NZ news article about Koha
by Robin Sheat 27 Sep '10

I haven't seen this show up on the list here, some people may find it interesting: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=10675810 "International flagbearer for open-source movement began with a librarian's quest to save money. "Koha, the application that put New Zealand's open-source software community on the world map, turns 10 next month. From its beginnings as a management system for Horowhenua's Levin, Foxton, Shannon and Tokomaru libraries, Koha has spread as far afield as the United States, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East." -- Robin Sheat Catalyst IT Ltd. ✆ +64 4 803 2204 GPG: 5957 6D23 8B16 EFAB FEF8 7175 14D3 6485 A99C EB6D

Fwd: Indexing (or sorting) mystery

If it works I have a patch that should fix the relevance ranking for you. Basically it isnt actually applying the ranking at the moment, at least thats how my test system is behaving. Chris

Indexing (or sorting) mystery
by Amy Schuler 24 Sep '10

Hello, We are testing Koha v. 3.01.00.145 before going live, when someone pointed out to me that search results are oddly sorted at best. In the searching sys preferences, the database is set to search by relevance (A-Z) in both the OPAC and staff interface. We are using Zebra and it is set to search by relevance. Here are some odd examples of so-called relevance ranking: When I perform a generic library catalog search (not selecting by field) for the known title phrase "Cool It", the results are an odd mix of items. First is "Atlas of breeding birds in New York State", which shares nothing in common with the book "Cool It". Nothing in the title, subtitle, subjects, etc. of "Atlas" resembles anything like the phrase, "Cool It". Now, when I perform a search by title for "Cool It" I receive two hits - the first is for a book about microbe-vector interactions (again, no reason for match) and the second hit is for the correct book. It is bad enough that the general search is so far off, but for the fielded search it seems like entering the exact title should return that title as the first hit, rather than further down the list? I have similar examples of this sort of thing. I wonder how to (a) fine tune the general search (keyword mapping, other ideas?) and/or (b) at least change the default search field to TITLE, if I cannot increase precision of the general search. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks! Amy Schuler Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies

Images in Patron Cards
by Scot Ausborn 24 Sep '10

24 Sep '10

Hi - I've been having trouble getting an uploaded logo image to print on the patron cards. I can print cards with text and barcodes just fine. However, adding our Institute's logo renders a PDF that cannot be opened by Acrobat Reader. Message states that the "File is damaged and cannot be repaired." I've made sure that ImageMagick and PerlMagick are both installed and configured with support for GIF, JPG, & PNG files. I've tried with all three types, keeping the images well under 500k and at the recommended 300ppi setting. The actual size of the image is also a 1:1 correspondence to what I've set in the layout. Any ideas on what else I might try? I've attached the logo. Thanks much, Scot Ausborn Library Director, Institute for Psychoanalysis (312) 922-7474 x319

New addition to AUR Koha catalog
by Weinheimer Jim 24 Sep '10

24 Sep '10

All, I just did something that is interesting. I've done it on my blog and it is easy enough to implement now. I have added the Google Translate widget into the catalog, both on my main page, and in the individual records. On the main page, http://www.galileo.aur.it/cgi-bin/koha/opac-main.pl, it takes a second for the widget to load from Google, but when you do, just select the language, and watch. It's pretty amazing! I also did it from each record: e.g. http://www.galileo.aur.it/cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?bib=6084 The instructions are in Google. It's pretty much just copy and paste, so it just takes a few seconds. http://translate.google.com/translate_tools Jim James Weinheimer j.weinheimer(a)aur.edu<mailto:j.weinheimer@aur.edu> Director of Library and Information Services The American University of Rome via Pietro Roselli, 4 00153 Rome, Italy voice- 011 39 06 58330919 ext. 258 fax-011 39 06 58330992 First Thus: http://catalogingmatters.blogspot.com/ Cooperative Cataloging Rules: http://sites.google.com/site/opencatalogingrules/

branchcodes and case sensitivity
by Chris Hobbs 24 Sep '10

24 Sep '10

Hi All, We're running into a problem on 3.00.05 with the case of our branchcodes. We have configured our branches with codes like 'LO' or 'ES'. We imported all of our items against those codes, and everything looked good. School just stated, and we just began circulating, and have discovered that when items are checked in, items.holdingbranch is being populated with lowercase variants of those branchcodes ('lo' or 'es'). This causes the interface in many places to claim there's no current branch, even preventing check-out of that item. The obvious fix would be to simply set branchcode to LOWER(branchcode) in the back end, but the foreign key constraint prevents me from doing so through mysql. I'm fixing this temporarily by running UPDATEs against items setting holdingbranch=UPPER(holdingbranch), but this is a kludge. Any suggestions? -- Chris Hobbs Director, Technology New Haven Unified School District -- This message was scanned by ESVA and is believed to be clean.

MARC21slim2OPACDetail.xsl and brancode variable
by Zachary Spalding 23 Sep '10

23 Sep '10

Is there any way to access the branchcode variable while in the MARC21slim2OPACDetail.xsl file? I would like to add the branch code as a search limit to subject field so when a patron click on a subject in the detail view they will only get hits from the branch they our accessing. -- Zachary Spalding Systems Manager Southeastern NY Library Resources Council 21 S.
