Introduction / Hiding specific item types
by Mirko 17 Sep '10

17 Sep '10

Hello everybody, I've been reading this list for 9 months now and learned a lot here. I'm in the process of managing the migration to Koha for a media centre/ library at a university in Berlin/ Germany. The facility's specific purpose is to provide material (print, audio, video, software) for learners of foreign languages. I have several problems to solve and I hope you can help me a little. It may be useful to say that I'm more of a tech-person in this context, not a librarian. The first problem I would like to address is the following: Among other things we have an inventory of old TV recordings. We are obliged by our legal department to not show OPAC entries of these to the general public -- meaning our (old) OPAC is restricted to the university network, making us invisible to everybody outside of that network. It would be great to find a way around this with Koha. Is it possible to show some specific items in the OPAC only a) to people of specific patron groups or b) to people of a specific IP range while invisible to others (and while all other items are visible to everyone)? I've read about shadowing, but I understand it hides items from the OPAC completely, showing them only in the staff client. That is not what we need, people coming to our facility are supposed to find everything in the OPAC. Is there some other way, like hiding a complete category of items? Thank you for reading all this, Mirko

Invitation to join KUDOS
by Ian Walls 17 Sep '10

17 Sep '10

Everyone, The KUDOS board is inviting all North American institutions with an installation of Koha to become a member. If you join now as a charter member, there will be no registration fee through 2011 (since we don't yet have non-profit status, nor an agreed-upon due structure). If you wish to become a member of KUDOS, we ask that you fill out this simple online form<https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?hl=en&pli=1&formkey=dG84YjZKbHZPQV…> . Of course, we are looking for volunteers to do all kinds of things, so please check off the categories in which you are interested. Positions on the board are available! Once we have a good base of interest, we can all begin moving forward with determining how KUDOS can serve the greater Koha community. Thank you for your interest. Ian Walls (Acting) President, KUDOS

I welcome John Yokley's statement calling for steps to reduce divisiveness and for creation of a foundation to hold all Koha trademarks and domain names as a very positive step. However his specific proposal is just a starting point for discussion and I agree entirely with the suggestions for an entirely open discussion by all parties of approaches to a foundation or other umbrella Koha organization that will indeed not be dominated by any single company or organization. I encourage John or Patrick Jones to attend KohaCon as an ideal step toward open discussion. However, I am distressed by a few responses that seem personally hostile. We like to speak about the Koha "community." A community is better served through reasonable discussion and exchange of views and I would like to suggest that it will be more productive and professional to seek the high road in our postings to the list. Hi all, KohaCon is the ideal place for a good solid discussion around the issue and it is only weeks awaynow. If PTFS are truly committed to being a part of the Koha community then It is critical that they get down here and start participating in the discussion as equals rather than tell us all the way its going to be. It should very easy to have an irc channel on a large screen throughout and people paraphrasing the converstaion back onto irc channel and feeding and vice versa. Also, the entire Koha Subcommittee of HLT will be in attendance at that meeting and we have scheduled a meeting after the conference once we have all heard the discussion and any resolution on moving forward. cheers Jo.
