Hey Folks, Is there a list of features that will be available with 3.2? I'm the librarian type and a simple list will do. I did find a partial list in a news post on the koha-community.org web site, but I would like to see a list of all of the new features. Thanks! LibLime Thoughts from a Librarian
by Lee Phillips 30 Apr '10

30 Apr '10

Koha Friends, We are a Koha library and I am just a librarian. We migrated with LibLime in 9/09 and I was one of LL's biggest fans. One of the things LL did right was allow libraries to decide for themselves on install and config issues. We are self-hosted (thank God, in hindsight) and we have customized a little. We liked having developers that we could go to to get our needs met for our installation and contributed our customizations (Overdrive SIP) to the community (except it is in the manual on Koha.org. I think). When the craziness started almost a year ago I was sad to see something with such potential crash and burn (LL and Koha-Community). It made me physically ill. Now we have PTFS. I guess the money is in creating one hosted product with one solution so that it is economical to manage in "the cloud". I am sure other librarians feel as I do that I like having my "stuff" on this box right here (pointing under desk). I won't even presume to understand the complexities of "taking Koha to the next level" in the PTFS world but it is a different animal with the same genus as Koha - Community. As Nicole Engard tweeted, it is not even the same concept of Open Source. I will take the higher ground and say I wish PTFS well as they create some hybrid version of Koha (forked code). Librarians stake their careers on the concept of free information and universal access to the information. Open Source = universal access to information for me. Maybe the community should start thinking of a way to help those who thought they were getting FOSS Koha migrate out of LEK and Koha Express. Maybe a vendor could provide that service? I can tell you if I was in their shoes that's what I would be looking to do. I am just saying, its not enough to just move on as the community. There are some casualties from this deal and I hope some one offers a solution to help them back to where they thought they would be, a part of the Koha-community. I am glad (tickled pink actually) my library is part of the community. Cheers and see ya in NZ! Beer and Pizza on me. Lee Phillips

LibLime Thoughts
by Kelly Sherman 30 Apr '10

LibLime Thoughts LibLime (a division of PTFS) is disappointed to learn that the HLT Koha Committee has chosen to cancel our scheduled conference call. We thought that we would discuss issues important to the ongoing development of Koha and that we would form a partnership that would permit us to work together globally to build a better open source ILS solution for libraries. LibLime wants to assume the best and understands that the HLT Committee is new to business matters, acquisitions, and financial transactions on the scale required to move the Koha project to the next level. Perhaps the newness of these experiences has resulted in their one-sided point of view; their conflicting and inaccurate web posts; and their decision to participate in a conference call, only to decline it the next day. The PTFS acquisition of LibLime *will* take the Koha project to the next level by utilizing agile software development and systems engineering methodologies. Working closely with libraries, this effort will result in advancing Koha into the ultimate open source ILS solution. We will support Koha through the koha.org website and we will continue to work towards our goal of developing and deploying a true next generation system that manages both print and digital collections in a single application. We are asking for participants from Koha libraries that may want to partner with us to maintain documentation, design new development features, catalog bug issues, and promote Koha successes world-wide. If you are ready to help build a better Koha please contact ksherman(a)ptfs.com. Seeking comments on "Return all" function
by Owen Leonard 30 Apr '10

30 Apr '10

Nicole reports in Bug 4416 (http://bugs.koha.org/cgi-bin/bugzilla3/show_bug.cgi?id=4416) "On the patron record the renew all and the return all buttons are very close together and librarians are accidentally clicking return all (as I have on many occasions) - can we put more space between them - or right align one and left align the other so they're far apart and require reading?" I agree, and my librarians have already had me hide the button in our system. My take on it: I'd like to [officially] get rid of the "Return all" button altogether. Returning all items is a step which one wouldn't take lightly or even regularly. Since the interface has a means of selecting all checkboxes in the "Check in" column, removing the "Return all" button wouldn't eliminate the means of doing so, it would just require more deliberation. That seems appropriate. Does anyone object? Thanks, Owen -- Web Developer Athens County Public Libraries http://www.myacpl.org

ALA meeting of Koha users
by David Schuster 30 Apr '10

30 Apr '10

Seems like only yesterday people were gathering in Boston! If we don't act now we won't be gathering! ALA is in Washington DC June 25-29. I would love to get together with some of you if possible to talk about KUDOS and any other topic that might be relevant. You don't have to be a customer of a particular vendor just show up. First things first we are looking for a place and time to meet! It would be best if we could meet on Sunday or Monday if possible. Does anyone have connections with the DC public Library? I see the main branch is near by, but all of the rooms are booked... hmmm wonder why... Otherwise we could meet at a restaurant or where ever to at least have some together time face to face. Looking forward to hearing from everyone! I actually will get to go to ALA meetings now as I am part of the AASL affiliate assembly!! Thanks! Barcode scanner, labels, and receipt printer
by J M 30 Apr '10

30 Apr '10

Hello, everyone, A pleasure to join this listserv! I'm using Liblime's Koha Express and now I'm about to start shopping for a barcode scanner, a receipt printer, and preprinted barcode labels. Does anyone have any advice/suggestions? I would like to know other people's experiences, particularly with Koha Express. The Koha version I have is 3.00.02.012. Any specific scanner to get or not get? Any specific receipt printer to get or not get? Should I order standard 14-digit labels? Are they compatible with Koha? Anything else I should know? Many thanks in advance, JM

A way to nip any PTFS threats of totalitarianism in the bud is for a group of people to get together and just spew out for free what PTFS seeks to capitalize on... Everyone gains! well except perhaps PTFS who seems to be sticking their first foot out an a nasty manner... oh well! Ed# In a message dated 4/29/2010 10:12:09 P.M. US Mountain Standard Time, dschust1(a)tx.rr.com writes: Two things. With the blog post on the koha-community site and this email and comments from the community I am not seeing two parties trying to work together. PTFS - is a company and has run on a corporate model - they "purchased" assets so they need to decide how to handle those assets. In that same concept the community WANTS some of those assets so I don't think these discussions on the list are going to help us gain what we all want. A system we can all work together to make better. If all of these people were sitting in a room together they would have been able to work this out, but due to distance and time communication is harder to achieve. >From my understanding the HLT committee had agreed to a phone call which is more along the standard communication in which PTFS was comfortable but backed out. At which point things started to degrade and positions started to be posted on the web to the community. I know this doesn't look like a business transaction, but for PTFS it is and that is how they have known how to do business in the past. They will need to become comfortable in talking and working with the community but it can't happen over night. The LibLime purchase has only been about a month or a little more, we need to work together to resolve our differences to come to a common understanding. I hope both parties read this and can pull back rethink how this will be approached and try again. We are all very attached to this emotionally so we need to be careful on how we react to postings and emails in a professional manner. I would hate to see this return to the situation we had 8 months ago. At least PTFS was willing to talk with HLT which is more than we had gotten previously. [Fwd: Printing Patron Cards with Names]
by Rachel Hamilton-Williams 30 Apr '10

30 Apr '10

Hi John, This is a great question for the Koha mailing list (I personally don't know the answer), but I do know that others have patron cards so perhaps they can tell you how they do it, and whether it's from within Koha or some other way. Cheers Rachel -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Printing Patron Cards with Names Date: Tue, 27 Apr 2010 20:49:27 +0200 From: John <john.winter(a)neverseen.ch> To: <koha-owner(a)lists.katipo.co.nz> Hello, I try to print patron Cards with koha3.00.06 Label creator Tool. I searched how to print the cards with the name of the patron on it. But I did not find the function to do it. I searched the internet and wiki. But couldn't find any hint to do this. Is there a possibility to do that or where can I configure it? I am new to Koha. Perhaps I did not see the function? The Format of the Card should be like this: |-------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Libraryname | | Firstname + Surname of Patron | | | | Barcode | | | |-------------------------------------------------------------------- | Thanks a lot for your help. RE LibLime Thoughts
by Don 30 Apr '10

30 Apr '10

Hi As the director of a company that supports and develops many FLOSS products, including Koha and as the President of the New Zealand Open Source Society, I would just like to make a few points on this topic. Koha is a project that was started by a very small community in New Zealand. That community donated Koha, a gift, to the world. That the world wide community has been able to extend Koha fantastically, organise itself and sustain itself is testament to the vision and ideals that were behind the original gift. Indeed, for potential users of Koha the community strength and resilience should be a major attraction. This resilience is more important in the medium and long term than the technology itself. The GNU General Public Licence that Koha uses guarantees that users of the software will always have their rights and freedoms protected and sustained. These cannot be captured by single entities or individuals such as Catalyst or Liblime or even the company originally developed and still supports the technology, Katipo. As a businessman, seeing the Koha community take such interest in their software gives me confidence that it is a system worth supporting and investing in. I know many other businesses round the world feel the same. As long as there is a vibrant and demanding community of users there will be many businesses vying to offer their support services. If that community fades away then so will the support. LibLime have been, and hopefully will continue to be, a leading member of the Koha community, but it will have to be on the community's terms, not someone's outdated ideal of a business model. As Kiwi I am proud of HLT, Katipo and Koha. As a businessman I am confident in the sustainability and future of the software.
