Reserving items with a specific "need by" date in Koha
by Laura Bucaro 26 Mar '10

26 Mar '10

Hello Koha group! I'm a solo librarian at the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. I'm thinking of using Koha for a library cataloging/reserves/serials solution. The one thing that I think makes my library unique is that we lend training materials and often these are borrowed by training officers who have to preschedule their training. Thus, we need a system that will allow the users to specify the date they will receive the item. Right now we use a clunky Access DB which works with our website. Users can look up an item online, then use an online form to send a request with two dates (1st choice and 2nd choice). The system then sends me a reservation email, I go into the system, see if the item is available for when they need it, reserve the item for the user if it's available, then send them a new email with a reservation confirmation. I won't go on about this process, but as you can tell it is very labor intensive. I was hoping to find an open source option to use once we stop using Office altogether. I can tell Koha would be good for setting up user profiles, cataloging, serials acquisitions, etc. My question today is, I see Koha has a reservation module but can the user specify when they get the item? Any help, or ideas, anyone out there can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, in advance! Re: [Koha] Koha Services and Support

Dear Karen, Please desist from e-mailing and calling me. This is the 3rd message I have received from your company this week alone! The Koha mailing list is to be used for the free and open exchange of advice and ideas between Koha users. Personally, I do not think it is right for you to trawl this mailing list for potential clients of your fee-based services, although other members of the list might disagree. It may be appropriate for you to post an occasional (!) informational message about your company and its services to the mailing list, but to pester individual members of the Koha mailing list user community with endless emails and phone messages is unacceptable. Re: [Koha] Journal articles
by Elaine Bradtke 26 Mar '10

We're looking at analyticals, but haven't implemented it yet. Still cleaning up the raw data for import (I'm only working on this 2 days a week). We'll be using the 773 field for parent items. As we've got lots of records for journal articles, and conference papers in proceedings, it will in the end be an important part of our catalogue. But I'm going to start with the importing the less complicated stuff (books) first. Preliminary tests seemed to indicate that it will work, though I never did manage to get the linking to function. That was several months ago though. Music notation or printed music - how to make it obvious
by Elaine Bradtke 26 Mar '10

26 Mar '10

For some reason, in all the years that our little library has been in existence, no one has bothered to specify when a publication is primarily music notation. I'm changing this as we migrate to Koha (nearly half our stuff is music notation), but before I take the plunge I need to think about how it will work, and what it will look like. It's my understanding that Koha stores Leader information, but does nothing with it, is this correct? I want something that will show up clearly, is easily spotted. Not buried somewhere in the physical description or down in a notes field. I'm disinclined to use general material designations, but that could be one way. The other thought was item type. Collections seem less intuitive somehow, and as we have lots of special collections which might contain individual publications of music notation, I'm not sure if that works. Anyone with experience in this? Thanks -- Elaine Bradtke EFDSS

Fine Rules according to days
by nitesh rijal 26 Mar '10

26 Mar '10

Dear All. I have a problem with managing the fines according to the days loaned. Here is what I need Type of book Amount per day Patrons Days Reference NRs. 5 Students, Staff, Teachers Over Night (24 hr) Short Term NRs. 2 Students, Staff, Teachers 2-7 Days Text Book NRs. 1 Student and Staff 15 Days Teachers 1 month What should I do to incorporate this? Should I use the due date field manually at the time of issue, or is there any better way. Also, how do I change the default currency from $ to NRs. I have made the value of NRs. as 1.00 and $ as 70.00 but still the fine rules box shows $ in the field. How do I change that? Please Help. KohaCon : Auckland to Wellington by road.
by hfields19＠gmail.com 26 Mar '10

26 Mar '10

Hi all, I have been putting together a bit of a plan for escorting KohaCon attendees down to Wellington from Auckland via Rotorua. My thinking so far: Friday 22nd October: arrive in Auckland, dinner at Viaduct somewhere. Stay night in Auckland. Saturday 23rd October: Leisurely drive down to Rotorua (about 3 hours drive). Thermal pools etc. Evening event at Te Puia: http://www.tepuia.com/things-to-see-and-do/te-po.html Sunday drive down to Wellington via Huka Falls, Taupo, Gravity Canyon for the idiots who want to bungy or do something else insane involving great heights and high speeds: http://www.gravitycanyon.co.nz/ (about 5 hours driving in total) Evening in Wellington ready for KohaCon next day. Vans are proving problematic but big cars are about $150 - 200 a day (seat 4) . Accommodation say $150-$200 a night Te Po $99 (night only) or $130 (day as well) Petrol say $120 a car So how does this sound? I am happy to fly up and escort people down. The driving will be easy for people happy too drive. Cheers Jo.

Duplicate Records Created When Importing Large Batch of, Records into Koha
by Frances Sandeman 25 Mar '10

25 Mar '10

Hi, Thankyou all for your help and answers. I can use these as future references. The problem was clicking on the import button *more than once. * My work colleague didn't think anything was happening as it was taking a while to import the records because it was quite a large batch so she *clicked on the import button more than once *which created duplicates half way through the import process. It was confusing because whilst I was editing and checking these records there was only one bib record for each duplicate and the correct number of records had been imported. When it came time to revert the records,* I clicked on the revert button more than once.* When our IT cleaned up and reindexed the system and we started the process again it worked properly as we only clicked on the import and revert button ONCE! Problem Solved :-) Regards *Frances Sandeman* Library Technician On 24/03/2010 11:13 PM, koha-request(a)lists.katipo.co.nz wrote: > Send Koha mailing list submissions to > koha(a)lists.katipo.co.nz > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://lists.katipo.co.nz/mailman/listinfo/koha > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > koha-request(a)lists.katipo.co.nz > > You can reach the person managing the list at > koha-owner(a)lists.katipo.co.nz > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of Koha digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. serials subscription fields
by Kurt Bodling 25 Mar '10

25 Mar '10

I'm new at this Koha stuff, and we're still fiddling with a test catalog using version 3.01.00.061 We barcode individual issues of journals when they arrive, but I'm trying to de-clutter the display of all those item records - one for each barcode - under the bibliographic record for the serial title. So ... I'm wondering about inserting the barcode in the "Notes" field when I "receive" [check in] an issue. That would hide all the item records under the "Subscriptions" tab rather than showing them on the initial bibliographic record screen in the OPAC. But I believe we would want to be able to search for those barcodes from time to time. So I what I want to know is: is that "Notes" field I referred to searchable, or can it be made so, in the staff mode? Thanks much! Kurt A. Amazon enhanced content issues - similar items displaying in staff client but not opac
by Meghan Jones 25 Mar '10

25 Mar '10

Hello all, We're running Koha 3.01.00.061 and I am having issues with adding enhanced content from Amazon - book jackets are fine on both the staff client and the opac but so far I am having no luck getting similar items to appear on the opac record even though I can see them on the record when viewed through the staff client. The fact that they're appearing on the staff client indicates that it is not an issue with the private key requirement and I've checked that I've switched on all the relevant preferences re: the opac display in enhanced content and opac. We have a collection that is primarily grey literature, so most of our stock will not be found on Amazon but where we do have that crossover, it would be quite nice to show the opac users which books are similar. Any thoughts?
