zebraqueue and cron jobs
by Paul A. 04 Nov '10

04 Nov '10

Appendix 12.2 to the new Koha 3.2 manual suggests running rebuild_zebra.pl as a Cron job every n minutes. However, the zebraqueue_daemon appears to automatically update the biblio database as and when needed. Could someone kindly explain the necessity of the Cron job? We are having a few problems finding sufficient "system level" documentation. Need help for implementing discovery tool (VuFind) with KOHA
by hasina＠bracu.ac.bd 04 Nov '10

04 Nov '10

Dear all Currently we are implementing Vufind at BRAC University Library, Bangladesh. We are using KOHA version 3.2 latest stable release. There is a built-in driver for KOHA but its not working. It was written as a test of concept very early in VuFinds development during experimentation with using Kohas Zebra index instead of VuFinds Solr index. We are dumping MARC record from Koha and uploading it to VuFind. It is working fine, but it doesn't show the holding data. We are trying to build a driver of KOHA for VuFind. Is there anyone who is working on any discovery tool and KOHA? Hasina Afroz Senior Deputy Librarian (Head of Library) BRAC University Bangladesh http://library.bracu.ac.bd/

Which table contains the holding information?
by Altaf Mahmud 04 Nov '10

04 Nov '10

Dear all, I am using Koha 3.2. I want to know which table in Koha database contains the holding status (available/unavailable)? I just have taken a look, but couldn't point out the table I am looking for. Is it specifically mentioned in any table? Or do I've to query multiple tables and calculate the number of items that are available? How Koha displays that information? Please give me a clue. Thank you. -- Altaf Mahmud System Programmer Ayesha Abed Library BRAC University Bangladesh.

Citizen iDP 3500 receipt printer
by Brendan A. Gallagher 04 Nov '10

Hello All - We have recently found that Citizen iDP 3500 receipt printers are not printing from Firefox 3.6 (we've had three different cases). I've contacted the company and they said they know of the problem and that's all they said. I've asked if they plan on fixing that problem and I have not gotten a message back. So if you have a Citizen iDP 3500 printer that is working with FireFox please let me know how you got it to work - or if you have not upgraded your version of FireFox and you're printing fine (then I would recommend keeping you firefox upgrades back). I will keep everyone updated if the company responds with anything useful. Thanks and Cheers, Brendan Gallagher ByWater Solutions

Fwd: Citizen iDP 3500 receipt printer

The Citizen Rep and myself actually ran through a whole gamut of stuff, the representative even took remote control of my computer. The printer simply will not print from Firefox (new drivers, or not, and different DIP switch settings). I have tried a number of other drivers and settings as well. We have even tried printing from Internet explorer with the printers. While you are unable to print slips from internet explorer (because the slip button doesn't work at least it didn't work from the demo server or sandbox server) you are able to print from the main circulation screen so in theory it should act as a quasi check out slip. The problem with that, is the print out is probably not something you want to give to anybody (it looks pretty bad imho). We also tried printing to a text file (garbage), and to a pdf file which of course did not work either. > > So we came up with a couple of other suggestions between myself and Steven Silveria: > > 1. (we haven't tried this solution yet), have it email a dummy account, print out from outlook - this in theory should work because outlook is a Microsoft product which the printers seem to like. > > That's all I can think of for now. Staff training with a live catalogue
by Elaine Bradtke 03 Nov '10

03 Nov '10

Has anyone trained their staff to use Koha after they've gone live? Here's our situation. We will be launching Koha with a discrete collection of non-circulating material. There are political / funding reasons for getting this up as soon as possible. At the moment, the rest of the staff has no MARC experience, though they're very good cataloguers in our old system. Switching to MARC will be a big change for them, and will take some time, and training. We'll need to have some sort of system in place where I can review their work, preferably before it goes public. The plan is that by the time we import the data for the circulating collection and the patron information the staff will be fully trained. But there will be a time period when they're still getting up to speed with MARC (we're all part time). In effect we will be running two systems at once. The old system in house, and the new system (with only one collection to start) on the web. Questions: 1) Is there a way to hold back (from the OPAC) newly created MARC records until they are checked, or a way to flag newly created records to enable checking if they can't be held pending review? 2) Or, should I consider: a) a second instance of Koha for training purposes, from which I could download records and then upload them into our live catalogue, or b) a branch that is not viewable in the OPAC (is that possible?) from which I could transfer items to the live catalogue? I am very much aware how much change and upheaval switching to Koha means for our staff and I would like to make the transition as seamless as possible. If you are following that upgrade route, you should upgrade to 3.0 and then follow upgrade instructions from 3.0 to 3.2. Alternatively, you may like to export all your records and borrowers and import them into 3.2 as if Koha 2.2 was some foreign system. It may give a cleaner Koha 3.2, but may also lose some history. Copy cataloguing will help with the books. But we have a lot of very obscure material come through our doors, not to mention unique sound recordings and moving images made in the field. MARC doesn't worry me too much, but you should have seen the look on the Director's face when he first saw the cataloguing interface. It's daunting for the uninitiated. I sent him off to a MARC training course, he's more confident now. We'll definitely start training with copy cataloguing to ease them into it. I haven't looked into reports, but that sounds like a good way to keep tabs on things. A response on the koha list is welcome too :) ________________________________ From: koha-devel-bounces(a)lists.koha-community.org [mailto:koha-devel-bounces@lists.koha-community.org] Sent: maandag 1 november 2010 14:56 To: koha-devel(a)lists.koha-community.org Subject: [Koha-devel] Adding items in Acquisition 3.2 Hi, The new feature (in Koha 3.2) of adding items in Acquisitions with the framework display is quite promising. It appears however that the framework plugins cannot be activated there. Do I overlook something? Or is anyone still working on this functionality? Regards, Marcel
