problems with Zebra on Ubuntu 12.04
by Howell, Lynda 01 Jun '12

I have Koha 3.8.1 installed and mostly working on Ubuntu 12.04, and have created/imported a bunch of records to work with. The problem I'm having is that all searches in the catalog come up with no results. I can see the records I imported in the reservoir, so I know they're there, but Search the Catalog finds nothing. There are several related FAQs at http://koha-community.org/documentation/faq/, but I've tried all of the suggestions without any luck. Here's the command I'm currently using to rebuild the index: sudo -u koha -H env KOHA_CONF=/etc/koha/koha-conf.xml PERL5LIB=/usr/share/koha/lib /usr/share/koha/bin/migration_tools/rebuild_zebra.pl -b -r -v The first time I run that, I get a bunch of "[No such file or directory]" error messages about /var/lock/koha/zebradb/biblios -- I've checked, and there really is no /var/lock/koha directory. If I create those directories (and confirm that the koha user is the owner), I stop seeing error messages. But I still can't search for records. And I have to keep recreating this /var/lock/koha directory and subdirectories -- I think they're being deleted when I restart the computer. I haven't found anywhere that describes what the expected output of rebuild_zebra.pl is. I've been assuming that no news is good news, but maybe it's not. For example, I see it count out dots for all of my records under "exporting biblio", but then it says REINDEXING zebra ================== ================== CLEANING ================== Without another list of dots (although it pauses between the two lines of ===s for several seconds as if it's doing something). Is that what it's supposed to do? I installed Koha following the instructions at http://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/Koha_on_Ubuntu. They were written for Koha 3.06 and Ubuntu 11.10, but everything seemed to work as written with only one exception. In Step 1 under Install Koha, the second command "make" -- gave me /usr/bin/perl "-Iblib/arch" "-Iblib/lib" fix-perl-path.PL blib Permission denied at fix-perl-path.PL line 88. make: *** [blib] Error 13 I changed it to "sudo make", and it worked. And again with the next command -- "make test" didn't work but "sudo make test" did. I wouldn't expect that to cause problems like this. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for your help. Lynda Howell.

Can anyone help a new Koha user?
by Arslan Farooq 31 May '12

Hi Stewart If the only reason you are trying to install Koha on Windows is that you don't know how to install and use Linux then I think we need to find some way we can help you set up a Linux box and help you set up Koha on it. Once Koha is up and running on a Linux (preferably Debian) PC, then more people will be able to help you with issues and questions you may have later on. Now about helping you to set up Debian Linux first, then Koha: How about you spend you time and effort on learning how to install Debian on a PC. I assure you it will be worth the effort. You can find help online how to do that. And, I'm thinking, perhaps I can help you set up Debian on a PC on a Sunday using chat (#koha, Yahoo etc), or Skype. Have not thought much about it yet. Just an idea. But seems possible. We can talk about it. Once Debian is set-up, then installing Koha using Debia koha-common package is very easy. You decide. Be brave. Don't be afraid of Linux. arslan Hi everyone, > I'm an English teacher at a high school in Changzhou, Jiangsu, China. I'm > not a librarian, and have never used catalog software before. Re: [Koha] Barcodes with leading zeros and spaces

Hi, Lori, We had a similar barcode problem. Our library has two different barcode patterns, and we needed a way to canonicalize them for Koha. Our solution was to buy a new optical scanner that was programmable. For under US$200 we purchased a Symbol LS2208 barcode scanner. It supports a programming capability called Advanced Data Formatting. You can program the scanner to recognize certain character strings, for example "p 000" and either scan or skip following characters. There is almost no limit to what you can program the thing to handle. Now Koha never "sees" the barcode variants. The new scanner is also more sensitive and accurate than our old one. I also have created a new account, just today. I have tried two separate mail addresses, but neither of those (private mail servers that I manage) have received mail. Someone needs to look at the wiki, I think and make sure its mail settings are correct. It seems unreasonable for all these new members to be struggling. Barcodes with leading zeros and spaces
by Lori Bowen Ayre 30 May '12

Does anyone have any barcodes that use leading zeros and upper and lower case letters? I am working with a library who has barcodes that look like "p 000123" which they need to have interpreted as "P123". Any thoughts about how Koha would handle that? Hello MJ, > can Piwik be used in opt-in mode? That is, no tracking unless the user consents. It seems the next version of Piwik, due out in the next few days, will feature a cookie-free option to satisfy the UK's new "cookie law." Piwik does offer an option, in its privacy settings, to anonymize visitors' IP addresses ("to comply with your local privacy laws/guidelines," it says), as well as the opt-out link already mentioned. But that may not meet your specific needs. I suppose it depends on the interpretation… I've read two interpretations of the law just now: 1. Providing a prominent disclaimer mentioning that you're using analytics and cookies, along with an opt-out link, is enough: http://www.dailytech.com/UK+Law+Demanding+Tracking+Cookies+and+Analytics+No… 2. Opt-out is not good enough: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/UK-Cookie-Law-Cookies-Storing-Law-Permissi… Good luck! -Peter

Problems with the Koha wiki - registration and editing for new users
by David Nind 30 May '12

Hi Massoud. I'm having a similar problem editing the wiki as well. I've registered, but have yet to receive a confirmation email (which is required before you can edit a page). There also seems to be a lot of 'spammy' new user account registrations on the "Recent changes' page as well. Is this something we should log a bug report for? Regards. ldap/ Koha
by Samuel desseaux 30 May '12

Hello, It's the first time i configure a connection between koha and a ldap. I don't succeed (only one try would have been fantastic). This is an extract of my file <auth_by_bind>1</auth_by_bind>  <principal_name>uid=%s,ou=people,dc=ecp,dc=fr</principal_name>  <mapping>  <firstname is='givenName'></firstname> <surname is='sn'> </surname> <address is=''>Ecole Centrale Paris</address> <city is=''>Chatenay-Malabry</city> <zipcode is=''>92290</zipcode> <branchcode is=''>ECAM</branchcode> <userid is='uid'></userid> <password is='userPassword'></password> <cardnumber is='ecpbadgeNumber'></cardnumber> <email is='mail'></email> <categorycode is='supannEtuDiplome'>employee</categorycode> <phone is='telephoneNumber'></phone> I don't find where is the problem. Mapping between koha and ldap seems to be good. But, in logs, i see this problem [Wed May 30 14:58:07 2012] [error] [client 138.195.48.69] [Wed May 30 14:58:07 2012] opac-user.pl: DBD::mysql::st fetchrow failed: fetch() without execute() at /usr/share/koha/lib/C4/Auth.pm line 1463, <DATA> line 558., referer: http://koha.ecp.fr/cgi-bin/koha/opac-user.pl An idea? Best regards samuel
