Solr and enhanced searching (WAS: Re: Koha Digest, Vol 80, Issue 40)
by Stacy Pober 26 Jun '12

26 Jun '12

Jared, Thank you for the explanation. When I looked at the link you provided: http://bugs.koha-community.org/bugzilla3/show_bug.cgi?id=8233 I was surprised to see the heading: "*Bug 8233* <http://bugs.koha-community.org/bugzilla3/show_bug.cgi?id=8233>-New search engine layer - introduce solr without breaking anything else" Isn't the "without breaking anything else" something that is assumed in the software development process? There have been times I've wanted to add "without breaking anything else" or something similar to every enhancement and bug fix request going to our vendor, but I hoped it was something implied in any enhancement request. The enhancement that gave our version of Koha phrase searching does indeed break another very important feature when it's activated. Perhaps this level of explicitness is the model we need to follow. This makes me think of an old comedy routine where a man asks a faith healer to cure his twisted hand. The preacher says, "Lord, make this one hand like the other" and the guy gets two twisted hands. Re: [Koha] No errors, but no search results

I have exactly them same problem. I did install sudo cpan, no error, test all ok. I make file ok, install zebra with no error... I created some records with Marc frameworks. I can check out, check in, and check mysql that i did have some items (books) in library. The only problem is that i can't search. When i type some things on "search the catalog", the result always is not found. So did i have problem with zebra index? I tried reinstall it, nothing happened. Help me please! Kindest Regards! I know, because then I am contacted by librarians who say they can't find books which they have just entered (or I check myself, I run a few mysql queries and check if I can find them on the website). How is it that no one has added this kind of searching to the community version of Koha? It's a major omission. People are so used to using quote marks and those operators in search strings that they often try to use them in Koha even though they don't work as expected. One of the features in an "easy to use" OPAC is that the searching conforms to expected norms that the public knows from other common search interfaces. This feature was commissioned from the vendor our library uses, PTFS, but it doesn't work properly. (It kind of works, but if you turn this feature on, the boolean searching in Advanced Search stops working correctly. As a result, many of the libraries that have it as an option don't use it.) I'm astonished that no one in the world has added properly working code that would make the most widely understood phrase searching method (quotation marks) available in community Koha. As for the + and - operators, if anyone tries adding that, they have to code it as a two-character string (space+ or space-) to prevent confusion when users are looking for hyphenated words. Is anyone in the Koha-verse working on adding a search mode that uses quotation marks and + - operators? I mean, aside from the buggy version we have in Liblime's LAK. -- Stacy Pober Information Alchemist [speaking for myself, not representing any institution or group] Riverdale, NY 10471 stacy.pober(a)manhattan.edu On Mon, Jun 25, 2012 at 9:18 AM, <koha-request(a)lists.katipo.co.nz> wrote: From: Robin Sheat <robin(a)catalyst.net.nz> To: koha(a)lists.katipo.co.nz Subject: Re: [Koha] Spell-check/ Did you mean Message-ID: <4FE8322C.5050207(a)catalyst.net.nz> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Op 22-06-12 21:29, Paul schreef: > Searching for "nature defecit" *with* the double quotes fails -- this I > expect, as the quotes eliminate fuzziness. > > Searching for nature defecit (no quotes) works perfectly. > > Searching for "nature-deficit" (with quotes) fails; I am only > semi-surprised as the logic of the - (minus sign) is to search for the > phrase without the term after the minus. No errors, but no search results
by ShaneGreen 26 Jun '12

Hello, We have installed and are hosting Koha for a new local library. Everything seems to be running fine with the exception of Zebra. With the help of the forums we have eliminated all the zebra error messages, but we still do not get any results when searching. http://koha.1045719.n5.nabble.com/default-idx-no-such-file-td5716932.html This community is below the poverty level and so we have donated our servers and time. Any debugging we hire will have to come out of our own pockets, but we are at a standstill and so something has to be done. If you've got suggestions we'd love to hear them. Or if you're great at debugging, tell us what you'll charge to get it working. A couple of points (using 3.6.1 in production, and an experimental 3.8.??? in my sand box) and after cataloguing your Richard Louv title, and using both staff and OPAC: Searching for "nature defecit" *with* the double quotes fails -- this I expect, as the quotes eliminate fuzziness. Searching for nature defecit (no quotes) works perfectly. Searching for "nature-deficit" (with quotes) fails; I am only semi-surprised as the logic of the - (minus sign) is to search for the phrase without the term after the minus. However +nature -deficit also finds that title alone and in my opinion should not (but my opinion is not definitive.) I also tested with a phrase a little more common to our catalogue: British Navy British Navy ==> 1636 results "British Navy" ==> no results (this I must look into, I am very surprised as it actually exists in the catalogue written with the quote marks on several occasions.) Britsh Navy and British Nevy both ==> 1634 results (have not yet found which two (if the same two?) are missing. But ... Britsh Nevy (double typo) finds 1637 ... weird. Best - Paul

Would reinstalling everything help? Wouldn't it take two weeks to set up and fix everything? > If you have any idea about what's going on... > Your technician is sort of right. Koha itself will not work if it can not connect to the database. Zebra itself never ever connects to the database. This is where the confusion is occuring I think we are talking past each other. There is a script, that is written in perl, that connects to the Koha database, exports a bunch of MARC as xml files, then passes those off to the zebraidx job for it to index them. None of this requires zebrasrv to be running (the actual zebras server process). zebrasrv itself never talks to Koha, or to mysql, it only looks at it's own index files. Now, the script to rebuild the indexes will fail if it can not connect to the database. This looks like what was happening with the error log you pasted before. So to be absolutely clear, it is the zebrasrv process that is dying? And it is not logging anywhere? Not even to syslog? You are running from the debian packages right? If zebrasrv is dying I would expect to see things like this $ sudo tail /var/log/koha/ashs/zebra-error.log.1 20120314 21:58:00 ashs-koha-zebra: client (pid 2441) exited with 1 status $ sudo tail /var/log/koha/ashs/zebra-output.log.1 21:58:00-14/03 [fatal] Element <xslt stylesheet="/usr/share/koha/intranet/htdocs/intranet-tmpl/prog/en/xslt/MARC21slim2DC.xsl"/>: could not locate stylesheet '/usr/share/koha/intranet/htdocs/intranet-tmpl/prog/en/xslt/MARC21slim2DC.xsl' in config /etc/koha/sites/ashs/koha-conf.xml Chris -- Chris Cormack Catalyst IT Ltd. +64 4 803 2238 PO Box 11-053, Manners St, Wellington 6142, New Zealand

Mysqldump and Ubuntu
by clint.deckard 24 Jun '12

24 Jun '12

Kia ora, I have spent a good deal of time getting mysqldump to work for me, partly because I am not an expert. Finally, I found out that Ubuntu (I installed this instance from KohaLiveCD) requires the format mysqldump --user=myuser --password=mypassword koha>mysql_backup.sql this differs from the example in the wiki mysqldump -u myuser -p mypassword koha > mydatadump.sql I thought I'd add this knowledge to the wiki but then thought perhaps I should check on this list first in case I make a fool of myself (again). Comments anyone? Clint. -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.
