Koha OverDrive and SIP2
by Josh Westbrook 04 May '10

04 May '10

Is there anyone on the list that is using Koha with OverDrive and SIP2? If so, would you be willing to share your experience setting it up? We will be setting up OverDrive soon and connecting with SIP2 is an option that we are looking into. We are on LLEK - but any information would be helpful. Fwd: Migrating data from 2.2.9 to 3.00.X: item problems solved!
by Magdalena Söderqvist 04 May '10

04 May '10

Hi again, this is just to finally say a big thank you to Koustubha Kale and others for helping us solve our item problems - it worked excellently. We just had to wait a while for our IT-guy to come back and export the altered file! As the solution was sent to me off list I include it in this email for future reference. Thanks again, Sincerely, Magdalena Söderqvist SIPRI Library ----- Forwarded Message ----- From: "Koustubha Kale" <kmkale(a)anantcorp.com> To: "Magdalena Söderqvist" <soderqvist(a)sipri.org> Sent: Tuesday, 20 April, 2010 13:36:09 GMT +01:00 Amsterdam / Berlin / Bern / Rome / Stockholm / Vienna Subject: Re: [Koha] Migrating data from 2.2.9 to 3.00.X: item problems Hi, Why not keep it on the list? Some one else having same issues may learn.. If that's the case I suggest you break the marc file into .MRK using markbreaker in MarcEdit. Then save it as "marc utf-8 text file .mrk8" Then use your favorite text editor to correct the errors. ( HINT : You might see two lines for 952 tag in marcedit and your text editor. It needs to be one line with proper subfields) Reopen the corrected file with marcedit and compile it into .mrc. Import the new mrc into koha with Stage records.. and Manage staged records etc. Run rebuild db etc... Let me ( and koha list ;) ) know how it goes. I hope you don't might my writing to you off the list. You were right: looking at the import file in a text program reveals end of line characters within the 952 field. My followup question is: do you have any suggestions as to how to get rid of it? We've been using MarcEdit for other things - could we use that somehow or is there another way/another program? Reg the barcodes: yes we can assign new codes, and we will. I was just trying to find a way around editing 2800 records by hand, but that was just pure laziness, nothing else... I know the latest stable release is 3.00.05, but our IT-guy got a little carried away (and then he went on vacation)! The upgrade however solved a major problem with blank record pages in the opac, but we still have some remaining problems we need help solving. Others have reported similar problems but I haven't been able to figure out how their problems were actually solved, hence this appeal. Problem 1: When importing a normal biblio with only one item to the new version, the one item is split up in two, with Shelf location on one row and Barcode on another. The rest of the item specific information is hidden. If I edit the record and delete one of the items and move the barcode to the remaining item, all the hidden information shows up. So the question is, what is wrong? We use 952c for Shelving location and 952p for Barcode. Also, we don't use actual barcodes, but instead use the barcode field for our accession numbers, for example G10/123 or 10/124. Problem 2: We occasionally catalogue chapters as separate biblios, and when doing so, we have used the same barcode/accession no. for each chapter belonging to the same book. It worked fine in 2.2.9, but since 3.0.x does not seem to accept duplicate barcodes this has now become a problem. Would it be possible/complicated/stupid? to alter the bulcmarcimport.pl to make it allow import of biblios with duplicate barcodes? Is there a better solution? Any help you can offer is much appreciated. Jumpng checkbox selections in Advanced Search
by Stacy Pober 03 May '10

03 May '10

The selected checkbox for "Limit to any of the following" in Advanced mode jump around when users navigate to the page by using the "back button". Their initial checkbox selections always jump six boxes down in our catalog. Example: <http://man.waldo.kohalibrary.com/cgi-bin/koha/opac-search.pl?expanded_optio…> In Advanced check the limit box for Curriculum Collection Type in a keyword. Hit Search. After viewing result page, hit back button or backspace. Now, the checkbox for Curriculum Collection is blank, but the one for Floor 4 is checked. It seems that if you search the public catalog in Advanced Search mode and choose any one of the first 11 Collection Codes listed under "Limit to any of the following", do a search and return to this Advanced Search, a new code will be selected. This may have something to do with the way our user interface is configured. I don't think it is happening in other LLEK catalogs. The checkboxes always jump 6 spaces. Since we have the last five codes set to be invisible to users, the "jumping" only occurs with the first 11 choices. This is a little confusing. Users who do not re-examine the checkboxes carefully not realize that they are now doing a search with a different limit. I would prefer that users who return to the Advanced Search screen using "back" to either find no checkbox limit selected or else find the same checkbox selected that they used for their search. Either of those behaviors would make sense, but the one where there is a new limit that seems to be selected by the system itself is confusing. When we first got set up with Koha, somone with Liblime helped us set up some javascript in Advanced Search that hides some of our CCODES from patrons. So I strongly suspect this his may be something we can change ourselves in the Admin settings, but I do not know how to do it. Can someone help me with this? We're using LLEK, but I suspect that this particular problem has to do with the customization that was done with our user interface for the Advanced Search page rather than a LLEK feature per se. Koha 3 very slow and cannot place hold
by Marty 02 May '10

02 May '10

I don't know if anybody else has this issue, but my librarians are all complaining about the speed of Koha 3. If we enter the name of a patron it takes a minimum of 6 seconds for that person to appear on screen, or people with similar names. Actually, these 6 seconds seem to be needed for almost any operation. Queries straight in mysql are almost instantaneous. It is much, much slower than Koha 2.2.9. We are running Debian Lenny, Koha 3.00.05 with Zebra on a Pentium 4 box. Any ideas to make it faster? Would it be a hardware issue? The other thing is that it won't place holds. I can click on "place a hold" and then it sits there forever, doing nothing. The funny thing is that on a parallel system (on a Pentium 3) it works fine, even from a backup made from the Pentium 4 box, with the --add-drop-table option. Am I missing something? Marty

Introducing myself, advice please
by Lynn Pryor 02 May '10

02 May '10

I am Lynn Pryor. I am a retired librarian (Australian), presently spending three months in Tanzania, assisting in the library of St John's University of Tanzania (SJUT). The University opened less than three years ago, so the library is struggling to maintain services to 3000 very enthusiastic students. A month ago I arrived to find no catalogue, the shelves in disarray, etc. They need a lot of help. One of my first tasks was to find, set up and have installed a LMS suitable for this setting. A colleague in Melbounre, who herself has been using KOHA for only a matter of months, recommended that I try KOHA. I have waited a month but yesterday a computer was delivered to my desk with KOHA installed. I sat down to assess it in order to determine that this is the right system for us here. I like the look and I enthusiastically set out to set Parameters, before attempting to create any records. However - and here's my first problem for which I seek a solution via the koha list - as I entered information and clicked Enter or Submit, the next screen required me to login again! This happened every time I proceeded to a next page/screen! After about 30 times of this I was about ready to scream!!! I sought out the IT fellows who had installed the program from the downoad. One of them assured me that this is normal, it's the way the program is written. I cannot believe this. Can someone in koha land please resolve this for me? I need to decide by Monday whether to go ahead with KOHA, as I have only 9 weeks remaining here and cannot afford to waste time playing around with programs! Please HELP!
