Newbie: MARC Framework editing question
by Johannes Graumann 16 Oct '12

16 Oct '12

Hi, Please bear with my ignorance ... I have created a noe MARC framework (BOOKS) and also an authorized value "Languages". The framework is derived from the Default framework and accordingly has a field "041 - LANGUAGE CODE". I proceeded to have that mandatory and linked it to the created authorized value. My question now is: how does this actually work when importing something via z39.50 from let's say the LOC ... it's possible that MARC field definitions from souces conflict with my local setup. How are conflicts handled? Is it safer to generate a new (local) field rather than editing like done above? Thanks for any hints. Sincerely, Joh

Next Global Bug Sqashing Day (GBSD) - 2012-09-14
by Fischer, Katrin 16 Oct '12

16 Oct '12

Dear community, as Paul pointed out in his monthly RM newsletter, the freeze dates for the upcoming version 3.10 are getting closer and closer (http://koha-community.org/koha-release-manager-newsletter-10-2012-08/) - and there are still lots of patches, features and bug fixes waiting to be tested, that could be part of this next release. So it’s about time we have another GBSD! > Friday, 14th September 2012 More information about GBSD and useful links can be found on the wiki: http://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/2012-09-14_Global_bug_squashing_day And there is also our super cool dashboard to have a look at: http://dashboard.koha-community.org/ Best regards, Katrin

Wow, thank you for the quick replies everyone! I should have asked this list long ago. Sue said: > We undertook a stocktake earlier this year using Koha 3.4. We didn't use > the stocktake module though. What we did was return all items through the > circulation desk. If only we had a barcode scanner. =) We are very low-tech here. So I am just hoping to get a list to print where I can check off items. > Below is the report I use, which could also be used as a shelf check list. > If you only have one branch then take out the highlighted line. Not sure > that it would work in your version but worth a try :) > Thank you! I will try something like your solution. Chris said: I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there is no reports module in > 2.2.9 (not in the way there is in 3.2.0 onwards anyway). Oh thank goodness you knew this. It was driving me crazy. Well, we clearly needed to upgrade anyhow. Thanks for the links to backing up and upgrading. We pretty much have not used the system at all and don't really need the history, so I will probably just install the newest version, as Bob suggested. > Now for some more bad news, upgrading from 2.2.9 (which is I think 6 > years old now and about 27 versions behind) is not super easy. Haha, yeah, I think my predecessors did not think to check on upgrades. But I had no idea we were that far behind! Mark: > My gut first question is: Is this a windows installed version? The number > makes me think of a windows version. > Hm, it is on a Mac and was migrated from another Mac where presumably it was installed. In the About module where I found the number it actually said something about Linux. Maybe the Linux/Mac versions of super-old KOHA were the same? -- Natalie Weber MA student Department of Linguistics University of British Columbia

how to leave quickly circulation message on specific items ?
by Mathieu Saby 16 Oct '12

16 Oct '12

Hi My colleagues often need to leave messages that must be seen at check-in. If the message concerns a patron, they can use Koha circulation message. (for example : "umbrella lost at the library...") But if the message concerns a specific item I think there is no easy way to do that. (for example : "at check-in of THIS book, give it to head librarian / change the barcode / change the call number...") At check in, the item public note is visible (in red), but we don't want these messages to be seen on the opac... We can not use item non-public note for this purpose, because : - it is not visible at check-in - it could not be filled in easily and quickly at check-out. We could maybe use the "materials" item fields (mapped with items.materials), but I don't like that because if we do so, we could not use it for its normal purpose anymore (for example "One leaflet with this CD") So most of my colleagues are using the patron circulation message with this kind of message : "When the book with barcode ...... and title ..... is check-in, change the barcode" But the message appears for each check-in... Maybe there is a function I did not see ? If not, don't you think it would be a pretty improvement to koha ? Best regards M. What details? Koha will support Unicode input out of the box, so just start making your entries. To search successfully in Devanagari you will have to use Zebra. You can apply http://git.biblibre.com/cgi-bin/gitweb.cgi?p=koha;a=commitdiff_plain;h=b406… this patch to make necessary changes to you Zebra Configuration.. Or if you are not comfortable applying patches etc you can follow following procedure.. #sudo apt-get install libicu-dev libicu38 yaz-icu Copy following files from /usr/share/idzebra-2.0/tab/ to /etc/koha/zebradb/etc/ icu.idx phrases-icu.xml string.chr words-icu.xml Copy /etc/koha/zebradb/etc/words-icu.xml to /etc/koha/zebradb/etc/icu.xml Edit /etc/koha/zebradb/etc/icu.xml change <icu_chain locale="en"> to <icu_chain locale="en_IN.UTF-8"> Save and change ownership of all copied files to koha:koha #sudo chown -R koha:koha /etc/koha/zebradb/etc Edit /etc/koha/zebradb/zebra-biblios.cfg add line index: icu.idx Restart zebra server and queue daemons #sudo /etc/init.d/koha-zebra-daemon restart #sudo /etc/init.d/koha-zebraqueue-daemon restart Rebuild zebra index #sudo KOHA_CONF=/etc/koha/koha-conf.xml PERL5LIB=/usr/share/koha/lib /usr/share/koha/bin/migration_tools/rebuild_zebra.pl -b -r -v Try your searches.. Introduction / Inventory questions
by Natalie Weber 15 Oct '12

15 Oct '12

Hi all, I am working in a departmental library and have inherited a KOHA database. I have been spending some time getting used to the system. The previous students with my job description have catalogued most of our books here. Now I'd like to generate an inventory list to print so that I can check off books which are here and see which books have walked off the shelves. The problem is that when I go to the inventory/stocktaking option and try to generate a report, it's blank. An extra button pops up that lets me page through page after page of fantastically blank inventory. Actually, I haven't figured out how to generate any kind of report at all. Any and all combinations of options I try don't work. Has anyone else run into this problem? We are on KOHA version 2.2.9, and I have been avoiding updating while I get used to the system and finish cataloguing the books. If the answer to my question is "that bug was fixed / feature was implemented five versions ago; update!" then can someone kindly point me to documentation on how to back up the database before I do that? ^^;; Thanks for your help, --Natalie -- Natalie Weber MA student Department of Linguistics University of British Columbia

Hello Sunil, --- On Mon, 10/15/12, Sunil Kumar <sunil.kumar(a)ecoleglobal.com> wrote: > > What I am doing is using Microsoft Excel to Convert the > database into MARC21 > and then converting them to MRC format. > > But when I have multiple copies, I am keeping the biblio > records also; how > can I remove the biblio and keep the 952 records especially > in MS Office > Excel. > I dont know how your excel file looks but let me quickly share the method i adopt for doing similar migration 1. After you have your excel (or libreoffice / openoffice) file with the data you want to migrate, seperate all multiple copies into another sheet. In other words have a spreadsheet that has no multiple copies. 2nd, 3rd etc copies goes into another spreadsheet with a similar structure as the original 2. Export out comma or tab delimited, then use MARCEdit to covert this into a valid marc file. 3. Export the sheet containing multiple copies also as comma or tab delimited, use Marcedit to generate a second marc file, this one now contains the muliple copies 4. Import the first file into Koha. 5. After the import of the first file and INDEXING, import the 2nd file, creating an appropriate match criteria to make sure that only the items information would now be imported sisce it should find matching BIBS. I hope a made a little sense to you. Let me know if you need more explanation. Olugbenga Adara

But the good news is that there's a reliable and straightforward workaround. Once they are in Koha, find all the barcodes of the items; select one biblio and "attach" all the items by barcode; finally delete the "empty" biblios. >especially in MS Office Excel. We couldn't -- and we spent an inordinate amount of time trying with "Office 97" (the last M$ product we ever bought a license for.) I did write a macro for OpenOffice v2, but it was in fact more time-consuming than the method above. It basically added many more, multiple columns for additional 952 fields, but beyond 128 columns things started to go wrong on a 32-bit box. This *might* be resolved with the latest AMD64 version of LibreOffice. If you have a fairly recent version of Windows[1], try MarcEdit and join the mailing list at MARCEDIT-L(a)metis3.gmu.edu. The Professor who develops the software (Terry Reece) is quite brilliant and extremely helpful. HTH - Paul [1] we did try a few years ago to install MarcEdit with Wine on a Ubuntu 10.04 box; maybe it worked, but it was so slow that we got nowhere with it. --- Maritime heritage and history, preservation and conservation, research and education through the written word and the arts. <http://NavalMarineArchive.com> and <http://UltraMarine.ca>

I can't *imagine* using Excel for that; MarcEdit or some other tool would probably be much more useful.
