Summary of Koha Project Day

Hi all, Yesterday we had another Koha Project Day. Below is a summary of the goings on. We're thinking of moving the day of the week we do this on to give more folks the opportunity to get involved ... is there a day of the week that would work best for you and your koha project team? Let us know. Summary follows: We met some new folks, so extending a welcome to martinmorris, who's working on configuring Koha; and thanks to jaron for some support help on that front. Dewey was up to his usual tricks, and we fed him multitudinous botsnacks :-) Slef worked on improvements to the installation process, thanks for the commits! Tina and I picked up some books on interface design and started learning about typical processes for designing application interfaces (not just websites), with the intent to improve the 3.0 interfaces before the release. I also installed plone and played around with some workflows for managing users, groups, and roles. We discovered that, like Koha, plone is quite powerful, but requires plenty of customization :-) Chris spent most of the day fixing bugs in HEAD and commiting fixes to the CSS for Russ. Chris and I also spent some time refining our plan for moving to Git. Russ played around with plone, learned up on the plone help center product, moving some content into a plone install to see how it might work (see http://new.koha.org:8080/koha/author/rwgarlick for some of he content created. The Plone Help Center product looks like the goods for Koha documentation, but there are still some kinks to iron out before we have it going properly. Russ also did some testing of HEAD (version 3), in particular fixed a bug with the san-op.css which was obscuring the secondary navigation. Reported a few other bugs that Chris is working on. Ryan and Mason were super busy getting ready for a golive that happened this morning, so they opted out this time. I'm sure they'd rather be working on project stuff, just don't tell the clients :-). Sara spent some time updating lists of koha users found in the wild (they're everywhere! :-)). The best lists now are libwebcats and the Koha wiki, but we're working on a new worldmap that we hope will launch within the next coupla months. Reports Documentation...

This is more of a "koha workday" request more than anything... What I (as the IT admin dude, NOT a librarian) would LOVE to have, is some sort of documentation on building custom reports, some simple examples...what tables/fields are most usable in the DB... It would be really trivial(IMO) to create some custom SQL queries as requested by the Librarian, when they ask "How come there isn't a report that does XYZ?" Then again, this might already be out there(along with a bunch of reports and I just haven't found them yet) --Huck

Hi Everyone! Ive just installed the newest version of Koha and ive created a MARC Tag that is particularly important to my library, but I don't know how to get it to display in the user interface's record. At the moment the user has to look at the MARC coding to find the information which isnt ideal! Does anyone know how you determine what fields you show as part of a record? Small Rural School Seeks Advice

Hi All, I am a teacher at a small rural school located in Mildmay, Ontario, Canada. Our library is back in the stone-age in terms of automation....i.e. there is none...even the old card catalogue is way out of date with many books not added since the late 80's. I have a Pentium III Netvista computer that I am interested in using for library automation. I was looking at installing Ubuntu server on the machine....along with LAMP...and Koha. I would need to get a barcode reader. What else do I need? What other suggestions do you have in helping our school modernize our library? Any advice you can give is appreciated. Thanks in advance. Alexandria vs. Koha

Hello, Our school is looking to pay a consultant to compare two library software systems, Koha and Alexandria (http://www.goalexandria.com/) I was wondering if anyone on this list has experience with both systems. I know about both systems and have had some experience with both (mostly Koha), but our school administration would like to have a third party outside opinion in addition to mine. I saw some posts earlier that talked about migrating from Alexandria to Koha. If anyone has done that and can confidently give a summary of Alexandria and Koha, you could earn some extra cash. Our school computer lab is all eMacs with OS X 10.4. We had purchased Alexandria in 2005 and also have Koha 2.2.9 installed on a Ubuntu linux (PowerPC) apple hardware computer. thanks for your time and I look forward to your responses, Matthew Metzger

Character set testing

I've just converted my Koha install to use UTF-8. With so many pieces of the puzzle needing to be properly configured (MySQL, Apache, Koha, web browser, etc) I'd like a way to test that things are working properly. I could use some suggestions for some basic tests. I currently don't have any records requiring UTF-8. Can someone send me a test marc21 file I could try importing with bulkmarcimport (which I haven't used yet) and make sure it displays properly. Pretty much all my records come from Z3950 searches so I should probably check that too. Can someone point me to a Z3950 Server and record that also has a web interface so I can compare the records imported? Thanks, Mike D.

Koha Project Day Summary

Hi gang, We had another Koha Project Day yesterday. Here's a summary of what we did: Chris worked on a few more unit tests, finishing off the tests for C4::Date. Quite a bit of wiki cleaning and thinking/talking about how to use git in the project. Of course, chris also blogged about his koha project day: http://blog.bigballofwax.co.nz/articles/2007/06/25/koha-project-day-2 Russ worked on the styles of the supplemental sites koahdocs.org, translate.koha.org, contribs.koha.org; took a look at Plone as a possible replacement for our current koha.org site; started doing some bug reports for version 3, and got selenium going: http://bugs.koha.org/cgi-bin/bugzilla/attachment.cgi?id=109 Mason did more bugzilla updates, and started on the process of updating default templates in rel_2_2 so they will be suitable for a 2.2.10 release Josh worked with Chris on git, and added some documentation (partial still) on how to use it for the Koha project. REports How do they work

Dear Koha Lists I am having a slight problem with reports in KOHA. Namely most of the report do not work. In particular NONE of the Wizards work. I have tried adding records doing anything. Any wizard I click on it can not display any data What so EVER!!! This is for Borrowers, Aquisition, Circulation and that last category. Some reports do work like Most Issueing Borrowers, however many do not!!! CAn anyone enlighten me. We are primarily using Koha 2.25 but I have upgraded my testbed to 2.28 and nothing seems to change PLEAZE reply to jimfor(a)optusnet.com.au and this address with the Subject KOHA I only get dial up access once a month so it may be hard to find your email. Also I am sending soon a revision of the Barcode generator. I have done one that can be used with much less librarys and prints accurately (ie 1mm is 1mm not 1px).
