Very good, logical advice; however, very respectfully, there is perhaps a different perspective. Editing a template is quick, simple and easily reversible; writing javascript might be more daunting, and writing a .po, etc., is more time consuming. Keeping notes is paramount, e.g. $ sudo vi /usr/share/koha/opac/htdocs/opac-tmpl/prog/en/lib/jquery/plugins/ui.tabs.css edit line 68 to transparent background It is the "upgrade" situation that poses the problems. When I upgraded from 3.6 to 3.8, I had a list of 11 "customizations" to carry out (now 23 and growing) -- ranging from simple replacement of images to more obscure Perl mods, but the prior preparation of notes made things relatively easy. The question is: how often do Koha users upgrade their *production* instance of Koha? It probably comes down to budgets, available time of IT staff, and policy. Does policy encourage "adding bells and whistles" or tend to stick to "if it ain't broken, don't fix it." [Security upgrades are definitely a thing to be looked into, despite it being quite time consuming to go through each set of release notes looking for show stoppers.] It would be interesting and informative if other participants in this list could briefly describe their "production upgrade policy." KOHA Migration of Public Libraries in Turkey Project
by Mustafa Arıcı 21 Jan '13

21 Jan '13

Hi dear KOHA community, We would like to say a few words about the great KOHA migration project that is going on in Turkey lately. This project initiated by "Republic of Turkey Ministry of Culture and Tourism" and "Near East University". The project itself aims to migrate all the Public Libraries that are operating under authority of Ministry of Culture and Tourism. And this makes up to total 1112 branches, with more than 800.000 users total and approx. 8.000.000 bibliographic records currently. Also it's anticipated that this movement will bring great attraction from other libraries located around the country and also from some other organisations as well. As Near East University, Innovation and IT Center we are dealing with the technical aspects of the project. Also I would like to point out that Near East University Grand Library has been actively using a modified version of KOHA since 2005 and made some software contributions to KOHA project from time to time. We are happy to announce this to the community. Regards. -- Mustafa Arici Software Developer Innovation and IT Center - Near East University ### PGP-Key ID: BCACEBEB @ pgp.mit.edu ###

Please send me by the >20th anything you think your fellow community members might like to know about. Based on our news release, 11 January 2013 <http://navalmarinearchive.com/news/opac_jan2013.html>: Our Library "Online Public Access Catalogue" or OPAC ---------------------------------------------------- We are pleased to announce that our library catalogue is now online at <http://opac.navalmarinearchive.com>. It currently contains over 20,000 books - all that remains to be done is to catalogue the remaining 15,000 books, 250,000 magazines and journals, 2,000 charts, several hundred paintings and engravings, and all the other documents, files and manuscripts at "The Victory." Importantly, we are now formally accepted as an international library (CaOPIACS) and have access to major libraries for automatic retrieval [Z39.50] of their bibliographic records. Reciprocal use of our records by other libraries is planned in the near future. This online library project has been achieved by an investment of about 1,400 hours of volunteer time into designing and implementing the system (including limited import of some of our spreadsheets), and continues with between 20 and 40 volunteer hours per week in cataloguing. In-house testing continues to make progress on the very complex matters surrounding efficient cataloguing of our periodicals; we tentatively plan on putting these fully on-line by mid-2013, but in the meanwhile all work stations in the library have access to this work-in-progress. Technically, it involves a new 64-bit web server on our premises with enhanced internet connectivity, running a Linux operating system. This has allowed us to develop a customized version of the Koha open-source library system. A general query about UI customization
by Indranil Das Gupta 20 Jan '13

Hi, No real problem, rather just want people's opinion on this. For OPAC or Staff Client text string UI artifacts - e.g, labels, what do you prefer to do? a) hand edit the template file or b) use a bit of jquery in either intranetuserjs / opacuserjs for on-the-fly replacement My personal preference is to use approach "b" thanks in advance -indra -- Indranil Das Gupta Phone : +91-98300-20971 Blog : http://indradg.randomink.org/blog IRC : indradg on irc://irc.freenode.net Twitter : indradg -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Please exchange editable Office documents only in ODF Format. Import matching rule for 001 tag
by Cab Vinton 19 Jan '13

19 Jan '13

I'm having trouble getting this to work with the following settings: Search index: Control-number Score: 101 Tag: 001 Subfields: [blank] Offset: 0 Length: 0 [blank does not work either] Normalization rule: Control-number I found an old post from Galen suggesting that that the Length parameter be changed, but since OCLC numbers come in varying lengths (7,8,9 digits?), I'm not sure how this would work. Any thoughts? (And yes, I'm aware that the 001 tag is not fool-proof. In this case, however, it suits our purposes well.) Many thanks!
