Introduction / Inventory questions

Hi all, I am working in a departmental library and have inherited a KOHA database. I have been spending some time getting used to the system. The previous students with my job description have catalogued most of our books here. Now I'd like to generate an inventory list to print so that I can check off books which are here and see which books have walked off the shelves. The problem is that when I go to the inventory/stocktaking option and try to generate a report, it's blank. An extra button pops up that lets me page through page after page of fantastically blank inventory. Actually, I haven't figured out how to generate any kind of report at all. Any and all combinations of options I try don't work. Has anyone else run into this problem? We are on KOHA version 2.2.9, and I have been avoiding updating while I get used to the system and finish cataloguing the books. If the answer to my question is "that bug was fixed / feature was implemented five versions ago; update!" then can someone kindly point me to documentation on how to back up the database before I do that? ^^;; Thanks for your help, --Natalie -- Natalie Weber MA student Department of Linguistics University of British Columbia

After you have your excel (or libreoffice / openoffice) file with the data you want to migrate, seperate all multiple copies into another sheet. In other words have a spreadsheet that has no multiple copies. 2nd, 3rd etc copies goes into another spreadsheet with a similar structure as the original 2. Export out comma or tab delimited, then use MARCEdit to covert this into a valid marc file. 3. Export the sheet containing multiple copies also as comma or tab delimited, use Marcedit to generate a second marc file, this one now contains the muliple copies 4. Import the first file into Koha. 5. After the import of the first file and INDEXING, import the 2nd file, creating an appropriate match criteria to make sure that only the items information would now be imported sisce it should find matching BIBS. I can't *imagine* using Excel for that; MarcEdit or some other tool would probably be much more useful. The standard practice what I have done is to keep the biblio number same and then changing the local field details in 952 and making sure that barcode and copy number changed. Dear Folks, I have created a recorded and entered items details such as call number, barcode and other information. My problem is that holding details in cataloguing is not shown also in OPAC. I do not know if this question was resolved earlier. I also want to find those records with no items, is there a SQL command to find and edit them.
