 checks in marc parameter checking : only 1 MARC tag must be mapped to item tab and warning if there is NULL in a frameworkcode' === REPORTS === * in "borrowers with no issues" wizard, adding "without issues since" === OPAC === * basket / bookbag sending now has item list and an iso2709 file attached * links to reach suggestions & virtual shelves from any OPAC page * improvements in style sheet for better standard compliance. OPAC works perfectly under opera & konqueror. * added a systempref to define an alternate image as logo (for main page & top-left image on each page) * added a systempref to choose either to show or hide "lost" items. Note that "lost items" can be related to an authorised value list, so does not necessary mean "item definetly lost". Even here, some libraries want to see lost items, and some don't want. This parameter will make everybody happy ! * adding a "complete historyview" for subscription. Show year by year all issues, whatever the status (arrived, missing...). There appears to be a problem with adding biblios on a koha system installed on windows. The problem is caused by having no stopwords set. Chris I did not see your response to this problem, I too have the same issue and I cannot add a biblio to the system. This is a complete new system on Windows XP with Mysql 4 and Koha 2.2.2b The error is with Apache not finding the perl script? order of koha versions on sourceforge

Hi I went to see someone who'd accidentally downloaded the older version of Koha, I think because it's first in the list on the sourceforge site... http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=16466 Do we need both "koha' and "koha2.2" as what looks like seperate products? Could we not just have the 2.2 series under "koha" then it would go to the top? Starting with Koha

Greetings all. I was just asked by a friend to help set up her church's library with an ILS. They have a very limited budget, so they wanted to use a low-cost or free system. I recommended Koha, as from what I have seen it appears to be far and away the nicest Open Source ILS. Unfortunately, I have never used Koha, so I was wondering if there was anything anyone could suggest to familiarize myself with the system. I have not gotten a chance to install Koha yet, but I hope to do so this weekend. I guess what I'm really curious about is, what do people think is the best way to learn to use Koha, and what has worked for them? I have experience several years of experience as a programmer (primarily C/C++, but I do have some Perl knowledge), and I have worked in both cataloging and circulation departments at libraries, so hopefully there won't be too many concepts that I don't know. Just the mechanics of using the system. Thanks in advance. -- Jared Camins-Esakov P.S. Does anyone have any suggestions about appropriate pricing for consulting on a project like this?
